Try listening to Burzum while walking through forest. That's what it's all about. The atmosphere and the feeling you're going to experience is one of a kind. Desolate, cold, grim yet so beautiful and connected to nature. Primeval in a sense.

The lyrics are very literally about darkness, "she" is the night, and the darkness is her cloak and the chill rising from the soil is simply the cold of the night... the song is an ode to nature and it is utterly beautiful.

do you guys actually listen to this and think "oh this shit is deep" and really connect with the lyrics. i mean the song is the most repetitive thing i have ever heard. i would appreciate it more if it wasn't the same phrasing over and over and over again and the exact same lyrics for the whole song.

To understand the meaning of this song, you have to understand that the self-declared purpose of Burzum in the old days wasn't to spread evil and mayhem or such things, but simple escapism. Varg was interested in dreaming, astral projection, and such things. The darkness in the song isn't darkness in the sense that evil is "dark" - it's darkness in the sense that night-time is more conducive to dreaming and fantasy. The message of this song is separate from Varg's politics and paganism. The early Burzum albums are structured so that you fall asleep over the course of the albums, they are meant to act as a prelude to your dreams. It's shoegaze coming from a metal and electronic background.

Sori was on the right track with "dark thinking music". This song is extremely hypnotic when you sit down and listen to it on headphones and that's where much of the appeal of Burzum's early music comes from. Also, speaking from experience, the more black metal you listen to, the more you adapt to that style of production and learn to make out the intricacies behind all the "noise". Seeing as you two have enjoyed some of what the genre has to offer (like Emperor, MGLA, Dissection, etc), I think that it's just a matter of time and added listening.

Actually, Filosofem was recorded under purposefully bad conditions in order to retain a raw lo-fi sound. Varg was working in experimentations with minimalism, repetition and ambient music (which he fully worked on the two next Burzum's albums after Filosofem). In this record he used the amplifier of his brother's stereo instead of a guitar amplifier, he also used an old fuzz pedal. And for the vocals, he asked a sound technician for the worst microphone he had in the Studio and ended up recording the vocals using a headset. Love ur videos, guys. Keep doing this awesome work, cheers from Brazil! 🤘

The appeal of Burzum, to me, and one of his important contributions to metal was that he showed the possibilty of incorporating contemplative/transcendental elemenents to the music. Riffs or techincal skills weren't that important to Burzum but instead it was all about creating a certain mood/atmosphere which gives you space to contemplate. In metal that was new (not saying he was necessarily the only guy doing it but he was certainly a trendsetter)

Partially one of the reasons for the lo-fi production in black metal was in rebellion to the more crisp sound of death metal at the time. They were trying to sound opposite of that studio quality. Maybe another way of putting it.... it isnt about all the crazy notes that are being played but the rather the intention behind the songwriting. Instead of showcasing the brutal or complex riffs, black metal uses lots of repetition and atmosphere so as to "cast a spell" over the listener/put them in a certain headspace.

Burzum is indeed "dark thinking music". Varg and many of the original Norwegian black metal group were not just into metal but a few of them were into a lot of repetitive but hypnotic underground electronic music. Burzum was by far the best that took influences from this and created black metal that was very atmospheric and repetitive but hypnotic. It's good to see that you can really distinguish between all of the different variations of black metal. Most people that listen to anything a little extreme just hear "noise". And you're right about Dimmu Borgir seeming out of place because most people wouldn't really consider, at least new, Dimmu Borgir to be black metal.

