I was 12 in 1984. I remember when the mall was packed like that and when we actually paid attention to what was happening around us instead of a phone. I miss these times. I don’t fit in with the world the way it is now. I’d hop a time machine back if I could!

The internet ruined the planet. I'd give anything to go live in this era again.

It's been weird watching shopping malls die out because of online shopping. They were the place to be most my life. I walk into them now and theres hardly anyone there, but in my mind I can still see the crowds of people flowing through them. Never thought I would see them die out.

I want to go back to that beautiful time. The 80's was the best decade ever!!!!!

Im literally brought to tears seeing this. I miss this time so so very much. I was young and happy and healthy. My family was all alive and happy. We had hope and Christmas and holidays were magical. The energy in the air at the Malls during Christmas was wonderful. Christmas songs, the crowds, everyone happy. You could just sit and people watch and just take it all in.

This is how I remember the malls during the holidays. No parking. Everyone in the holiday spirit. Now you go to the mall during the holidays and everyone is in a bad mood. The mall is half empty. The internet with all the good it has done has also had just as much of a negative effect. Just IMO. Kids Born in the late 90s and later just will never understand how simple life was. Yes it had its problems and issues, but you knew your neighbors, there was human to human contact, the holidays were magical, going to the mall was actually fun. I truly miss my grandparents and relatives who were all born in the 1920s. I would give anything to spend one more holiday with them. I really took things for granted as a kid and into my teens. I couldn’t wait to grow up now that I’m grown up with kids of my own, I truly regret not living in the moment when I was younger. Life goes by fast my friends. Now that we are so distracted and disconnected it feels like it goes by even faster. These videos do help a little though. Thank you 🙏🙏🙏

1984 was what I call the happy era in my life. It seemed to be a happy and hopeful year for most Americans. It seemed everything was new and fresh and you didn’t see the decay like you see today. The 2020s seem to be the decade of decay for retail like the malls. Only hardware and grocery stores it seems are doing well. I guess Americans don’t have the money to spend because the cost of housing sucks it all up. Young people have no hope today of actually buying a home now because the prices are insane. In 1984 it seemed everything was fresh, new, and alive. Not dying and decaying like today.

People actually use money back then. Now a days most places don’t even take money. These old videos are a treasure. Those were anxiety free days. Hope whoever reads this has peace in their life. ❤

I was 18... you guys, it was truly a great time. Today, when in think about how things were, It almost feels like there was a happy golucky innocence ...we were all just chill, looking at mtv videos, listening to the radio, shopping at malls, hanging out at parks, picnics, bike rides, block parties, smoking pot was considered edgy. You never even thought about being mugged or pushed onto train tracks when visiting downtown Chicago... people were Def friendlier in all Chicago neighborhoods. I grew up in the north and south sides of Chicago. Never ever had problems... ever.

Never worried about random shootings in those days. I was 8 years old. Loved growing up in 80s. The 80s were great years. Life will never be that way again.

Watching this makes me realize how badly we are failing as a society now. Every other person isn’t obese & in a scooter. People dressed nice, even to just do Christmas shopping. You could feel safe out & about, despite the crowds. People just had respect for one another. You don’t see guys with pants half way down their butt or people face down in their phones (talking on speaker phone no less). I miss these times. Seeing this these videos makes me realize just how much I miss these times.

I married in 1983. At the time, my now ex-husband worked at a local mall. I went to pick him up on Christmas Eve because we only had one car. The paking lot was huge, but I couldn't find parking anywhere. Finally found one lonely spot way out by the road. I had to walk in to get him, because you know, there were no cell phones then. It was a long trudge in and out. Good times. 😂 That mall was just demolished a few months ago.

I was 20 years old in 1984 and I would give ANYTHING to return to those times. 😃

This brings back such happy memories for me. I was in high school in 1984. Believe it or not, we'd get dressed up, just to go to the mall! It was THE place to hang out with your friends. Sorry to say, we will never experience this again. I'm just so thankful I got to enjoy it and can still remember what it was like.

