I thought this book would answer some of my questions. However, it leaves me with even more than before.

I thought I'd have a look at the comments to see the general tenor and sure enough lots of people don't believe a word of this, think she was spoilt or just exaggerating. But quite a lot is verifiable, at least it still was when the book was written. The people who she says witnessed things, the schools, nannies and whatevers. Did anyone come out and say that they in fact didn't see her be nearly throttled to death and have to pull JC off her? I tend to mainly believe her since fame seems to give people the power to get away with all sorts of horrors (eg Jimmy Saville with a very different brand of abuse. He was totally unassailable when he was alive and people were only listened to once he'd gone). And alcoholism really does make some people into monsters. Add on a bit of childhood trauma and a personality disorder and bob's your uncle. My husband is still working through the damage inflicted by a mother with similar traits, except that she didn't have the power of celebrity.

I am so happy you asked "Did anyone come out and say that they in fact didn't see her be nearly throttled to death and have to pull JC off her?" - Please visit my website (which is an entire website DEBUNKING Christina Crawford's Lies). The link is on my channel. Also on my channel is an entire video debunking Christina's claim that Joan "choked" her in 1953. Direct link: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hNyTiZZ02Le3aWg.html In 1978, the same year Christina published her book, she gave two sworn depositions. In the first deposition, from February 1978) she is questioned over the course of seven pages of testimony, and she categorically DENIES any knowledge of this incident. The woman present during that allegation (her name is Billie Greene) said Joan did NOT do that and that Christina outright lied. I have Greene's interview on my website and her interview is also in the video I referenced above. This is cold, hard evidence of the Christina's lies. Everyone who lived IN the home, including Crawford's other children, husbands, staff, friends and even Christina's own friends have said she LIED. Not one person has ever validated any of Christina's claims of abuse.

There were Interviews done, just watched one on KZfaq, from the people that or mention. everything that was in the book and movie was said to be very exaggerated. or just an outright lie. the husband Alfred Steel said he thought something was wrong with Christopher that can't be fixed, and they both was expelled from schools a number of times.

Me too. Some of it doesn't match with other books. I believe Joan stopped drinking around the time she was a guest on that talk show in the early 70s. Joan was a great actress, but she seemed cer greatful. I also think Joan helped that girl go to school as well. Something about this doesn't feel right.

I believe some of all this is true though I think it was extremely exaggerated. Back in those days parents were very strict and children could not rebel or back talk to their parents. Parents were able to spank, slap their children it was just the way they corrected the behavior. I'm not saying it was right. I remember getting spanked with a belt and also being slapped on my face because I talked back to my mother, I'm 58 years old and that's how we got repairmened.

I read this book when I was 11 or 12 years old (1981 or 1982). Her experience sounds horrible. She's bitter. You can hear it in her reading this book.Only The Almighty knows. If it is true, she has to forgive her mother.Unforgiveness keeps you in a prison. Forgiveness frees you.

Your mother took the part so you wouldn't lose it. It was temporary and she wanted to bond with you, asking you questions about the character. Seems like a positive thing to me in her own way. Try to see the good!

Maybe Joan Crawford wasn't jealous about Christina landing a job on the show, but believed her daughter slept with someone to get the role. That's maybe why Joan was silent then asked her how she got that job.

It is so obvious Christina wanted to be in the spotlight. Joan decided not to help her anymore in the entertainment industry. I think that's one of the reasons she decided to write this book.

I can’t speak for if the abuse allegations are true or not, or if it’s an over exaggeration of discipline from a mother at her wit’s end (and with a drinking problem) but it certainly sounds - from Christina’s own words - that she, herself, was an entitled, cold, spoiled brat from the get go.

Try growing up with all the negative and none of the luxury. Does Christina realize how fortunate she was, an adopted child who would never have had any chance at TV and movie career without Joan? I don't really think this woman has a clue. She had beautiful clothes, private education, trips, parties, Europe, a beautiful home, swimming pool. (She complains about chores.) Many kids who grow up with nothing spend their entire childhoods doing many chores everyday. Could it be that she was somewhat of a wild child, at 11 yrs. old, searching out the barn hand? I would never even have considered such a thing.

It just dawned on me! Christina thought when Joan passed that she would be set and when she was cut out of the will, it pissed her off so bad that she decided to write this book trying to destroy her Mothers reputation knowing that is the worst / only way to hurt Joan!

I bought and read this book in 1978 because Joan Crawford is a big star. Good on CC for making a fortune by trashing her adoptive mother. She totally mooches off this dead celebrity.

She should have written this as a 38 year old woman instead of this dramatic child cut out of will tantrum. I have read over the years that Joan had predicted Christina would write about her. Everyone, listen to Mike Wallace 1960 interview with young Christina.

I wonder what age Christina was when she wrote her book. From what I have learnt over the years it is obvious that Joan Crawford had many issues. Quite apart from anything else, the drinking points to it. I have only listened to a bit of this and not read the book, but already she gives me the vibe of a spoilt child, who, as many people elsewhere comment, was very bitter. I am not saying she fabricated anything but, my conclusion is that Crawford was not a well woman and had many demons. I think it was healthy for Christina to talk about things to close friends, but very damaging for Crawford, their relationship, and ultimately probably, also for Christina herself to write a tell all book about it. I saw the film, as I think everyone did. I was tempted to read the book, but never did. Somehow it just didn't feel right to. My summation is that Crawford was a troubled woman, and that although Christina suffered from an emotionally difficult childhood, it was wrong of her to write the book.

Team Joan. Christina is likely embellishing the hell out of her story. Bette Davis' daughter pulled the same shit...for publicity. Wrote a horrible "tell-all" about how awful she was. Yeah, right. Perhaps a few pebbles of truth in an ocean of lies.
