Thanks for your help in suggesting these classic Christmas songs for the medley! It was hard to limit it to only 45, but otherwise I'd be playing them well into January!
And, an extra special thanks goes to Douglas Lind, Vidad Flowers, Ivan Pang, Waylon Fairbanks, Jon Dye, Austin Russell, Christopher Ryan, Yu Kyung Chung, Toot & Paul Peijzel, the channel’s Patreon saints! 😇

@@DavidBennettPiano I hoped you would include War Is Over! By the way, did you notice that the quick ostinato in Carol Of The Bells has the exact shape of the "Dies Irae" motif? (Think Into the Unknown, the intro to Surface Pressure... even multiple times in the guitar solo from Stairway to Heaven! The pattern is down half a step, back up, and then down and back up with a minor 3rd)

In case anyone is interested, 'Carol of the Bells' wasn't originally a Christmas song! It was actually a Ukrainian New Year's folk song called 'Shchedryk' about a swallow flying into a house on New Year's (originally in April) and proclaiming they would have a bountiful year to come. In 1922, the first records of the song were being made and by 1936 an American composer copyrighted and published this Christmas version which we all know today. Anyway, Merry Christmas everyone, I wish you a bountiful year to come!

I used to love Christmas so much, especially the music. It used to give me chills, lift me up on the darkest days. Last year, around Christmastime, my dad was dying, and he passed away in January. I have been trying so hard to get that feeling of Christmas magic back this year, but it all felt so flat and sad. Until today. The way you played and arranged these songs brought back all the magic and joy, and gave me those chills again. Thank you. P.s. 'Chestnuts roasting on an open fire' was his favourite, I was so glad you included that :)

Thanks for all the efforts you put into this remarkable YT channel David, I really do appreciate the care and attention you put into every new post. Have a great Xmas and continued success through 2023 and beyond. A short list of omissions: - Please come Home for Christmas (Charles Brown 1960) covered by The Eagles 1980. - All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth (Donald Yetter Gardener 1944). - Little Saint Nick (Brian Wilson & Mike Love 1963) Beach Boys. - I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday (Roy Wood 1973) Wizzard. And one last addition parochial to the Xmas of 1985 here in Australia. Don't play this around the kiddies as was the trend during the festive season of its release. - Hey Santa Clause (Kevin "Bloody" Wilson 1985). All the Best Mate.

Meh. All the entries after 1965 are debatable; in 20 more years few of them will be remembered. "River" is a great song no doubt! but the personal agony it conveys (Joni Mitchell losing a baby) makes it a different genre.
@mikem668
@mikem668 Жыл бұрын
@@jcarty123 I'd argue the quality declined the year after I was born 🙃 I was amazed both by how many were very old and how many were composed during WWII and within a few years after. I take your point about River, but there's another way to see it. It's both nostalgic for those of us who loved it back in the day, but also highlights the sense of isolation many feel around the Christmas season. The songs also track the fragmentation of society. I recently learned that 1950 in the US was the high point of church membership. Meaning Christian churches. I once heard a joke about Irving Berlin, a Russian Jew who turned Easter into a fashion show and Christmas into a winter holiday. Listening to the list, I felt that the very old songs were timeless - even those which were repurposed - while the newer ones were transitory fluff. Empty in a way. Obviously, that could be my age, and my age is definitely a factor. But I don't believe it's the only factor. River seems timeless, it's about escape. About being sad when everyone is supposed to be happy. About being a stranger, far away from home, like Joseph, Mary and Jesus. "Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on I wish I had a river so long I would teach my feet to fly Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on" I have no idea why you think it's about the loss of an actual baby. It's about a break-up, probably with Graham Nash.

@@jcarty123 I do agree that it's a stretch to call "River" a Christmas song. The Jingle Bells reference at the beginning is for irony and setting the scene. However, River isn't about losing a baby (it's a break up song)... although Mitchell covered that in a way with "Little Green."
@jcarty123
@jcarty123 Жыл бұрын
@@mikem668 The reason I think it's about the loss of an actual baby, is because Joni Mitchell at one point said it was about the loss of an actual baby, which she wanted to sing out - except disguise it as the loss of a boyfriend. k? Let's agree she disguised it well. Now, her agony is legit. I get it about people feeling Holiday Pain if their lives are dominated by abuse or losses. But still, that makes it a different genre. Joseph, Mary and Jesus were happy - and that is kind of the point of their story. God coming into the world; the baby living; hope for redemption & Eternal Life. Just a different thing.

One of my pet peeves: it's not "Deck the Halls," it's "Deck the Hall." The song isn't about wasting time & energy making corridors look festive, but rather about sprucing up the large gathering place at the village square (the "town hall").

If you ever do another "common chord progressions" video, you should include the "I-iii-IV-V" progression, which can be considered a variation of the "major scale climb" you discussed in your last such video. This progression was used in "Heart and Soul", "Octopus's Garden", and "Crocodile Rock." Also, it would be nice to see another "songs with unusual chord progressions" video, this time with songs by the Beatles (again), Elton John, and ABBA.

I prefer the Christmas music from 1965 onward as there's a healthy mixture of joy and melancholy that comes with the season.

4:37 Fun fact: Mykola Leontovych actually arranged a popular Ukrainian folk carol called "Shchedryk" (rhymes with Cedric). It is very ancient, could be 1000+ years. The Ukrainian lyrics reveal its pagan roots. It was common practice for Christian rulers to adapt existing pre-Christian rituals to the new faith instead of just abolishing them and facing popular resistance. So the holidays celebrating the rebirth of nature in the spring became Christmas and the New Year. Later these holidays moved to wintertime. The use of swallow symbolising the coming of spring, is the most obvious hint. You don't see them in winter! I'd say this is the most popular New Year's carol in Ukraine (not Christmas carol, there's a separate word for those) and the lyrics are still used in their pagan-ish form, but nobody cares about that :) Here's the rough translation off wiki: Bountiful evening, bountiful evening, a New Year's carol; A little swallow flew into the household and started to twitter, to summon the master: "Come out, come out, O master, look at the sheep pen, there the ewes have given birth and the lambkins have been born Your goods [livestock] are great, you will have a lot of money, by selling them. You have a dark-eyebrowed beautiful wife If not money, then chaff from all the grain you will harvest you have a dark-eyebrowed beautiful wife.

Merry Christmas David and thank you so much for all I’ve learned from you this year. Dude, I could watch you play these songs for hours. You play so beautifully and effortlessly. I’ve been learning o tannenbaum this year but this list has reminded me of s few faves to add to my list, the snowman for one. I do have to say there was one huuuuuge omission, the greatest Christmas song ever recorded - When The Thames Froze. As my good friend Steve always says, it’s not Christmas until you’ve had a good blub to that song. Cheers and here’s to next year

I like these scaled back versions, so much that I am doing a week of vids for them on my channel, just a guitar and vocals with a bit of reverb... feels good to sing them, feels good to hear them

Another masterful job. I particularly liked your treatments. Quite sure some of the later examples on the timeline benefited the most, but all captured the spirit of the compositions very well.

Not sure why I want to share this but I grew up with a kind of "core" group of Christmas carols that was in one of the volumes of my family's Childcraft encyclopedias. Going by memory, they included Silent Night, Hark the Herald Angels Sing, Deck the Hall, Away in a Manger, O Christmas Tree, O Come All Ye Faithful, Joy to the World, O Little Town of Bethlehem, not sure if any others. I only learned a number of others later so I always think of them as being in a different category.
