Great man. He protected his father’s legacy like no one else could have. He will be missed greatly. Rest In Peace Christopher Tolkien

There was no pressing need to sort out his father's papers for publication. He could have just given them to the mathom-house, but he chose to take on the immense task of publishing them with commentary. We're in debt to Christopher for the work he has done to edit and publish the history of his father's extraordinary work. For which he has devoted his lifetime.

Very very true. There is also the fact that some of his father's work simply was too all over the place and would never ever have been published, had he not done this incredibly long work. I adore Christopher as a man, but his work, what he's done, everyone should respect him for that.

Godspeed, Christopher Tolkien. :( His literary life's opened up the vastness of his father's work for millions of people to enjoy, and the care and the love with which he prepared that material will leave many of us forever in debt.

“There he stood far into the night, hearing only the sigh and murmur of waves on the shores of Middle-earth, and the sound of them sank deep into his heart." Perhaps my favourite sentence in the whole book.

A worthy, poignant choice. And Christopher says it with such gentle sorrow here. Very beautiful.

Well, here at last, dear friends, on the shores of the sea comes the end of our fellowship in Middle-earth. Go in peace! I will not say: do not weep for not all tears are an evil. Namárië Christopher

"Out of doubt, out of dark, to the day's rising he rode singing in the sun, sword unsheathing. Hope he rekindled, and in hope he ended; over death, over dread, over doom lifted out of loss, out of life, unto long glory."

It couldn't have been the "last ship", because there was also the ship that carried Legolas and Gimli to Aman much later.

It was a ship they built themselves. It’s likely the Grey Havens was empty by then.
