Fun fact: Even though Christopher Reeve was tall enough for the role of Superman, he was very skinny. The director and producers wanted to put him in a bulky suit so he'd look more muscular. But Reeve insisted on actually looking like Superman. So he trained a lot in the gym by lifting weights and adding protein to his diet. He put on just enough muscle to actually fit into the Superman costume. The movie "Superman Returns" (2006) was made as a soft reboot of the Christopher Reeve movies taking "Superman" (1978), and to a lesser extent "Superman II" (1980), as cannon backstory for the movie. Brandon Routh was cast as Superman because of his resemblance Christopher Reeve, and supposedly studied Mr. Reeves portrayal so his own would be as close as possible to it. The plot and story of "Man of Steel" (2013) takes elements from both Superman and Superman II, excises Lex Luthor and his plot line, and squishes what is left into one movie. Christopher Reeve appeared in one movie prior to Superman, sixteen theatrical movies after Superman and before his accident. Mr. Reeve also appeared in sixteen made for T.V. movies, four of which were made after his accident. Prior to his accident Mr. Reeve appeared in eleven T.V. series, usually in only one episode as a guest star, and four more after his accident. Christopher Reeve made cameo appearances in two episodes of the "Smallville" T.V. series. If you wish to see more of him I would recommend "Somewhere in Time" (1980). From all accounts Christopher Reeve was an admirable man, as decent as his most famous dual role as Clark Kent and Superman. It seems unlikely that anyone could have been better cast.

My favorite part of this movie comes right after Superman first rescues Lois and the TV newswoman on the ground cries, "I, I cannot believe it, he--he CAUGHT her!" It chokes me up every time, and for me, everything after that seems anticlimactic in comparison.

Christopher Reeve didn't portray Superman. He embodied him. Everything that defines who Superman is, what he stands for. As you pointed out He saved the president and Air force one , right after he got a cat out of a tree. Nothing, no matter hiw small or corny was below him. Thats great writing, direction, and above all convincing the audience its real. This movie is great all around. Fantastic writing, directing and great, iconic acting from all involved. Nothing against all other Superman actors, and some people will love George Reeves more, or Cavil, Welling, Chris Reeve just WAS Superman. The way he walked, talked, flew. The way he didn't have to pose or act differently. He embodied the strength, power, but also the kindness and compassion. That alone makes his portrayal the best. But when you throw in his incredible role as Clark Kent it blows your mind. He actually was TWO DIFFERENT people. No one laughed at the whole " glasses only" disguise. It felt like two different people. When you get to part two you will see a scene where Superman is interviewed by Lois. They fly around the city in a very innuendo like way. Pay close attention to after Superman leaves and Clark shows up. There is a scene there where you will understand what seperates Reeve from everyone else.

He's easily the best. Christopher Reeve was great here, but also the filmmakers captured the character perfectly. The more recent attempts to make him more brooding and dark miss the point...his weakness isn't kryptonite, it's his ethics. He always does the right thing. Years ago I did some work for his charity, but unfortunately never had the opportunity to meet him.

The definitive Superman on the silver screen. The movie is of its time (the 70's) and you do feel it, which do make him a bit dated, but Christopher Reeves perfectly plays both sides (Clark and Superman) to perfection. As Clark he is lovable and bumbling but without feeling ridiculous, and as Superman he is a whole other person that exudes strength, authority and yet benevolence and concern. It's incredible how a pair of glasses and strong acting skills make a difference. To my humble opinion, he is the only movie Superman who is so convincing as both characters. For everyone who was born in the 70's and beyond, when hearing the fantastic John William score, only one Superman comes to mind (and ever will)... it's Christopher Reeves.

The reason this works so well is because it's a pure comic book. It's Superman, pure and simple.

Don't know if it was mentioned but the "Lois" on the train was Noel Neill. Lois Lane on the 50's TV show "Superman" Leave it to Beaver's dad, Hugh Beaumont, played an ex convict that was trying to get his life together but no one would let him but Clark. Episode "The Big Squeenze" Sept. 25 1953. Another one involving a sort of racism is about some creatures living underground that are being attacked because of how they looked. "Superman and the Mole Men" Heady stuff for a child.

The couple with the little girl on the train are played by Kirk Alyn and Noel Neil... the original Superman and Lois Lane from the 1940s serials... Neil actually went on to play Lois in the 1950s T.V. series as well as playing the elderly woman that Lex Luthor cons in Superman returns.

