Sailing was recorded in 1979, utilizing the 3M Digital Recording System, making it one of the first digitally recorded songs to chart. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on August 30, 1980. The song won Grammy Awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Arrangement of the Year, and helped Cross win the Best New Artist award. Produced by Michael Omartian, it features Tommy Taylor on drums, Andy Salmon on bass, Rob Meurer on electric piano, and Victor Feldman on percussion. In 1980, Sailing was released as a single in Latin America under the translated (en español) title "Navegando".
On the Howard Stern radio show, Cross explained that sailing with his friend got him away from the trials and tribulations of being a teenager. Cross said that if the guy had taken him bowling and he enjoyed it, the song could have become "Bowling."
This live video was recorded at Warner Amigo Studios in 1980 and featured a live audio cut (different from the one featured in this upload) for use where the band would be lip-syncing on television, to be more realistic than the missing orchestra. This footage has been digitally enhanced to HD quality and features audio from the 2019 remaster of Cross' 1979 debut self-titled album:

LYRICS
Well, it's not far down to paradise
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
And find tranquility
Oh, the canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me
It's not far to never never land
No reason to pretend
And if the wind is right you can find the joy
Of innocence again
Oh, the canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me
Sailing
Takes me away to where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
Soon I will be free
Fantasy
It gets the best of me
When I'm sailing
All caught up in the reverie
Every word is a symphony
Won't you believe me?
Sailing
Takes me away to where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free
[Instrumental Bridge]
Well, it's not far back to sanity
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
And find serenity
Oh, the canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Really, believe me
Sailing
Takes me away to where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free
ABOUT CHRISTOPHER CROSS
Christopher Cross burst onto the music scene with his 1979 self-titled debut album produced by Michael Omartian. The lead single “Ride Like The Wind” spent 4 weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and was quickly followed up by Cross’ most popular single to date (and first #1 hit) “Sailing”, which later became known as the archetype for the Yacht Rock genre. In 1981, Cross became the first artist in Grammy history to win the “Big Four” most prestigious awards in a single night; Record of the Year (for the single “Sailing”), Album of the Year, Song of the Year (also “Sailing”), and Best New Artist. Later that year Cross released “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)” which he co-wrote with Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer, Peter Allen, and was the title-theme for the 1981 film “Arthur” starring Dudley Moorre and Liza Minnelli. The song earned Cross his second #1 and the Oscar for Best Original Song at the 1981 Academy Awards. Cross’ sophomore album “Another Page” was released in 1983 and featured the singles “Think of Laura” and “All Right”. Cross has sold over 10M albums worldwide and his songs have been covered and sampled by NSYNC, Puff Daddy, Avant, Shirley Bassey, Dione Warwick, and many more.

The beauty of Sailing is that it resonates with so many people, it can be interpreted as simply being in a boat on the water or as complex as the transition we experience through art. I have been very touched by the way people relate to the song. - Christopher Cross

I rediscovered this song today after 1st hearing it when I was 9years old. It brings back so much joy and calmness to my heart. It really makes the stress go away. Thank you CC for this gift.

Every time I hear this song it takes me back to a job I had back then. I met this fantastic girl that I pretty much fell in love with immediately, but she didn't notice really. We went out a couple times as friends, I quit that job, didn't see her for months (I was 80 miles away) came back almost a year later on a fluke to that same company, and well, that girl has been my wife for 41 years now, two kids and three grandkids...ANYTHING can happen when you're not looking!! Interesting part is the part that really sounds like the water. The opening cords were added by the producer after the song was completed and weren’t Christopher Cross’ contribution at all and that repeated sound, which sounds like a gentle waves splashing was the producers. I wish I knew his name because he really made this song what it is.❤❤

1980, driving across the bridge from Somers Point NJ into Ocean City, this song playing on the old Buick 225, the sun hitting the ripples of the waves around the bridge and those "light chimes" that you hear throughout the song playing.. 20 years old, alone and not a worry in the world. Would drive back to my apartment, boyfriend waiting there to greet me after a long day at his job. Married soon after and did the same with our kids,, Life was good and still is, 44 years later. We hit the beach often in our golden years, children grown, memories made and still being made. Play this song when driving to the shore still.

This song has NEVER aged for me, and there were so many musical nuances in the music, coupled with lyrics that are like a gentle lullaby. My husband and I were both teens in the 80s, and he has always been a devoted metal music fan. I played this timeless song on the way home from Florida, and as we passed the ocean on the way out, he and I both felt every word and every note. He has been a Christopher Cross fan ever since❤

I had a Grandfather who from Newfoundland crafted sailboats/boats in bottles - I think he would have been a fisherman had he stayed there-along with my family who had a cottage on Georgin Bay where you would always see the sails and spinnakers Beautiful on the water - to the Splendid song "Sailing"by Mr. Christopher Cross! I was so inspired by all of this around me that I purchased a print by Christopher Blossom an American Nautical painter called "silhouette" which is a sailboat sailing off the coast of Maine which reminds me of Georgian Bay-All such Beautiful connections to probably one of the most powerful and historical moments which is the capture/harnessing of wind by man and is the Miracle of the Sail!

@reygab3880 It is technically 70s, but it drove home the 80s. It's played in every 80s movie or anything that pays tribute to the 80s

my 92 year old grandfather JUST passed and fair winds and following seas.......he LOVED sailing.....and this song will ALWAYS now remind me of him and the DREAMS he wants to me to achieve. god....cherish life and loved ones folks because it can all be over like THAT, sometimes you NEVER see it coming. Then, Carole King might have something to sing for you, lol. But seriously, live every minute of life, because the only thing certain we have is what we have, and it only lasts for so long.

What Christopher did here was produce a piece of art for the ages. It cuts through all strife, all hurt, all pain. Its one of the most redemptive pieces of music ever produced and it affects what it describes: surrender of the self through being immersed in utter beauty. I think that this is Christopher's lived experience. Few can regift such moments for everyone else, but that is what he did through the miracle of his canvass. Thank you Christopher.

As sailing on a perfect day the coming together of the skipper, the wind and the boat reach that Serenity that Christopher Cross catches so Epically, Serenely, and Calmly is so Beautiful on so many levels it's Healing to the Human Soul! It's this capture that Christopher Cross has created as if painted by Celestial Angels in Heaven whose light has been transfered from God himself for us Earthbound Spirits!
