Christopher Morel is batting .202 with 18 homers while struggling mightily at third base so far this season. Is Morel helping or hurting the Cubs? Plus: The Cubs still could trade for a catcher and the MLB Draft begins.

Morel is the ultimate enigma. Like I said he reminds me of a guy named Frank. Hits some homers, makes a lot of errors on defense and strikes out too much. I feel we've been Schwindeled. I love the guy's enthusiasm and all that and maybe over time he'll figure it out and be a better player. I really hope he does.

A lot of stuff has gone down the tubes regarding MLB in my opinion. The All Star b.s. as Sam mentioned is just a tip of the iceberg. Glad you mentioned it. I haven't watched any of the A.S. stuff for years. Tack on the insane analytical nonsense, the ridiculous rise in costs (and on the side) the out of control betting crappola. I could continue, but for the one or two people who bother to read this you probably catch my drift.

Morel is still young. He only played 36 games in AAA. He has raw talent and it’s only a matter of time, effort, and good guidance for him to become an above average MLB player. Although it’s been tough to see him struggle this year, he’s still the main reason I turn on a Cubs game. I think he’s going to have a much better second half of the season and end up with 35 homers, plus get his BA to at least mid-team average.

When guys aren’t hitting, they shouldn’t be hitting near the top of the order. Morel should be no higher than fifth until he starts hitting, if ever. Same thing with Happ, he was hitting third and ice cold. When guys aren’t hitting, they have to be down in the order, if in the lineup at all. I hope the front office isn’t dictating where and when these guys play. I just don’t believe Counsel kept these guys at the top of the order waiting for them to catch fire. May and June were terrible. Between the pen blowing half the save opportunities and no offense, we should have ten to twelve more wins.

Craig has this dude hitting 4th or 5th. He's a .190 hitter who continually comes up with runners on and whiffs or hits into a DP. He should hit 8th, sometimes, against lefties. Or be in AAA along with Wisdom, another whiff king. They are taking up two roster spots. Morel cannot field, throw, or hit. He does have power, he does have speed and a strong arm. Power does not matter if you whiff or hit long fly balls to the SS. A strong arm,, who cares if you throw it into the stands or 5 feet wide of the bag? Speed is good....if you get on base.

I think we've missed the mark on Morel. He hasn't played well enough to justify keeping him over some of the established vets or young talent. He has little to no current trade value and he's on a 1 year deal. I'd be shocked if we keep him around after this year, especially when you consider Shaw and Triantos are likely moving up to AAA soon. Plus we drafted Cam Smith. I hope Morel proves me wrong in the second half of the season.

The HR derby was horrible. Exactly put the right way guys. It’s like watching it on MLB The Show on fast play. Smh. Anyway, the mistake with Morel is putting him at third in a science experiment. The other stars or big boppers on the team, if they produced, we’d forgive more. He’s a threat but there’s no plan at the plate. The thing is with a guy like him, 3 years down the line he could literally figure out the bat and the strike outs overnight and he becomes an Acuna Jr type. Or he could stay the same he is now and fizzle out. I could see the Cubs give up on him and in true Cubs fashion, would be another Cub to go to another team and become an All Star.

I have said several times in comments this is a coaching failure. Their job is to teach players how to make adjustments. If he's refusing to learn then bench him or send him down. The team as a whole makes A LOT of outs swinging at first pitches. No thought of making pitchers work. What happened to situational baseball?
@DionysusAlS
@DionysusAlS Ай бұрын
The fact the Cubs spent their first two picks on third base prospects tells you all you need to know about what they think about Morel. You can't have a position player taking up a precious roster spot that can only hit and doesn't have a position in the field (you need to carry 13 or 14 pitchers these days). Even generational hitters like Judge and Ohtani are expected to contribute quite a bit fielding or pitching, and Morel isn't in the same universe as them. The question is, when do you cut ties and risk him blossoming with another organization and becoming another "one that got away?" Then again, if you keep him too long before declaring him a lost cause, he'll have cost you countless baseball games and possibly even cost the team a playoff appearance. I don't envy Cubs management in figuring out what to do with him. I personally would give him the rest of 2024 to turn things around, and if he can't, I'd ship him to another team in the off-season for a couple of decent prospects. Sending him back down to the minors will be absolutely useless-- there's nothing more he can learn there.

Javy Baez reincarnated minus the defense. If Morel could learn to ditch the home run hack when the team just needs a base hit, he could be a star. If he could be your 7 hitter, great. But as a 4 hitter he shuts down more scoring chances than he creates by far.

Here's my answer BEFORE I watch the video. How can he be hurting the Cubs? He leads the team in HR, he's second in RBI and 4th in runs scored. He's second on the team in walks and has struck out less than Happ and Busch. If Swanson and Suzuki hadn't missed time, they would have struck out more than Morel as well. His defense is horrible, but there's a spot called the DH, which is perfect for him. I don't get the question.

You don’t get the question?!!!? He swings so hard he barely has a chance to hit. He has very quick bat speed. Doesn’t mean he has to swing as hard as he can. Just ask my favorite player, Javy Baez how that’s worked for him? Good pitchers? Make easy work of him. When he started taking called 3rd strikes down the pipe? I knew he wasn’t spitting on those breaking balls bc he saw the spin. If he doesn’t pull it? He s only got -10 hits to the right side of 2nd base. And maybe half that, that were any good. Demoting him would be the best play. And everything is fun and games. It should be fun. But it’s like he doesn’t hustle all the time, and he’s more into the celebrations than anything. 18 HOMERUNS!!! And. He’s a 0.0 player!! That’s hard to do. Send him to AAA and have him play LF/RF or 1b/2b and call up Caissie and/or Mo-Baller! And for whatever sakes!! Let Canario play some!! Or He’s he’s going to go Him .240-.260 with 20-25 HR every year for 10 years. And why else bring him along for the least several years!!?!!?!!

The only stats that Morel has improved in, this season, is walks and K's. Last year he was a free swinger. He struck out a lot and took very few walks, but he hit .247, 26 HR, drove in 70 and scored 62 runs......in only 33 more plate appearances. This year, he's walking more and striking out less, but he's hit 8 fewer HR, he's down 20 in both RBI and Runs Scored and he's only hitting .202. Let him go back to swinging the bat. I think concentrating on walking more is screwing with him.