All good points about Christopher Reeve's look as Superman. I read the comics as a kid, and I can't believe how much Reeve looked exactly like the Superman in the comics. Also, he did work out to be more muscular than when he was doing soaps. But he has a nice look, not jacked so much as really nice in terms of build. Finally, I thought he was crazy handsome. Oh yes, and he did do the Clark Kent miem very well. People sometimes complain that Lois couldn't recognize Clark as Superman, but he was slumped over, talked with this nerdy voice, and his overall demeanor was very different from Superman. So you made all good points!

The best super hero movie ever. It is the embodiment of what intelligent writing, acting, and directing can do. Plus a John Williams musical score that is one of his best. I see this over and over again. One mistake the director made was to make the knowledge crystal green. Everybody thinks it's kryptonite, but it isn't; it's just green. But your thought is not unwarranted; it made sense because kryptonits IS green. The director maybe should've just made it glow a bright white, or something to distinguish it from the other glass crystals in Kal's transport ship shown at the beginning of the movie.

Christopher Reeve's performance as Clark Kent/Superman is undoubtedly great. Christopher Reeve immediately engrained himself into the public conscience, and is still to this day the definitive take on the character.

My chief memory - as a 6 year old - was of my older brother (he was 17) being utterly glued to the screen! And an intermission following Supes flying towards the camera in the fortress of solitude. What's worse than this old man recollection is seeing the poster for this film in the lobby of our local cinema... directly after seeing Star Wars....

One quirk of fate is that the Superman of the 1950s TV series Adventures of Superman was named George Reeves, this time with the "s." George was terrific in the role too and was severely typecast because of it. George's Lois Lane, Noel Neill, has a cameo in Superman the Motion Picture as I'm sure someone has already mentioned.

My impression is that Zod was originally a Cold War era character based on Stalin, except with no hair and no mustache. After this movie came out, as it so often happens, this bearded look became the iconic depiction of Zod. In his backstory, Zod tried to take over Krypton using a robot army (with all the robots looking like him), and once foiled, he was sentenced to the Phantom Zone. After that, Krypton is destroyed. Superman becomes aware of this and releases Zod from the Phantom Zone when his sentence is completed, but Zod hasn't reformed at all, and as a Kryptonian villain he was a match for Superman.

So great seeing someone react to this extended version of the film! This is the version I great up with when I recorded it off TV as a kid. They put in all the deletedmp scenes to pad out the run time so it would last 4 hours (with commercials) and they could divide it up and show it over two nights. The theatrical version always feels like there's too much missing (like they cut out the part where you found out the little girl on the train was Lois Lane) because I knew this version first. Perhaps, you were thinking of George Reeves who played Superman in the 50s TV show. Noel Neill who played Lois in the Reeves TV show and the film serials with Kirk Alyn is the woman reading on the train Clark runs past. The man with her is Kirk Alyn who was the first live action Superman.

Love it! I know it's hard to tell what's going on with General Zod's sentencing. They weren't really made flat. Kryptonian criminals are sentenced and transported into another dimension called the Phantom Zone where they lead a lonely existence as immaterial phantoms. On the plus side, they don't age there. That square that flew at them was a portal to the Phantom Zone. That green crystal wasn't Kryptonite. I don't know why they chose to make it green, because that makes everyone think it is. But Kryptonite was created when the planet exploded (radiation released in the explosion changed the rocky debris of the planet into Kryptonite). Since the crystal was shielded in Kal-El's rocket, it wasn't exposed to the radiation that changed the rest of the planet. Lois Lane's parents on the train are part of Superman history; the woman was Noelle Neill, who played Lois on the Superman TV series in the 50s as well as a couple of movie serials and her father was Kirk Alyn, who played Superman in those same serials. George Reeves, who played Superman against Noelle in the TV series, committed suicide long before this movie was filmed. There's actually a good movie about the mystery of his death (some think it wasn't suicide).

A couple of comments here. First, I love when Jonathan tells Clark, "You are here for a reason"...one of the best lines in the early part of the film. Gets me every time. Another thing is based on what Stan Lee once said. He said, "A lot of superheroes in their origins. Death had something to do with it." and it's true when you take a good hard look at some of the biggest characters in the comic book world. Batman, Spiderman, Superman, etc. There seems to be an on going pattern of loss so that the character's destiny can develop. Also, I'm glad a couple of guys cleared up the notion about the crystal being kryptonite in the comments.