It is because Dimmu Borgir is symphonic black metal, which by meaning is a lot different from the rest of the genre. So, if someone would not distinguish symphonic vs very dark ambient atmospheric black metal, he would have to be total idiot. Vin and Sori are still not able to distinguish anything pretty much. At least, considering the fact they now talk only about the impression from music and lyrics and stopped talking BS about bands history and thoughts, I am veeeery happy. And kudos, they could go through it without mental breakdown, as many people out of the genre can hardly survive 8 mins of such distortion. For the information - Filosofem is very experimental, very ambient and first of all very complex album. The repetition is there on purpose as well as the minimum of lyrics. It also was the last album before his imprisonment. Varg wanted differ from common aggressive, raw and raging black metal albums and focused on dark atmosphere instead. You might remember his opinion about heavy black metal fans behavior ;) People are not aware that the song Dunkelheit was written under title Burzum for album Hvis lyset tar oss in 1991, but he did not like it and did not include it. Dunkelheit is just the German translation of Burzum, which is originated in the language of Mordor created by Tolkien and, of course, it means "darkness". The song is about winter walk just before hypothermia ends your life. Therefore the impenetrable darkness which living ones experience as their body is completely frozen by the chill which rises from the soil. The whole album goes this way. After all its name is Filosofem right? When... suddenly... life has new meaning :)

I recall Varg saying (many years ago) that to him this is what black metal should sound like. Very hypnotic and atmospheric and that is why people enjoy Burzum and other BM bands of this style. It takes you away and puts you into a trance or takes you elsewhere. The vocals are more of another instrument rather than to deliver lyrics

"Life has new meaning" - I don't think it's about a dark view of the world, it's more about a purer/enhanced meaning. Like when you go camping, during the day you have a certain mindset. Then, night falls, you sit around the fire, you look at the tree silhouettes, listen to the various critter sounds, occasional twig snaps, flutters, howls maybe, and you realize, finally, what you are. Part of all that. Not just part of society, but part of nature - a much grander perspective while at the same time stripping your thinking of so many abstractions. Simpler, but encompassing much more.

VinAnd Sori Vin, Burzum has always been about atmosphere. I always felt that Burzum (by the way, Burzum is just Varg Vikernes. He plays all the instruments) was almost a performance art project. Including his actions, world-view, Norway’s folklore and fairytales. He would apparently write lyrics from deep in secluded ancient forests in the middle of the night, and I could always hear that in his music for some reason.

The appeal of this kind of black metal is pretty easy for me to describe. I like the rawer, more primal production, hypnotic riffing, and dark/cold atmosphere. Also I think it's time to listen to some Bathory. There are actually two different eras of Bathory with most people recommending to you guys the later "Viking" era stuff like "One Rode To Asa Bay", which I definitely don't disagree that you check out. Earlier Bathory is just as good but had a much dirtier sound and thematically more Satanic/evil that hugely influenced the second wave black metal bands. For that era I'd recommend "Enter The Eternal Fire".

I first heard this song in 2008 and I’ve always taken the lyrics in a pretty lyrical sense. Night comes and covers the earth, morning comes and it’s chilly with maybe some dew and some fog, and a new day begins for everyone. It makes a lot more sense to me and my mentality where no matter what happens and how shitty your day is, tomorrow is a new day.

Happy you both rated it so highly. Here's my take on many of the questions / comments you raised in the video: For me, the appeal would be the hypnotic repetitive almost meditative feeling of the song. Perfect for walking at night, or in the woods. Black metal in general has a very relaxing / relieving feeling when you let go and go with the flow of the music, the drive and melody, when driving, walking, etc. Your questions on the lyrics: "she" just refers to the "night" from the previous line. The chill from the soil is just what it says: when the temperature drops the cold starts on the ground and spreads upwards as night unfolds. I think it also has to do with the mist spreading from the ground as you see often in Scandinavia. The song is literally just about darkness (hence the title) and nightfall. The last part, for me, would be about the feeling of feeling alive when night falls, a typical feeling for night owls. For me this song is not about anything sinister, it has nothing to to do with demons or such. But it's about a close connection to nature, night and darkness. In a way it's romanticizing darkness. The night (just as the sound of this song) is dark, impenetrable and beautiful at the same time. In general Burzum is not satanic but rather closely connected with his pagan roots (old norse mythology). Varg said he was inspired by underground trance music back in those days. Here you can hear him play the riffs unplugged: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bad0l7ee3anaeGg.html