I would love to go back in time on this day and walk around experiencing the atmosphere, stores, people, styles, smells, etc. Then you would find me in the parking lot checking out all the classic cars. You know how long it's been since I've seen a Chevette on the road? Also eat at several places at the food court and compare to now.😂

For the younger viewers here, this precisely why us teens hit the mall every single weekend! Nothing like hanging out, chasing the opposite sex & eating whatever we wanted to. Oh, & let's not forget that we could smoke while walking around 😂😂! Glad that ended. But yes, the mall was the place to be in 1984 ❤

I was 16 and a sophomore in 1984, what an amazing time it was. The future looked bright, computers were becoming mainstream in the home, and the movies were awesome. If only we realized back then how special that era was compared to today. It's quite sad, really.

I’m watching this in December 2023. I was 17 in 1984 and the mall or outlet’s was where I got everything . Heck walking the mall with your friends or even your boyfriend, was the thing to do.

Noticed a few things about the lot - particularly no SUV's, no cell phones and few reverse parkers! Happy days for us teens in the 80's. Don't envy them now.

I was only 3 years old in ‘84. I remember getting a blue Smurf guitar for Christmas that year. My older sister who was 9 at the time got a Cabbage Patch Doll for Christmas that year. She named her Kimberly. I remember her head would come off sometimes.

Lots of peak mall videos on this channel, which is great. Such footage is difficult to come by. Many viewers on various dead mall channels ask what malls looked like back then. Often about all one can find are some sparse photographs. Glad to see video of malls in their heyday.

The vibe pre- 9/11 was epic. I was 3. I miss those days!! No one walking into shit on their phone. Ppl interacting & smiling instead of scowling!

Something that stands out is how people/adults are sitting on the floor, against the wall, eating their lunch. There seems to be a more casual attitude about things, and you just don't see that as much these days.

I remember a store called Sherman Clay that was in local mall they always had a big keyboard or synthesizer set up and playing you could hear it from a long way off.

1984 was definitely the first full year of the 80s culture as you can tell from the hair and fashion in this video. If you watch the videos from 80 through 82 and parts of 83 you can see that late 70s culture still heavily represented, but here it's like a different world as the 80s have arrived in full bloom. You can feel it in late 83 as well.

I was 11 in 1984 and now I am 51. It a reminder how fast time goes by. All the children here are in their 40's now. It was a beautiful moment.

I was 22 in 1984. Worked in a big discount dept store, Murphys Mart. Boy does this take me back! I used to volunteer to work up front at the checkouts, just to meet n greet the customers. Now I'm a 62 year old hermit! 😅

Only the biggest and busiest malls can come close to what this was like in the 80s. I was a little kid in the 80s and can barely remember the crowds at the Woodfield Mall outside Chicago but malls were different back then. They had a life of their own that can't be explained unless you were there.

I was 24 in 1984 and it was the first time I was exposed to the Must-Haves trends. I was wearing a new pair of Reeboks, which I bought just because they were comfortable. I had complete strangers coming up to me saying, "Oh you have the new Reeboks, how are they"? I was shocked. The craze for lot's of thing started in the 80's and I stayed out of it; I wasn't one to follow trends.

I bet back in the 80’s, people were like, “why are you filming us shopping?” “It’s the busiest time of year!” But it’s a genius idea! To capture the past, to one of the best eras of all time.

I remember the radioflyer red wagon we got for Christmas that year. I was as happy as a kid could be.

Yup, those were good times. I remember the mall being super packed as I window shopped and browsed around as my mom bought gifts. I got my first big allowance too that year, and I got a chance to buy gifts for the family too. I can still taste my burger, fries (which Mom kept stealing off my plate...Lol!), and that icy strawberry milkshake for lunch. Fun times!

I love this era all way from after WWII up to the 90s. Before any covid, racism, theft, crime, etc...kids had stores and a Toys R Us to visit. Now all you have is amazon where the rich get richer. I feel bad for kids in this present time.