Superman the Movie added a few things to the comic book mythology. The crystal from Krypton was not kryptonite. It was a crystal seed that grew a structure that is the Fortress of Solitude. Crystals do actually grow and Clark's crystal speeded up the process a few million times.

Kudos to you for watching the three hour cut! This cut was not approved by director Richard Donner and aired on broadcast TV! It took ABC two Weekend nights to fully air this cut because of commercials and the like. Can’t wait for part 2!

27:53 Time doesn’t move differently on Krypton. During baby Kal-El’s flight to Earth his pod was moving near the speed of light. Because of this time slowed to maybe 3-5 years for him inside the pod. But to the outside universe thousands of years would have passed. This concept is known as time dilation and actually can be measured with two identical atomic clocks. Leave one on Earth and put the other on a satellite in space orbiting at thousands of MPH. After a year if you check the time on both, the one from the satellite will be several fractions of a second behind the one on Earth.

It's so funny that when this movie was made, the conversation with his long dead father in which he could ask questions and get precise answers in real time seemed so far fetched. Now a few decades later we know exactly how to do this (Chat GPT). Just prop up a visual image that resembles the father, add a chat bot, and give it access to all the relevant information .

The green crystal in-question is called (in Superman lore) a Sun Crystal. Now these data crystals have had other names throughout the years, but they're essentially designed as onboard computers and storage devices for Kryptonians. It's been years since I read the script for this film but I'm fairly sure they still call it a Sun Crystal. In this film, Clark throws the Sun Crystal and it uses the surrounding rocks and ice to create the Fortress of Solitude in the same style as Kryptonian architecture, hinting that the buildings there are grown, something Superman Returns messed with in it's story. As to how it does the things it does in this film, you can probably chalk that up to Mario Puzo since he wrote the original script. edit: I had the blessing of meeting Christopher Reeve in 1999 during a stop of his Q&A tour and he truly was Superman. I cherish that memory and the fleeting moments I had to say hello to him before I moved on to let the next person greet him. I honestly miss him in a really personal way and I truly hope the next Superman embodies the spirit like Reeve.

Little Lois' mom on the train was Noell Neill. TVs Lois Lane for George Reeves as SUPERMAN. So see, you were subconsciously linking them together. SMALLVILLE was enjoyable. LOIS AND CLARK, surprisingly, is also enjoyable. Clark goes home to see Martha and Jonathan on weekends. She made his costume and he's worried about being recognized. She says, "Well, there's one thing for sure. Nobody's going to be looking at your face." Way to go, Mom!

Superman is very personal to me. I was about six when I would see this and its sequel on the weekly television movie night. They had those back then - e.g. the NBC Monday Night Movie. Kal-El’s sincerity, combined with extraordinary abilities, portrayed one of my earliest images of what a decent person is. I’d later learn that the comic books originally attributed his powers, and those of the Kryptonians, to having developed their mental and physical bodies through nature. As a Jew, I felt wonderful learning that two Jewish teenagers came up with Superman. The backstory matches the Moses story in the pentateuch. Moses’ sister puts him into a craft as a baby. This was to escape the death of their people. He is found by a motherly member of an alien culture and brought up as a member of this culture. He’s then between two cultures. Also, the meeting with his father in the white Fortress of Solitude reminds me of the burning bush and Moses communing with YHVH. I’d like to read into this that Kal-El’s inherent intelligence and strength come from through, despite being an alien, to help people. He embodies what we can be capable of if we put effort into it. I don’t think he is pretending to be a nerd. I think he feels awkward around people in a culture that doesn’t appreciate genuine-ness. He doesn’t see a need to use his strength to bully others, etc. I think this is why Lois doesn’t pay attention to him. This is why he acts the way he does.

Fun Facts: Jack O'Halloran who played "Non" in Richard Donner's *"SUPERMAN"* & *"SUPERMAN II"* (before Donner was replaced by Richard Lester) had previously played "Joe Perko" in Paramount's 1976 remake of *"KING KONG".* Susannah York who played "Lara Lor-Van" later starred in the 1984 TV adaptation of Charles Dickens' *"A Christmas Carol"* which also had Titanic actors George C. Scott & Roger Rees (1996) and David Warner (1979 & 1997), as well as Michael Gough from the *"BATMAN"* tetralogy in 1989-1997. Speaking of Titanic, "The 2nd Krypton Elder" was played by Harry Andrews who was "Captain E.J. Smith" in *"S.O.S. TITANIC"* (1979).

