Fashion designer Alice Temperley discusses the eclectic influences behind her romantic, whimsical designs, and shares her thoughts on treasures from the Maharajas & Mughal Magnificence collection.
British fashion designer Alice Temperley is best known for her designs that incorporate luxurious fabrics, elegant embroidery, detailed printed patterns and hand finishes. Since launching Temperley London from a hotel bedroom in 2000, she has dressed celebrities ranging from Demi Moore to Kate Moss. Now stocked in 37 countries, and with a six-floor flagship store in Mayfair, Temperley London has become a mainstay of the fashion scene.
The designer can trace her interest in textile and jewellery design back to her bohemian childhood in Somerset. ‘My nickname is Magpie,’ Temperley reveals in our video, ‘because I was always collecting jewellery.’
The appreciation of fine jewels is a family affair, it transpires: ‘The whole family has always really loved dressing up and wearing head pieces and costume jewellery. My grandmother used to have lots of amazing buckles and jewels, as well as a very large collection of beautiful lace that once belonged to Queen Victoria.’

@Ankur Dey Oh, Yes! I do remember!!! When I traveled the widths and depths Mother India some jewelry pieces on display were truly remarkable! Although, not being the jeweler myself I couldn't evaluate theirs quality. But they looked flabbergastingly amazing 🐳Please, have a nice Sunday 🌻

@Ankur Dey Good Morning! I am from Tula, the Russian Federation. Currently live and reside, sojourn here... And I do too have infatuation and passion for Jewelry. Remember, when I was little I liked to view, hold and play with Mama's and Grandma's jewelry, precious and not so precious items. ...It's like one of the Agatha Christie's stories: some items started disappearing from my apartment again. Like three minute screw drivers which I received as the present at the Rabbi Naftali Cuckier seminar. Several, quite a few years ago... I simply can't find them anywhere. My name is Petr Frizen and my contact numbers are: frizenpetr@gmail.com Tel: +7-915-6816904 If You write something about the jewelry art, please, if possible, let me read. Have a nice day! With the best regards, Petr

Yusra Ilyas 😂😘lmfao those who have no leg to stand on result to name calling. And I don’t personally find bitch to be denigrating, So :P also you’ll find it serves you much better to learn how to thrash someone in an argument with intelligent conversation. The written above makes you seem deranged. And I’m not “justifying” anything, nothing needs to be justified. I am Simply stating legal and political fact. You wanna blame someone, blame the mughal maharaja who ceded it. No one demanded that specific diamond. He chose to give it up in deference to Queen Victoria during the treaty of Lahore. Funny how no one gets upset about how the Darya-I-Noor diamond had been ceded by Iran from India the exact same way. Except when Nader Shah gave the Indian crown back to the Mughal emperor he stole the entire Indian Treasury not just a handful of stones. Or how about the Orlov diamond which again was stolen by a Frenchman from a hindu temple and then sold to the Russian Count Orlov who gave it to Catherine the Great. It’s now on display at the Kremlin. Funny how the only thing that’s ever brought up are the British Crown Jewels. It’s almost like it’s not actually about the rock. How about crack a history book and look at records of the time from both sides. Ofcourse that would mean you’d have to read and not just be some Fake Woke protester, who clearly doesn’t know the facts, demanding something that was literally given away in 1849 due to military defeat. Therefore a spoil of war. Although, if it was about anything other than Hate of the British all of the aforementioned would be bitched about just as much as the Koh-I-Noor. But it’s not about “retrieving history” or “righting wrongs” you just hate the U.K. and that’s fine by stop lying and saying it’s about a diamond that was never “stolen”.

@@LaDivinaLover My dear, the British, specifically that damn Churchill is responsible directly for the death of 4.5 Million Bengalis in India. He literally induced a famine and asked why hasn't Gandhi died yet. I am simply stating a political fact. I don't see why he is celebrated because, to the families of those millions, he was no better than Hitler. I guess you can understand why one would be hateful if not despise the British. Apart from 4.5 million Bengalis, millions of Indians were raped, tortured and made slaves. The effects of those horrors are still felt to this day. Forget India, look at any other colony of the British, the story is the same. You have diamonds that are "spoils of war", but guess what you also have blood on your hands. Let us not forget what an inglorious empire it was. And let me tell you, we do not hate the UK, you guys hate yourself enough, so much so that you have voted to become a tiny set of islands in the middle of no where.

Anjana Reddy it’s not like she stole it herself! It happened in the past, history has seen FAR more cruel things than the stealing of a bloody stone. Many artefacts original from a certain country ended up in museums in another country, and not just through colonialism. Countries have been conquered and exploited all the time, history is not just my friend. But these people who study them and make them known to the world bear absolutely no guilt, stop attacking them and appreciate beauty. Beauty has no borders or nation.

The Emerald piece is my favorite but maybe it’s because I love that shade of green. The diamond necklace too is not bad but it looks like it would be so heavy on the neck. The emerald piece would look lovely on a sleek retro glam gown at the Oscars or red carpet event. Those wedding dress are so beautiful, the embroidery is not only inspired by Indian culture but looks like something from the 1920s.

Quite a delicate subject here.. But I'm going to just say that the indigenous nations (e.g the Aboriginal people of Australia, Indians of the Northern Americas and the Maori of Aotearoa) aren't as ignorant as they were 100 plus years ago, they are learning to value the Lands rather than the resources being taken for granted. Let's not focus on the crown jewels but the destruction of many people and cultures that once existed where India now is located, the theft of identity and a place to call home is the what colonisation did. At least India is a land of free (maybe a little lost??) people. New Zealand, I am praying, is yet to be liberated but it is in the process. Kaitiakitanga or the willingness to maintain and sustain a healthy earth is however, paramount priority. Peace.

Tired of all the bitterness in the comments. I'm Indian too but we have to take RESPONSIBILITY for our history. This is what happens when you lose battles throughout history. You have to surrender stuff: land, jewels, riches, etc. At least there weren't mass executions and rapes and ethnic cleansing like the Serbs did to Bosnians recently. The maharajas didn't put up a good enough fight and they were all divided. Even now in India, the politics are all about creating division.

That would be much worse.” Just utterly asinine. And secondly as I stated before the jewels were legally BOUGHT by the Qatari Royal family - you know that very wealthy family that rules Qatar. Do you think these people would be buying stolen fucking jewels??? Their collection is massive - and they are selling a small portion of the jewels. Sotheby’s as an institution always provides the provenance of each item they sell. Had these pieces been looted from India, there would have been a huge issue around this, which more than likely would have involved the Indian government. So before you start vomiting garbage, get your facts straight!
