Very, very good choice. A Blaze in the Northern Sky is basically THE album from that early Norwegian BM scene. Along with De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas this pathed the way for everything that has come. It was also the album that really introduced this lofi production. Darkthrone was fed up with the over-produced technical Death Metal stuff at that time and wanted to distance themselves. That is why they used a photograph as album cover, which none of the metal bands were doing at the time. It was a rebellion in more than one way ...

I think Kathaarian is possibly a reference to Cathars, a Christian group that was seen as a heretic order and excommunicated by the Catholic Church which believed the Cathars beliefs were not Christian at all and the exact opposite... This was amazing. I'm not even 4 mins in but its amazing. Also. Please, please, please try and get an interview with Fenriz from Darkthrone. He is a super nice and really really funny guy. Watch any interview with him and you will see that shine through. More thoughts after I finish the watch. Edits: This is old school trve kvlt at its best. But the production isn't total shit, which I think if you listen to interviews with Fenriz isn't suprising, he has strong opinions about how things should sound and you notice that the drum sound is actually very good here, there is still some buzziness to the guitars but its not as bad as early Mayhem. The vocals here are fantastic. Evil, terrifying and raw. This song is full of raw dark power and sinister energy, one thing I found about Darkthrone is you saw alot of the atmospheric sound that would later become more prevalent in their and Emperor's music as time went on. Its not full on atmospheric but there are parts where the pace slows down and the sinister vibe of the song is left some room to breathe. A funny note, Fenriz never really liked the corpse paint thing. According to him they didn't use it much. So its ironic you choose Darkthrone for the day you wore corpse paint. Still it was a band that had to be done. Darkthrone along with Emperor and Mayhem are the 3 pillars of true black metal. The sorta coughing, wheezing, Gollum like vocals in the beginning is like a much better version of Silencer (a terrible band you should never listen to) . Sori mugging for the camera at various points made me laugh. Also I noticed she sorta attempted to stay in character at least until you guys got deeper in to the discussion. I appreciated her effort. Also Sori's corpse paint looked really legit. Vin's was kinda like...evil Joker with a beard (sorry Vin). I think choosing to view what god did to Cain as a protection rather than a curse is......a very rose colored view. Make no mistake, that was a curse. Yes God didn't strike Cain down, but isn't it more of a curse to be forced to wonder. There is no doubt the mark was to protect him (at least as presented in the bible) but I think its a tremendous punishment to live and not be able to die except for a natural death (thats my understanding of it), one would think after murdering his brother in cold blood that Cain probably felt great remorse. One might assume that death would be a welcome release for him. A release that would only come at the end of his natural life thanks to god's "blessing of protection". Whats your understanding Vin about wether the mark was physical. There seems to be debate about wether it was a very visible mark on his face or arm, a way for god to mark him as a wanderer and outcast.

Darkthrone are actually really likeable guys. Not particularly extroverted but really decent and fun. Just check out Interviews with Fenriz, who is one half of Darkthrone. He is a gem.

Mayhem started the 2nd wave of black metal in Norway, but with this album, Darkthrone were the first to release a full-length album of Norwegian black metal on a fairly large label and really show it to the world. They were on a larger label to begin with because they actually started out as a fairly traditional Swedish-style death metal band on their first album, but when writing their follow up they decided to go in very a different direction. Their label didn't even want to release it at first. This is one of the main reasons why this song has a lot of stylistic changes. These bands were still trying to "find" their sound because black metal as we know it today didn't quite exist. So, the riffs in this song sounds like a lot of death metal from their previous style mixed with what we now think of as more traditional black metal riffs.

Darkthrone started as a death metal band on the soulside journey. The album "a blaze in the northern sky" that this is from, is their first black metal album but still has some their death metal style in the song writing. Under a funeral moon and transilvanian hunger are when they focus purely on the low-fi black metal sound.

Darkthrone was one of the most important bands for the genre. Those guys where in their 20's when they recorded A Blaze... . And their routine at that time was to record an album in one-two days or so... BTW Props for Sori for the corpse paint, You took it serious ;-) :-)

Maybe you now understand, what I was trying to tell you since you first spoke about Black Metal. From this situation and since Ablaze in the Northern Sky to Panzerfaust are the pinnacle of the genre in early 90s, plus there aren't that many tracks on each album and you already started with track one of the beginning, maybe a song by song schedule would be the most appropriate to go through this epitome of evil. Would be a good reason to introduce Darkthrone Dienstag (Tuesday). I'm sure Fenriz is gonna have a blast watching this.

You should go for something from Panzerfaust(album) like the legendary "Quintessence" (lyrics written by Varg when he was in prison fenriz asked him to write them.) The production on this album is also way better but still lofi. but yeah no earbleeding

Darkthrone changed quite a bit. They actually started as a death metal band before they started their influential run of black metal albums. Later on their punk influence started to become more prevalent on albums like The Cult Is Alive and F.O.A.D.