Even as far away as the UK the split between Clark Kent (who I was as nerd, even in childhood) and Superman (who we all wanted to be) was kind of encouraging. And perhaps that is part of the message of the film. You could be something.

"Superman Returns wasn't that bad" Indeed, sadly it came out with two big elements against it: one, the weight of the previous Superman films (and Christopher Reeve's performance, since it tried to be a sequel of these films) and the many failed attempts to make continuations of comic films at the time. Superman Returns came out in 2006, around the same year as X-Men: The Last Stand, Elektra, Fantastic Four (feautring Chris Evans), Ghost Rider and Spider-Man 3; and sandwiched between the darker Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Yep, it was a time when several comic adaptations didn't know what formula worked (for context: Iron Man wouldn't come out until 2008). "I keep saying Reeves, for some reason" While that's a honest mistake... you are not that "in the wrong" XD: before this film, the most popular adaptation of Superman was a black and white TV Series where Superman was played by George Reeves. "That's Kryptonite?" No, kryptonite are the mineral remains of planet Krypton that reached earth as meteorites; that can be described as a control crystal (the film really never gives an answer why it's green and not dark blue, to be more in tune with the character XD), but yeah: they are not adding radioactive or poisonus materials to the ship. In Man of Steel, they kind of addressed this isue and replaced control elements or keys with these sort of "graphite sticks" stamped with the symbol of the owner. "I didn't get that time moves differently in Krypton" Well, that (because "measuring time" is a human concept, so every race can measure it the way they want), but also time moves differently in space, moving at high speeds (the concept is part of the Theory of Relativity and is called "Time Dilation" and, fun fact, you are a victim of it each time you move faster than others, like in a plane: by mere miliseconds, your clock ticks faster or slower based on the relative speed you move from others and others move around you). Yes, Kal-El experienced a trip of some years (more less), but if his ship was travelling at the speed of light (or very nearly), time inside the ship actually ticks slower than observers outside. So yeah, by the time he gets to earth his "some years" translate to thousands of our years, depending on the distance between Krypton and Earth (by the time the film was made, there was no canon in the comics on where Krypton was located, so yeah... Krypton pretty much is a "land far, far away"). "I like the meditating aspect of becoming Superman..." Indeed... and that's why several people didn't like Man of Steel. Don't get me wrong, I like the film; but yeah: Superman always was meant to be the "bright ideal", the aspiration of what humanity (as individuals and as a collective) can be. Man of Steel, though, tried to make Superman darker and grittier after the success of the more realistical modern Batman adaptations (and that's why you get an over the top Jonathan Kent's death in a tornado). Superman could be darker or face with the more ambiguous moreality of our times? Yes, but the spirit of the character is to always come out as the best version of us... and that's where Man of Steel detoured a lot (focusing more in the burden of his powers and character and the neverending emotional toll it takes; that's why even the Man of Steel Jor-El feels like a tragic figure, and not that much of a guide XD). Choices where made (oh, and one of those choices was, precisely, skip all the "forming years" to save time and get right into the action, because we are no longer used to films being almost three hours long). Also, Superman crashing in a mountain on his first flight is a nice touch... but when you consider that the time he spent with Jor-El was to master all his powers, in a safe environment, you see why you can't have that scene in this film (Jor-El doesn't release Superman into the world without the basics covered; while in Man of Steel, Jor-El didn't cover much of the flying manual, for what it seems XD). Again, choices were made (and some tried to tone down Superman from being just "too perfectly adjusted" to his powers). "How Clark looks so natural as a nerd?" Kudos to Christopher Reeve, who nailed the character, because it takes a good actor to make that awkardness work without looking forced (and kudos to Brandon Routh, because you have to keep in mind he is playing a continuation of this exact same character and nailed many of the mannerisms, he basically had to copy Reeve's acting style). As time went on, though, they tuned down Clark's "nerdness" to make him more socially capable (making more unbelievable that no one notices he is Superman in the process). It's not a bad choice, as such... but yeah, some charm was lost by tuning down what the character does. "That cop looks like a security guard" That's, actually, the New York City police uniform of the 1970's (the police cars are also the standard livery of NYPD of that time). Which makes sense, New York is doubling as Metropolis in this film and safety and uniforms were something very different back then. And that would be it, for now. See you in the next part.

