Any handsome actor can train and have the muscles to wear Superman's suit. But only Christopher Reeve was able to effortlessly exude the humility, dignity and innocence that the Superman character is supposed to be all about.

Personally, I think Tyler Hoechin finally is the only other actor to truly 'get' Superman, and in many ways the story of Superman and Lois far surpasses Donner's take. But still, the iconography of the original will always remain, along with Reeve's true understanding of the character.

@@rjg02005 Hoechin's shows (Supergirl, Superman & Lois) also didn't have some of the negative baggage which Donner brought. I love the films, but I strongly disagree with Donner's concept that Clark and Lois can never be together, because his responsibility to the world is too great to ever allow himself to be in a relationship with one person (basically Superman II's plot in a nutshell). Donner also addresses his humanity, but focuses too much on him being alien/Kryptonian first, again not my preference. Superman & Lois addresses both responsibilities, to his family and the world, and shows how he struggles to balance both, but ultimately shows a good life with him and a family, something Donner always insists Superman isn't allowed to have.

He has all of these powers, but he's got the maturity, he's got the innocence really, to look at the world very, very simply. That's what makes him so different. Exactly. Honesty and self deprecation. Achieves the look by sheer hard work. An actor these days wouldn't mention the inevitable steroids (that we all know they're guzzling, right Tom Hardy?) and when asked how they're feeling they'd say something like "I feel great, everything's awesome, the film is going to great, just everything is perfect and I'm in control of everything, blah di blah di blah". As perfect as Chris was (and he was), the primary difference between him and the other actors is that he had better material to work with, and a director that respected the source material. He just got it! The dichotomy in his performance between the diffident Clarke Kent and the Man of Steel. He was absolutely perfect! There are so many, but I love the moment he's trying to tell Lois in Superman 2. He takes glasses off. Stands upright. Becomes Superman. Then retracts back to spectacled Clarke with a simple stoop. So simple - He just nailed it! RIP Christopher. Always missed!

@Paul Butcher I couldn't agree more! One of the standout acting moments in the film- really in any film. It is a fairly simple scene, but the way Reeve executes the duality is an absolute master class in how to own and embody a character. He IS both versions of the same persona.

His quote about what makes Superman so great, his naivete, his innocence...that's something that's sorely missing from the recent Superman movies. As the world gets darker, Superman should be the one thing that doesn't, but his more recent appearances seem to just funnel him along he same grimdark pattern that executives think sells movie tickets.

Both a young Reeve in his prime and the current Superman, Henry Cavill were and are handsome and physical specimens. Which is how it should be because Superman is supposed to be an ideal and an Adonis. I remember a female writer once saying of Cavill that she thought he looked like a male-model and was too good-looking to play Superman but I think that that writer was missing the point. Superman is SUPPOSED to be a good-looking guy and to look like a male-model! Just like Captain America or Thor or Wonder Woman, a defining physical characteristic of the character of Superman is his appearance. Obviously there is far more to him than merely his looks and physical appearance but it is an important component of what makes the character who he is. This is going to sound terrible and possibly even shallow but the saying that looks don`t matter and it is what on the inside that counts isn`t applicable to certain situations. The fact of the matter is that looks DO MATTER for a character like Superman and he can`t be played by someone who isn`t attractive and physically fit. Like Wonder Woman, he`s attractive on the outside and on the inside- in terms of having of a good personality and admirable personality traits.

THAT is what made him the true SUPERMAN; because he was Clark Kent for 18 years before he ever learned he was Kal-El, and Superman is BOTH; and the story was about the conflict between his two fathers, and we saw in the end that Clark Kent won out.

I love how at the end he talks about how people don't take Superman's pure, innocent, black and white view of the world seriously. Even in the 70's, when making a campy movie they knew they had to get you to buy his boyscout point of view. Superman isn't supposed to be 'real'. He's what a farmboy from Kansas wanted a hero to be. Clark Kent woke up one day with superpowers and decided to make his childhood dream a reality. Because that is the perfect way to inspire people to do good so they won't need Superman like they did.

Tom welling from smallville is definietly one of my favourites. henry cavill isnt too shabby either has the looks and build etc but personality not so much." Because as this interview shows, Chris Reeve the person, has the same CHARACTER-MOTIVATION of Superman; i.e. he's actually shy, humble and honest like Clark Kent, but also balancing that with Superman's powers, and having to deal with the conflict-- like when he violates the Prime Directive against changing human history. The others are SHIT when it comes to the depth of Superman's character; they only play Kal-El, but the story was how Clark Kent won out OVER him in terms of his mortal choices. So in a sense, Christopher Reeve IS Superman-- not the flash and bravado, but the INNER character. Like when Chris Reeve's Superman first wanted to tell Lois that he was Superman, but then he decided against it; also there's the deleted scenes where he felt conflicted over using his abilities, and the need to keep his identity a secret in order to protect others from hurting him through them. The others are just average Hollywood stock-actors; and so they don't GET Superman's character-motivation (or the director doeesn't); because they get it backwards: i.e. they disguise Clark Kent as Superman, rather than the other way around. So they try to make him a "groovy guy with glasses," not an actual awkward, introverted and meek person with real fears and insecurities, and who keeps his true potential hidden-- and so he is taken for granted, despite that he's plainly the same guy for all to see. And that's DISRESPECTING THE CHARACTER, by saying that the nerdy Clark Kent wasn't good enough, and so he ends up acting like Austin Powers with his "mojo." That's why there will NEVER be another Superman like Chris Reeve: he EMBRACED the full character of Superman, not just the "cool" side or the "dark" side of 2-dimensional sensationalism, but fleshed him out as a real person that the audience can relate as a person. So that's the difference: the others are flat and superficial, while Chris was fully-dimensional and had true depth and range-- i.e. "character motivation." The others just don't get it; rather, they just embrace the somber, depressive side of Superman, and end up turning him into BATMAN, like "Nostalgia Critic" parodies. THAT WAS NEVER THE INTENDED TONE OF SUPERMAN-- he lives in fucking METROPOLIS not Goth-damn City! And by day he's a MILD-MANNERED REPORTER, not a reclusive emo billionaire like Howard Hughes of Steve Jobs! See the difference? It's like comparing The Empire State Building to Notre Dame cathedral.
