He lives and we all and our children will ensure he does; warts and all. A wonderful man and the best essayist I have read. He even troubled to write me a letter of advice on a piece I had written: he needn't have but did. Gracious and kind. A great man. A model Briton, if I may say so. RIP C.E.H. Unforgotten; unforgettable. Thank you.

What a remarkable deal we all got. Without leaving our seat we listen, eagerly and with awe to Hitch combining his enormous intellect, incisive mind and voluminous knowledge of writing, history, literature and humanity in the mind and body of a decent, kind and beautiful humanitarian. We have lost a great mind and champion of what is right and good. For me he has lit a fire that I am learning to control and utilise constructively. I know I will never reach his enormous brilliance (won't come even close) but I can always ask myself, 'what would Hitch think about this'? 'How might he have expressed this"? I can review his massive volumes of work and review his debates and speeches and still know he is alive an enriching a new audience. Thankyou Hitch - wish I had met you or even heard you speak in person.

The HITCH really got around. He traveled where few would dare to go for the inside scoop at the core of the controversial issues. He was a kind man trying to give us fair warning about ignorance with power. "The sleep of reason brings on monsters".His memory for detail still amazes me and his home looked like a library. Gosh I was so young when I first heard of Hitchens - this guy is one of the persons who really made an impact on my view of the world and my own existance. Well I would say he changed my life and I miss him - I really miss him - the world lost a bit of its beauty on the day christopher died. I was never a believer but I was always searching for something magical and beautiful - the world and reality was not enough for me. Hitchens opened my eyes for the beauty and the wonders of our existance.

The brain power in that room is off the charts,............but the loss of one of the best examples of such in the last 25 years is tragic. Mr. Hitchens called them as he saw them ,...............with explanations that included the full bore of the English language and the agile mind of a master orator. His debates are some of the best ever......just unstoppable, quick wit and photographic recall of events and quotes. My condolences to the Hitchens family, both immediate and extended.

I completely concur. It was beautiful in every sense. I love his last statement;" I hope he was surprised by the answer. I hope to hear him tell about it someday. He will tell it really well." As it implies that Hitchen's mastery of rhetorics and metaphor, can make even the most evil, vile, disgusting and dictatorial idea seem wonderful, extraordinary and complimentary. His intellect and fighting for free-inquiry will surely be missed.

I've also found myself tearing up at footage of him meeting & speaking with his fans when he was sick, of remembrances by colleagues/ friends & at this memorial. I can't help but love him, marvel at his uniqueness & grieve his loss (& my b-day's Apr.14, 1 day after his!) I wonder if he knew what an impact he would leave on everyone who has a brain to think with? I think few in history have touched as many, unless they did it in a cruel and terrible way. Not so our Hitch, he makes us think and wants us to see the truth, challenges us to do the right thing and abhors inaction. Since there is no god, all the credit for who and what Hitch was goes to himself and we can all be grateful he was ours once. Missed now and never to be replaced.

I'm afraid I have to agree with that, only in the context of his refusing to let go of his idea that the second invasion of Iraq was justified and worthwhile, regardless of whether there were any weapons of mass destruction. 100,000 dead Iraqis (most of them civilians and conscripted young men with little training) would disagree with his assessment.

I fell in love with Hitch about 9 months ago... soon after I found out he was dead. At first it was sad but it did not bother me too horribly much... since then I have read his books... and every single day I watch at least one lecture or debate by him. Now I often cry and wonder "Now what?" I often see things on the news and think "I wonder what Hitch would say about this." I miss him every day and my biggest regret was not knowing about him sooner because it is too late to have met him.

I only said they are also tools for determining thing... different things. Some like Philosophy cannot reveal truths, only values. But the scientific method is a self-correcting, methodical approach to determining the nature of reality, and proving it by repeatability and universal corroboration. Your belief, based on words in a book, cannot be tested, proven, repeated, etc. Uh... that's why you theists must rely on blind faith instead of evidence... because there is no evidence for it.

Please. "They" did not read this passage at the memorial, Hitchens' brother, a confessional Christian who has debated Christopher a number of times on their respective beliefs, read it, for what complex set of reasons is hard to evaluate. He said it was because Hitchens himself had read it at their father's funeral; but I suspect it was in part a last word that his brother could not respond to, and I find it hard to completely respect on that score. Don't read into things -- not appropriate.