""The old beliefs will be brought back to honor again. The whole secret knowledge of nature, of the divine, the demonic. We will wash off the Christian veneer and bring out a religion peculiar to our race." -A.Hitler It's kind of questionable did he really say that, but I can easily believe he did. Hitler wasn't really a christian. He got a christian education (like everyone in Germany and Austria), but that's that. He thought christianity was a weak religion for weak people. In some speeches he of course had to include christianity, because that was still majority's religion. Nazi movements one of the main goals was to remove christianity little by little and replace it with neopagan, occult, "germanic" "aryan" religion based on blood. They didn't succeed, because they lost the war. This new religion was meant to be mix of occultism, ancient religions of germanic tribes, christianity, arcane, social darwinism, eugenics, philosophy from Hegel, Nietzsche and Heidegger (just like their political ideas) + some like Himmler believed in reincarnation and rebirth. Himmler believed he was a reincarnation of "Heinrich I", the king who was a first to unite all of the germanic tribes in to same empire. The SS were meant to be "high priests" and guardians of this. Just look at the symbols of the Third Reich. From the swastika to sig runes and the SS graves. If you want to look at the some sources of inspiration for Hitler, Himmler, Rosenberg etc you should first google these three persons: -Helena Blavatsky, a Russian occultist and philosopher, co-founder of Theosophical society, esoteric religion -Karl Maria Wiligut, Austrian occultist and SS-Brigadeführer -Guido von List, Austrian occultist, "expounded a modern Pagan new religious movement known as Wotanism, which he claimed was the revival of the religion of the ancient German race, and which included an inner set of Ariosophical teachings that he termed Armanism" -Thule-society If you are interested in history and believes of the nazi leaders, I recommend you to watch a documentary called "The occult history of the Third Reich". It has four parts and you can find it also from youtube (The enigma of the Swastika, The SS Blood and soil, Himmler the mystic and Adolf Hitler). It's a good start if you are interested in the subject.

Christians are trying to denounce hitlers christianity for decades. Fact is churches preached anti semitism for centuries in Europe. Gott mitt uns (god with us) was on their uniforms and he declared doing gods work in countless of speeches. The catholic church celebrated hitlers birthday till some years after the second world war and supported him during most of the war. All this occultic and pagan stuff is true. But his anti semitism was rooted in his Christianity Hitler was a christian. You dont get to decide if someone is real christian or not or a real muslim or not. Nobody does.
@Ruhtinas84
@Ruhtinas84 6 жыл бұрын
Dennis van Opstal 1. I'm not a christian. 2. I've studied these things over 20 years, also at university level. 3. Did you even read what I wrote? Yes, churches preached antisemitism for centuries. This is why they used some parts of christianity as a tool in propaganda. And this is why Hitler's "favourite christian" was Martin Luther. Hitler was raised catholic but he liked Lutherans more because of the strong antisemitism of Martin Luther. Most christian priests sent to concentration camps were catholic. So when you are claiming Hitler was a christian, was he a catholic or a lutheran? Maybe next you should read about Nazi persecution of the Catholic Church in Germany: "The Roman Catholic Church suffered persecution in Nazi Germany. The Nazis claimed jurisdiction over all collective and social activity and the party leadership hoped to dechristianize Germany in the long term. Clergy were watched closely, and frequently denounced, arrested and sent to concentration camps. Welfare institutions were interfered with or transferred to state control. Catholic schools, press, trade unions, political parties and youth leagues were eradicated. Anti-Catholic propaganda and "morality" trials were staged. Monasteries and convents were targeted for expropriation. Prominent Catholic lay leaders were murdered, and thousands of Catholic activists were arrested. In all, an estimated one third of German priests faced some form of reprisal in Nazi Germany and 400 German priests were sent to the dedicated Priest Barracks of Dachau Concentration Camp. Persecution of the Church in Germany was at its most severe in the annexed Polish regions. Here the Nazis set about systematically dismantling the Church and most priests were murdered, deported or forced to flee. Of 2,720 clergy imprisoned at Dachau from Germany and occupied territories, the some 2,579 (or 94.88%) were Catholic. " You wrote: "All this occultic and pagan stuff is true. But his anti semitism was rooted in his Christianity Hitler was a christian. You dont get to decide if someone is real christian or not or a real muslim or not. Nobody does." Eh, you don't even seem to understand how illogical you are. "All this pagan stuff is true but he was a christian". "Nobody does" Except YOU, when you just decide he was a christian. According to you even historians or Hitler himself can't decide if he was a christian or not. His actions and speeches against weak JEWISH CHRISTIANITY, plans to dechristianize Germany in the long term seems to mean nothing to you. You just decided he was a christian and that's it......

