Filmed in Bob Dylan's trailer while he was working on the Hollywood movie HEARTS OF FIRE, in which Dylan played a retired rocker called Billy Parker. This clip is part of a BBC 'Omnibus' documentary called 'Getting to Dylan' (1987)

I used to work in a bar in Georgetown, DC. Dylan would come in every once in a while. We all agreed not to bother him in any way-no questions, no fan stuff. He ended up telling some really funny jokes and getting to know our bartenders quite well. A great guy, if treated like a real one.

That's really interesting. My brother and sister wemt to G.U. from the early '70s to about 1980. I'd hang around when I didn't have a high school day. You know, back around when they were shooting The Exorcist around the campus. I got some good stories from students who were being used as extras. What bar did you work at?
@nothenryporter81

Wow. May I ask when this was and what bar? I worked in Georgetown back in the late 90s (at the now closed Houston's) and was a regular on the bar scene. I also had the privilege of getting to know the infamous restaurateur Mad Max at Chez Nous and Paris Bisou, both places that I imagine Bob would have felt at home.

Study the man closely. Dylan was and forever will be an epic douche. Listen to genius Mike Bloomfield interview from like, 1974. He cuts through and nails it better than anyone ever. If he has a bodyguard on duty, you will be halted and asked to forget about it. Even if you are a beautiful, sincere, young lady, you will have to find an intriguing way to peak his curiosity other than just walking toward him. It's like a war for control - whose ego is going to be at the helm of this encounter. Who cares where it's all going, just so long as the other guy isn't in charge - or, as you suggest, the one drawing the final conclusions, which is a kind of mental control. When it comes down to it, it's all just typical primitive male territorial jousting for position. Bob likes to conceal what he's doing though, because allowing it to be too obvious would make him look too much like an ordinary man. But basically, he keeps wrong-footing his opponent, in subtle ways, to keep him weak. Donald Trump plays these kinds of power games too, but in his case it's done very crudely, without any attempt to mask it.

Bob definitely doesn't make it easy on the interviewers, ever, but I think the ones who really get into trouble are the ones who seem to be trying to show how intelligent or insightful they are with the questions they ask. The longer, more winding the question, the gruffer Bob's answers get.

Jack Murphy I’m pretty sure Dylan is a bit of an Aspie...( Aspergers Autism Spectrum) and that is very uncomfortable with being interviewed or anything formal,he particularly hates being alluded to being a genius or Shaman etc...as you mention too...it must have been so tricky for Dylan to understand what it was these people wanted! My husband and my son are both Hugh functioning Apies and prefer information or questions to be logical and preferably short,so that they can break down and process that information before answering....both of them were and are in IT information Technology. They can be totally overwhelmed by too many questions or complex situations,I think it’s the same for Dylan.

I love the way Bob royally fucks with journalists who go in thinking they *know*, like they stayed up til' 4am pouring over Blonde on Blonde and came away some great, profound insight that *must* be right, and think they're the first person to tell Bob he does something in *this* way, and this bit must be significant because of *this* reason and how do you write a song, Bob? I think it's hilarious that people keep doing this shit after that Beatnik looking fellow (probably the Zodiac Killer) went on about album covers and motorcycles or some shit in that San Francisco press conference.

I don't think a lot of journalists understand the way musician's, poets, etc create art. You can't ask him questions like, "Where do your songs come from?" I mean, you either have it or you don't. Either you're creative or you're not. You can't expect Dylan to answer that.
@p.augustvaino5039
@p.augustvaino5039 6 жыл бұрын
But if the interviewer frames the question as such: "What inspired you to write [artwork's name]?", then this question could be easily answered. When it comes to Bob Dylan, it's more about his willingness to answer, because it gives power to the interviewer to steer the conversation. And as he said in this video, he isn't too keen on being pupperteered.

I love how the interviewer gives Bob a rather long winded theory of how he thinks he may have written All Along The Watchtower and finishing up says "I suppose what I want to know is when you write a song am I right about you doing it like that?" Bob: No. lol

I know what you mean. It seems like Dylan is more interested in the drawing and barely listening to this guy's inane questions.

The most notable thing about this painful 'interview', is that Bob, is, by and large, pretty much the same guy he was in the 1965 press conference he gave, 21 years before. Sure, he's more self assured in this, wiser by far - like anyone would hope to be - but there's nothing mysterious here. He's Bob. He was Bob back then, he's Bob here. What we have is a man with exceptional talents and an aura & charisma of epic proportions - he just exudes it. Was born with it. Doesn't question it - why? Sure, it helps he's smart as a whip, but so are many humans. I just get the overriding impression that it is exactly - and I mean *exactly* as he tells it - he really doesn't know why there's all this fixation about what he does - and what's so odd about that? It's totally human. And so is he. It must get so damn annoying having people fawning all over you, trying to read into every damn word, when all you really are is just another human trying to have a good time, trying to create some cool stuff ... but, how the heck do you equate that with how the media has reacted, how people have reacted? All I can say, is he is a very level headed and grounded guy to be able to take this onboard - but heck, by accounts, he got wounded by it. Wounded pretty bad. Some nasty nasty fuckers are out there in this world. All I can say is he has given us some great music - he has used the talents he was given to the upmost of his ability, why do we need to know anymore than that?

@@ChristopherSykesDocumentaries Thanks. I am constantly amazed by what humans can do when they pass that barrier we know as complacency. I never managed it myself, probably never will - most of us don't. I still continuously question, seek out answers and on the rare occasion may come close to what I could be. But damn, the sheer amazement I get from people who have actually done that - pushed the boat out, burned that candle from both ends, I can exist on just that...

He looked very servere with eyeliner...I've loved this guy for 33 years and seen him try to field such ridiculous and unanswerable questions from so many interviewers and generally he comes off as rude and uninterested - I don't think it's always the case, I think he reacts directly to the depth and significance of the questions he's being asked, which are generally vague and unanswerable - great clip 🔥

He is getting so close to the TRUTH in his interviews, which makes some people very uncomfortable, especially if they are hiding from the TRUTH all their life. Rarely the opponent is on the same level of consciousness. And we can enjoy real conversation between two equally intelligent human beings.

It always baffles me when interviews go like this. Start slow. Ask the man how his day or week is going. See if he’s in good health. Starting with broad cliches clearly annoyed an already annoyed man.