In a superhero-saturated film industry, it's difficult to imagine a time when it just didn't exist on the big screen. The character - even across the pond in the UK - was as familiar as Santa Claus. As one commentator put it, it was (in American terms) the equivalent of making 'Coca-Cola: The Movie' and I still think the fact it was made in the 1970s is what gave it unexpected depth. Spielberg, no less, hassled the producers to be allowed to direct this movie. He could not have made a better job. And the reason is probably explained by Richard Donner's buzzword on this picture: 'verisimilitude'. It must seem 'real'....

Superman's first flight here was back in the fortress of solitude after listening to the hologram speech from his father Jor-El.

A really great movie. A Superman movie with the gold standard of Superman Christopher Reeve may he rest in peace. This movie is the first modern superhero movie the one that started the all modern super hero movie genre and Superman is my all time favorite super hero.

Great reaction. Just FYI the version you saw is the extended TV cut which was put together by the producers because they got paid per minute running time, so they put in every frame which was shot. This version was NOT approved by the director as it included too many unnecessary footage. The Directors version runs 151 minutes and is also available. If you watch Superman II make sure you also watch the Directors Cut afterwards which is known as the Donner Cut and is considered widely to be superior to the theatrical version. Cheers.

George REEVES was Superman in the Adventures of Superman from the 1950’s. Christopher REEVE was this Superman-THE Superman in my view. Also, the green crystal his father gave him is totally different than green Kryptonite which are radioactive “chunks” or dust from the planet after it exploded.

He walked from Kansas to the Artic Circle ..the North Pole to create the Fortess of Solitude the home base of Superman on Earth and a piece of his former home.

When you watch Smallville, you will enjoy. The whole series is about Clark's coming of age story

Well the reason being is that the story of Superman have been told countless numbers of times and some of the story have been ommited because most people is familiar with it. The newer generation is starting to get 'refamiliar' with the character. Maybe a director will include it with the next movie...who knows?

Oh gosh, it looks like you may be watching the SUPER expanded version that was done especially for airing on ABC TV. The theatrical version is much shorter than this. The producers basically went back and added a whole bunch of of footage that was cut by director Richard Donner. This was to make a two-part, four hour version (with commercials) to air over two nights. The theatrical has MUCH better pacing! About the green crystal...yeah, I think they screwed up when they made Jor-El's education crystal green, I'm sure many people thought it was actually Kryptonite...which of course actually does make an appearance later in the film. Something Reeves embodies, that no other actor has captured, is that both Clark and Superman are disguises, and only Kal-El is real. One was developed to survive on Earth and the other is a paragon of virtue, but both are facades that Kal must keep up unless he is alone. There is a tragedy in the loneliness of Superman, a God trapped among mortals, that never really gets delved into in the movies.

I'm kind of jaded on what superman is supposed to represent. So I tend not to like these movies. But I can acknowledge that this is probably the most complete portrayal.

The first two Superman movies were originally supposed to be one long movie, that might have been why so much time was spent on his early years. It wasn't all that much time for what was likely a 4 hour movie.

1st time on your channel, mostly because you are reacting to SUPERMAN lol. So glad you are liking it and appreciating it. That warms my heart. I saw this movie in the theater in 1978 I believe, with my father and, oh boy was it a huge event for everyone, because it was not only the first time to see Superman in the cinema, but also the first time to see ANY major superhero in the cinema! My father was super excited because they got Marlon Brando and Glen Ford (Superman's 'Earth dad') to be in the movie, which was big news as they were icon actors already. The version you are watching is longer than the one I saw in the theater, so that's kinda cool too, as there's short bonus scenes here. It's not even close. No other who had worn the cape has had the same charisma and presence in the role that Christopher Reeve had. That's why he's seen as the GOAT Superman.

I never noticed that it takes over 50 minutes to actually get to Superman. I usually HATE when movies do that, but I guess I've just not noticed the movies that have done it right! - Because I just thought about it. This film is so entertaining while you're waiting for Supes that the waiting isn't even slightly a bother.

You caught that it was Reeve in the credits, but then said "Reeves" in your reaction and wrote it in the description. George Reeves played him in the TV show.

This is the extended cut, and it's generally inferior to the original theatrical version. Most of the "restored footage" was edited for a reason, in 1978.

Christopher Reeve's physique always seemed more realistic to me. Muscle mass is built up by resistance and weight training. There's literally nothing on Earth that can strain Superman's muscles enough to need to build mass. The Henry Cavill wall of muscle looks too jacked.
