Just read Rarotonga it's was suspenseful, lively, and well written. The insights of Christian's personal musing really comes through in the character of Robert Ayers. And, if you enjoy watching Christian's KZfaq videos and look forward to the next time he crosses an ocean and takes us along for the ride. This book is that advancer.

Christian, why you only have 28k subscribers is beyond me, I stumbled across your Chanel when you sailed to Hawaii & home ward bound. I was enthralled & entertained and have watched a lot of your videos.. My husband loves reading sailing books and I usually buy him a Christmas novel by an Australian writer by the name of Alan Lucas. My husband has always loved the Moby Dick story, I am going to try to purchase this beautiful book you displayed & talked of.. Just a bit of trivia, I never set foot on a yacht until I met my husband, our surname is Fletcher, my first name is Kristen, I sometimes have men and women ask or joke about my name because of the history of Mutiny of the Bounty! Thank you, and you are a polished Gem💎..

I received the philosophy of sailing for Christmas and have not been able to put it down - loved it very much sir . Power to your elbow

Such a gentleman to put off mentioning your own books until the end. I have read and thoroughly enjoyed both of them. Thanks for these new suggestions. Mutiny on the Bounty and Moby Dick are both excellent and I'm off to buy a copy of Across Islands and Oceans. How have I missed that one all these years?

It's not often one gets motivated to try something completely out of their depth or understanding, simply by watching a series of KZfaq shorts. Your videos, however, have planted some strange seed in me to want to learn to sail. I don't know whether to thank you or curse you, only time will tell. I have a feeling it will be the former...we shall see. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge.

Some excellent suggestions. Thank you. Might I suggest two additions to everyone's list? First, and one that I re-read often, "Two Years Before the Mast" by Richard Henry Dana. A superb travel log of the wild California coast and a trip around the horn, plus a great sailing adventure. Second, "Riddle of the Sands" by Erskin Childers. A story of spying, intrigue, and sailing.

I've thoroughly enjoyed your videos from a whole bunch of different perspectives. First of all you are doing what I've always wanted to do. But I always thought I was too old (I'm 65). You are proving that theory wrong. I'm also enjoying it from a different perspective. You, as a story teller, and you as a videographer. You excel at both. Keep up these great videos. I'm now a loyal subscriber. All the best from cold and rainy Boston. Jim Andersen, Cat Boat Adventures, Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts

Christian, I plan on purchasing a few of your books as soon as I get to the book store. My father taught me to sail in the 60's on Lewis Bay on Cap Cod. We spent 2 weeks every summer for a few years sailing all around that bay, up to the Kennedy Compound and getting yelled at😁. I'm 62 now and miss sailing. I'd love to go crew with you sometime. Thanks for a great channel. Happy Holidays. Hi from Syracuse NY

Excellent suggestions Christian. I have read all the O’Brien series, and loved every paragraph! Also, Two Years Before the Mast, R. H. Dana I found very interesting, being its one of the most accurate and early descriptions of early California, myself growing up in Sherman Oaks and Fullerton. Love your work sir. I am currently enjoying Philosophy of Sailing, half way thru, and already worrying that the end will arrive too soon.

Going to get your book. Reading the Patrick Obrien series now. WOW. They are amazing. Love your work sir. I am an avid solo sailor who occasionally gets the family on board too. I cannot expect them to understand but do feel obligated to give them exposure to the sights, sounds and rhythms of nature and being out on the water.

I absolutely agree with your recommendation of Moby Dick. I had to read it in high school and I couldn’t get past chapter 2. A girlfriend wrote my essay for me. I read it last year, at age 52 and savored each chapter. Alone Together is a great read. I found it thoroughly enjoyable and I don’t sail. Good video as always Christian.
@exploringlife7385 жыл бұрын
Similar re-awakening to Moby Dick here. At 40, I took a shot at it again (surprised, then, that I was eager to get past Chapter 1) at the same time that I undertook a scary attempt to dismantle an ancient, huge, and very heavy, metal swingset in my back yard. I was afraid of the immense bulk of the structure, I was afraid of the tools I needed to use, and I was afraid my determination would abruptly ebb and leave me with a mess that would remind me of my epic failure in courage. What an amazing summer that was, though; the swingset became my Whale, a rented reciprocating saw my spear, and in the heat of a sweaty summer, my long ocean voyage commenced. I was emboldened each night by Moby Dick, encouraged anew when all seemed lost or too dangerous, and, ultimately, jubilant and triumphant when the metal beast was finally brought down. I've only been in a proper sailboat once, and learned from it only that I am too sea sick to partake. So, my reads about sailing are limited, but now expanded by this video's list. One other novel, John Hersey's "Under the Eye of the Storm" ... was for me a tangentially likewise evocative tale of how a sailboat can be understood as a vessel for the human spirit, body and mind; the sea and wind as tactile encounters with time and the unknown. Another prism to glimpse into how we are all alone, but together. In my very short bucket list of wishes I hold one hope close - that one day I might be able to buy Christian Williams' books as full-video renditions, with his astounding eye, mesmerizing pace, stunning insights, poetic words and magnificent voice to guide the viewer into other realms of understanding about these deeper-than-life connections between sailing and the soul. Thank you, Mr. Williams, for the lodestar of your work.

Life has gone pretty stressful and busy of late, so I haven’t yet finished “Philosophy of Sailing,” sadly. What I’ve read is incredibly engaging, sir! Now, “Alone Together “ I’ve read twice through, with occasional glances back to various parts; it’s that good. As for Moby Dick? Ugh. Never made it past Chapter 4 or so; exhausting read. But! I shall now heed your advice and give it another go. Thanks for being so inspirational!

Love your videos and your book suggestions Christian. You have some interesting choices in your list. I'm surprised you have not included 'The Boy, Me, and the Cat'. A classic of US sailing literature from 1912. One thing that's great about it is that after reading it from cover to cover, it's easy to dip back into and read a section anytime. It's beautifully written and contains some really uplifting passages. I'm sure you will have read it and already have it on your bookshelf but, just in case you've missed it, can i recommend it to you?

That is one wonderful and also tragic book (the epilogue about his son). In the same vein of obscure but marvelous is "The Curve of Time." Your two books are as good as any. James Baldwin's are a wonder too. A 28 foot Pearson Triton around our world twice on a shoe string. Flat out amazing. Interesting that his boat, Atom, is better today than it was the day it was first commissioned in the 1960's. Sail it around the world again? Why not? Not many cars that old are ready for another 200,000 miles to be put on them. A boat an investment? Hummm. Have to think about that. As for Easton Press, any reader is just blessed when holding one of their volumes. Moby Dick is the first and nearly free gift from them when you sign up of for their 100 greatest books package. Many years ago I bit at that offer and have been immeasurable improved as a human being by diving into the "conversation." A fact about Melville, you can open any page at random and read a paragraph which will dazzle your audience. I think sometimes I can write...I can not. Some are magicians at perceiving and communicating their sense of existence. Herman was that.