also, Burzum's music is for relaxation/contemplation. He himself described his albums as a collection of spells(songs), and they were meant for evening listening. quoting from wikipedia : "Vikernes has described Burzum as a kind of "spell" or recreation of an imaginary world tied in with Pagan history.Each album, he claims, was designed as a kind of "spell" in itself, with each beginning song intending to make the listener more susceptible to "magic", the following songs to inspire a "trance-like state of mind", and the last song to carry the listener into a "world of fantasy" (dreams, for the listener would fall asleep-Burzum was supposed to have been evening music). Vikernes claims the intent to create this fantasy world came from dissatisfaction with the real world." PS: "burzum" means darkness, in the black tongue of Mordor, from J.R.R. Tolkien's work(yes The Lord of the Rings is immensely influential in black metal, especially when it comes to band names). Also "Dunkelheit" itself means darkness in German(afaik, only the German release of the album featured the german titled version, but thats what most people know this song as)

for me old school black metal, Norwegian Black Metal in particular is all about isolation, coldness, darkness, sadness and eternal winter. That special feeling you get when you listen to this kind of music. To some of us, this kind of emotion seeking in music is appealing.

Concerning the fact that this is really different from what you heard before like Dimmu or Emperor. Apart from its very first albums/demos where he is "screaming", like of the title "WAR". The rest of the discography of Burzum is what is called "Dark Ambient", which is another branch of Black Metal. With the other group Mortiis, both of them were pionneers in what is called now "Dungeon Synth(wave)", deriving from dark ambient, which you can clearly get in the albums he recorded when he was in prison : Hliðskjálf and Dauði Baldrs. To quote the reference blog : "Dungeon synth is the sound of the ancient crypt. The breath of the tomb, that can only be properly conveyed in music that is primitive, necro, lo-fi, forgotten, obscure, and ignored by all of mainstream society. When you listen to dungeon synth you are making a conscious choice to spend your time in a graveyard, to stare, by candle-light, into an obscure tome that holds subtle secrets about places that all sane men avoid." dungeonsynth.blogspot.com/2011/03/dungeon-synth.html So this is something really atmospheric, and something which speaks to anyone who has played at least one time to rpg like Dungeon&Dragons.

Darkthrone next... most of old early black metal (2nd scandinavian wave) is pretty simplistic and has shitty production so I can see how it is all noise to you. Was the same to me in the beginning, I abhored it. But when the atmosphere (it is all about that) gets to you, it hits hard. For some people it never does and they wonder how people can listen to this "shit", haha!

I totally feel your initial statement of "I'm still trying to figure out the appeal of this type of Black metal" by Vin. I honestly didn't enjoy this, or Mayhem, or other 2nd wave of black metal "classics" when I first heard them. Hell, I still don't particularly like it, but at least now I can listen to this and enjoy it a bit. I did however love Dissection from the 1st time I heard it. And then I heard Immortal's "At the Heart of Winter" and loved that too, even though I hate the sound\production in pretty much all of their other albums, haha. So yeah, my point being, this stuff isn't for everyone... but there is pretty good black metal out there, including old stuff. Now, after requesting Agalloch for so long, a band I love and thought Sori would love (and Vin would hate... mistakes were made!), I'm now gonna keep requesting a band I don't particularly care for - but respect as one of the best in their genre of Metal, it's just a genre I don't really listen to - because I think it would be a cool song for you 2. I mean, you clearly love catholic priests, and let's just say the topic is about them. So, "Immolation - Father you're not a father", request #3.
