Phil Cooke, author of the newly released book "Church on Trial: How to Protect Your Congregation, Mission, and Reputation During a Crisis," sat down with CBN's Tré Goins-Phillips to talk about Gateway Church, the downfall of former Pastor Robert Morris, and how churches and ministries should protect themselves from sexual sin and, if it does occur, handle it in a transparent and Gospel-focused way.

I really appreciate this video. Phil calls out the need for churches to implement the same policies and protocols that strong businesses have put into place that protect the innocent and help maintain the integrity of leaders due to a system of transparency. That is what’s lacking in many of today’s churches- transparency. I watched another interview (if I can find it I’ll come back and link it here) that discussed HOW pastors that are spiritually broken set up systems that lack any and all accountably to protect themselves. Sadly, I guess this is how Gateway leaders didn’t know (or kept quiet about this) for so long. Our churches need to put systems into place that provide strong accountability of their pastors and other leaders - for their innocent congregants, financial transparency, etc.

@@bluebonnet00 I feel Robert had to start his own church because if he were to be hired by a transparent church they would do a background check. In other words, he would not qualify. He never has qualified by his own admissions of "multiple, multiple affairs". He has so many followers because they love his "relatability". They are willing to overlook what the Bible actually teaches, to feel good about themselves. Robert's church. Robert's rules!

How can a pastor once he states he has been in a inappropriate relationship while married. Then goes through counciling to be restored.Would who ever is involved in the restoration counciling of that pastor not have to ask specific details about the (young woman) involved? Like who is she?how old is she? is she married?etc. Someone surely must have asked some of these questions in the beginning of when the pastor confessed his inappropriate relationship?

Rev. Graham: Only one sin that can't be forgiven is on God's list - and that is the sin of rejecting Him and refusing His offer of forgiveness and new life in Jesus Christ. This alone is the unforgivable sin, because it means we are saying that the Holy Spirit's witness about Jesus is a lie (see Luke 12:10).

@@breezybird403 I am 61 years old. Have been playing guitar and mandolin since I was 13. Master Electrician by trade, but I also played classic rock in clubs for years. Started serving God in 2008. Fell in love with gospel bluegrass music. And I like the traditional gospelsongs much more than I do the modern every song is 1, minor 6,4,5, chord progression. I agree they all sound the same. The songwriting is terrible. There are a few exceptions though. And there are some really good songs. But all songs in every genre is stuck on that 1, 6 minor, 4,5, chord progression because of the emotion in it. All the Nashville studio cats are complaining of it too. What happen to beautiful chord arrangements? The traditional gospel songs have some wonderful chords. One of my favorites is "It is well with my soul". My band "Healed by the Blood" write and play classic rock style gospel music as well as do traditional songs. We mainly play fundraisers for Christ based rehab and special church events. I am also a music director on Emmaus walks where we lead music on over 100 songs in 3 days. (Acoustic only). Mix of old and new. Also play at Methodist church once a month doing mainly contemporary Christian music. Also acoustic only. I don't get paid for any of this. In fact it costs me a heck of a lot of money to do God's work. And Emmaus weekend costs $300 plus 1 day missed wages. All this being said, I have seen the spirit move and people being uplifted and emotional healed whether I was playing gospel bluegrass with no lights or p.a. system or any fanfare or if I was playing on a huge stage with a huge p.a. sysyem, fog machines, and a 30k dollar lighting system. Also, the spiritual are very much alive and well.

I understand the point of ‘caring’ for the victim BUT in all the videos I’ve listened to about this situation, I’ve heard NO ONE talk about how Pastor Robert Morris is doing. I know many will say he’s the perpetrator in the situation BUT he too is a child of God, and though flawed, a pastor, a ministry gift CALLED BY GOD. What about how HE’S doing? Like it or not, God’s mercy extends to him as well. And though this came about due to Pastor Robert’s initial wrongdoing, I still question why it took 40 years for the victim to say anything about it. Personally, I feel it was Satan’s ploy to exact as much damage to the Kingdom as possible. Additionally, I feel it’s misguided to get rid of all his teachings from various platforms and such. He is teaching from Gods Word it’s anointed. He we got rid of all the teachings of anyone who ever failed or made a mistake, there would be none left to listen to. That akin to removing all the statues of our patriot forefathers because they made mistakes in their pasts. WE HAVE ALL SINNED AND FALLEN SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD!!!
