My dad's the one in the plaid jacket at 1:01:53 . That's actually filmed at the federal building in Salt Lake City. My dad worked for the Small Business Administration, so they really did film on location at an authentic place of bureaucracy. That little scene took several takes. The director told Dad to look embarrassed that he was eavesdropping. He got $50 and lunch with cast and crew. Billy Dee Williams and Maria Schell were very nice.

Remacle and his lead man drove to Tijuana, Mexico, where they purchased the Chapel’s altar dressing, and wrought iron wall’s ounces…furniture was rented from the Hollywood Merchantile Furniture Gallery, & First Street Properties…including the Chapel’s pump organ…!

I was BORN AGAIN LATE on CHRISTMAS EVE night in 1972! HALLELUJAH! 🙏🙌

The Indian Chief’s vehicle was a 1959 four (4) door mint classic Cadillac sedan… the scenic artist “aged” the CAD’s pristine finish with a water-solution-paint mixed with liquid soap - upon completion of the filmed sequence - the painted “patina-aged” finish was washed clean…! Returned to the owner clean and polished…!

The high desert filming location, after the film’s completion, was left as a standing backlot, with the Chapel, the Barn, and related exterior/interior sets… because the film was ‘shopped’ as a TV series pilot… anticipating a mid-season series replacement show…! Two years later, The Osmond Studios construction division crews cleared the Government property sight…!

After seeing the original one with Poitier, this was such a disappointment...

They made a part 2!?!? Wow!!!

The film’s Set Decorator - Don Remacle - in his earlier studies had embarked upon a Catholic ministry, had studied for the priesthood… dropping out - pursuing a theatrical career as a stage/TV set designer and set decorator. Remacle was a CBS-TV staff decorator, assigned the Sonny and Cher weekly Variety series… departed to join the film’s production art department team… Remacle advised the costumer-designer DYKE DAVIS on the Nun’s wardrobe-habits; as well, advising both actor Marie Schell, and the director on correct actions at the chapel’s altar …!!!

During filming - on the exterior location - average day’s temperature was 92-96f degrees. The night interior’s windows - the exterior window frames were tarped in black duvyteen cotton materials- which intensified the interior’s heat temperatures caused by the set/acting areas…lighting instruments for filming purposes…

The Osmond Family, including Donny and Marie, produced the TV Movie, from their Provo (Utah) Television VIDEO TAPE Studio. The film’s production offices were located inside the facility’s studio office space…

The film company relocated daily from Provo, to pre-scouted exterior/interior Salt Lake City locations…for filming scenes… the company circus included 5-ton property, set dressing, film grip/camera 5-ton trucks, construction stake-bed trucks, wardrobe/costume 5-ton trucks, make-up & hair wagon, dressing room wagons, a fleet of station wagons …! The location for the Colonial mansion estate had a horse-shoe entrance driveway to the estate’s front door… the truck’s drivers, not being careful steering their drop-loads - on the narrow entry circle drive from the street - ran off into the grass lawns… upon filing completion, the film company had to repair the sprinkling plumbing.…

Ironically, the film’s production designer, Hub Braden, in 1966, was Disneyland’s Tomorrow Land Summer Musical Variety Stage Review shows stage designer, when the Osmond Brothers made their first West Coast appearance on the Disney Anaheim Park Stage. The Osmond Brothers opened the show nightly, for two-weeks, two shows a night, including weekends…! Opening night, before the show-curtain was pulled open, behind this main stage curtain, Father Osmond gathered the brothers in a circle around him, and the group, standing in a circle around their father, stood, holding hands, prayed for ten minutes before each show…!

The background cacti - were theatrical props rented from the Hollywood based “Walter Allen Plant Rentals”… the cacti had been spotted on the exterior road landscape for background exterior set dressing… locals driving - used the cacti props as target practice… the Osmond Construction shop had to repair Bullet holes in the cast-fiberglass cacti molded props surface finish… because of the damages from the target practice UTES rifles…!

Filmed during the summer - this NBC-TV Christmas movie - was actually a NBC-TV pilot for a series based upon the Catholic commune with Homer as the antagonist story line…! The TV Audience ratings was dismal - the pilot was turned down by both CBS and ABC TV networks…!

The film’s crew were based in a motel - on the Southern outskirts of Provo, Utah. The motel was in front of horse corrals-plagued with horse flies…! because of the 95f heat degree, inadequate air conditioning, open motel room open-door evening policy to cool off the interior motel room … the set decorator, Don Remacle, provided fly switches for the crew’s motel room kitchen-living accommodation …

Since the Art Director, Hub Braden, had been provided a station wagon, the Set Decorator, Don Remacle, and the costumer, Dyke Davis, were always together on a Sunday morning breakfast detail…the restaurant staff of waitress’ thought the trio were Mormon Brothers…! “if you ain’t Mormon - you ain’t S***…”

Costumer DYKE DAVIS purposely dressed down the HOMER protagonist, played by BILLY DEE WILLIAMS… including the wide-tie… DYKE had a serious sense of humor … discussing the actor’s wardrobe with both the director, RALPH NELSON, and BILLY DEE WILLIAMS…! An agreement approved…!!!

The original 1963 Lillies of The Field Sidney Poitier feature film was filmed on a small ranch property owned by Linda Ronstadt’s father on the outskirts of Phoenix, Arizona…. Homer literally must “build” the chapel, during the progress of the film…! During the night, after a day of filming, the ranch hands supervised by the property master, had to build the chapel’s progress, in order to continue the next day’s filming…. The non-union staffed crew filmed daily, in black-and-white negative 35mm, processing the film nightly, until the feature film was completed - The original director, Ralph Nelson, sold the Provo based Osmond Family on the NBC-TV MOW Christmas Special, with the premise, a cast of children, could, would be a TV Network potential mid-season replacement Series…. The MOW DECEMBER ratings so bad, NBC nixed their deal… the MOW Osmond pilot was the shopped to CBS TV, and then offered to the ABC TV Network…. The TV Series Osmond project, never became viable afterwards…. Nevertheless, the Osmond’s frequently rekindled their project’s interest for nearly two years, afterwards…!

It was surprising that the Chapel was not kept up and was in disrepair after all the people worked so hard on it! Mother Maria: "He built a Chapel." Homer: " He ain't so hot as a maintenance man, he's letting it run down." ! " It is not finished... without the bells." The movie ends with a repaired chapel, with bells, given by Pima Native Tribe. Over all a good sequel, the ending song ruined it. Jingle Bells would have been better! Amen.
