This is the first solo album by Christopher Franke and was released in 1991. So 4 years after he left the band Tangerine Dream in 1987. In Tangerine Dream Franke was known to be responsible for strong and fast and sometimes driving rhythms by means of sequencers. He was for quite a few fans of TD the one who had the biggest share in the creation of the music and sounds of Tangerine Dream in the eighties. He was, so to speak, like on stage at the concerts the man in the middle, one could also say the soul of the band until his departure. The CD uploaded here contains much quieter music than one was used to from Christopher Franke at TD. Not every fan will be immediately enthusiastic, but I still find the music worth listening to and not boring at all.

Chris was an endorsee of Sound Source Unlimited 3rd party sounds. Back in the 90’s we met a couple times where I was VP there at SSU. A multitalented Artist who was also kind and interesting to discuss music with. He gave me a signed live album and I enjoyed his musical creations so much that I bought many of his cds/albums inc PCH of which I still play weekly.

This is an album I never managed to buy, but I have its live companion, the London Concert. The interesting thing is that some tracks display the same softer and melodious side that Chris had already shown in parts of Le Parc (Yellowstone Park is practically identical in vein to this album) and Underwater Sunlight (Song of the Whale Part 1). The curious (and a little sad) thing is, once he had released everything that he still had in the classic style of TD, he changed course abruptly, perhaps consciously not wanting to compete with his former mates, who in turn also pursued new styles, to much controversy among fans.

I don't know what caused Franke to change his musical style after 1995. Perhaps only because it became necessary to compose the appropriate music for television series. The music here on the PCH album is perhaps similar to the London concert because it was composed at almost the same time. The piece "Purple Waves" makes a large part as a long version at the concert. So it is the live performance of the studio album Pacific Coast Highway. Nevertheless, as a fan you should not do without one of the two CD's. I don't know how much Chris Franke contributed to the album Le Parc. With Yellowstone Park one could think of the live tour 1977, because at the beginning of the piece Monolight the same background noise was produced which is to be heard then also again in the title Yellowstone Park. So Franke could be the "inventor" of it. The sound can also be heard in the 2nd track from the "Klemania" album.

@@theodorrand Now that you've mentioned it, another Franke signature sound is the synthesized bird call that is very prominent in the beginning of the White Eagle album and appears multiple times in subsequent TD pieces and even on the B5 soundtrack.

@@theodorrand Yellowstone Park sounds like a CF piece because of the melody and harmony, already used elsewhere in TD's catalog, but what really gives it away is the corny Japanese flute sample 😊

@@MarioVAmaya But that was the only piece of TD which contained the sound image. I personally found that good, the whole song was different, already because of the overlaid female voice in the melody. Only ENIGMA (Michael Cretu) made this sound world famous in 1990, which I would call electronic pan flute sound. Likewise CUSCO, a music project from Germany consisting of Michael Holm and Christian Schultze. They also used these instruments in the early 90s.

Hello! That's great that you were allowed into Mister Franke's recording studio. Too bad that you could not meet him, but better than nothing as they say. The CD with autograph you get but also not just like that? Many of the instruments are probably still from the good old days where he was still a member of Tangerine Dream. As far as I know, Franke also had custom-made instruments to develop even more sounds. Thanks for your great comment.

Admiro la música de Christopher Franke, sobre todo The London Concert, donde nos muestra su lado mas melódico. Luego compré el álbum Klemania, totalmente contrapuesto, con un primer tema muy techno a mi juicio.

The music of the members of Tangerine Dream who made solo records while they were still members or after leaving is not my favorite music either. I find only the members together as a group Tangerine Dream until 1987, the band was musically unique. As well as the music in general, so the pop music from the 1990s has changed in my opinion often to the negative, compared to the 80s. That's my perception, other people may not see it that way. I think if Franke, Froese and Schmoelling had still been making music together as Tangerine Dream in the 1990s or longer, the music would not have been the same.

Ever since he was banished, the creature blindly wondered if the dark twigs of the forest, the speckled sunlight guiding him on his way, he engulfed every sunburn in his shimmering throat as if he had never tasted nor seen such beauty. For even with dirty feet, torn by wandering brambles and a halo of hair that has now turned into a mane, he has found his belief in the setting sun. Eventually, however, this journey came to an end. Not distinct, but with one breath, the blind man knew that the immortal world he had known for all his many years had drifted away from his mortal body. The swamp men and their gem-decorated trees echoing in the breeze, the ethereal handmaids of the earth singing seductive melodies, every bird song he was accustomed to had ceased. He had finally gone to the next world. It was dark in here, and it smelled of the wet and shady valley 🧙‍♂🧞‍♂
