Imagine, Baku oil, which covers all expenses at least of Southern Caucasus, and it's the poorest city(country) of Southern Caucasus. People had to go to Georgia or Armenia to buy normal things. Attitude against us always was biased, it wasn't communism that made us such people. Throughout history, Azerbaijan had been a house for a lot of different religious groups, and we are really lucky about this :)

My wife's sister had a pretty good stint in Azerbaijan with the OSCE a half decade ago, she met many nice and hardworking people. It's certainly good when people today can put aside old history and old blood feuds, "no peace, no justice" I always say. I am an American with a wide spread to my roots and I am thankful every day that our Indians, Native Americans are not the kind of people who hijack planes, lay down IED's, behead non-believers, burn down cities in riots or snipe people for kicks to avenge historic wrongs of our more primitive days.

There are around 200k ethnic Russians living in Azerbaijan today as full citizens of the republic. This is not counting the immeasurable number of intermixed families of Slavic-Azeri descent, myself included. We have several fully functional Russian Orthodox Churches here.
