You don’t have to justify your choices, but as you did, and from a guy who uses Fuji and Canon, I couldn’t understand your reasoning, it’s like “I have a extremely good reliable system to do my job, but I need some more complications in my life, so I’m switching from full-frame to a smaller sensor, worse AF system, worse ISO and worse depth of field, but I got them for free” . I mean, I use Fuji all the time, but when it comes to professional jobs I rely on my full-frame Canon R system. And I don't mind using Fuji for pro work, it's just that you already had a better system and you are downgrading because you made a deal, if you had to pay for this new gear you wouldn't be switching and that's sad.
@ChrisTurnerPhotographer
@ChrisTurnerPhotographer 2 ай бұрын
I’ll explain this here and pin the comment so others might get it. Firstly. We approached Fuji. We were going to switch anyway. The fact we got a deal just made it better for us. Secondly I’m not sure why people are so “focused” on Fujis focus system. It’s much faster and more accurate than the D750 was and that was a staple for many pros up until 5-6 years ago so what makes the Fuji so unusable? Depth of field is over rated and something photographers hide behind at the start of their careers. You shouldn’t need 1.2 on a full frame to make a good photo. Worse ISO, sure, marginally and the noise looks better. The fact is I prefer how the final image looks with Fuji, the colours are nicer to me, and most importantly I enjoy using the system. This is my job. I’m not a builder (anymore) I’m a photographer. And if I enjoy using the gear I’m more inspired to make better images.

@@ChrisTurnerPhotographer Great comment. I'm coming back to photography as a hobbyist after 7/8 years. I back to backed an A7iv and X-H2. The Sony AF is better, but I had more fun with the Fuji, so that's the one I bought. Is the Sony a better camera? For some. Is the Fuji terrible? Not by a mile. The lenses are a touch smaller and lighter, and I don't need the 'advantage' of FF DoF (or lack thereof). In fact, I don't want a razor thin DoF because I don't want my subject's eye to be in focus but not the end of their nose. To each their own, and if Fuji works for you, that's all that matters.👍

For someone who uses both Leica and Fuji for my client on tour and press photos and album covers. I would say 75% of the images I took with my Fuji have been keepers in my clients eyes. He always wants the Fuji files as the images look more pleasing to him. So in 2024 with all the new generation being able to create wonderful images without it being full frame or using strictly film on projects and on set. I would say that the whole full frame thing is a thing of the past or if your like in your late 30s because to be quit honest if your letter a computer do all the work for you then your not really a photographer. Every camera from the past 10 years can get the job done. With that said ! Shoot with what works for you, if you relie and ai autofocus and all you do is press the shutter and the camera does all the work for you then that’s cool too, but there’s b people who are professional and use zone focusing and gets paid lots of money for what they client wants not what you want 😊

I recently switched from a Sony a7r iii to a Fuji x100vi, and WOW - I feel like finally my photos actually have character and vibe. The Sony photos might have been technically “better” - being sharper etc, but I very rarely was fully happy with the outputs that I got, somehow I could never capture how I felt in a location with the Sony - it’s hard to explain. With the x100vi I feel like every single time I use the camera it really captures into the images the feeling that I want to tell

I totally understand what you mean. I also own a A7Riii and it's amazing, but my issue with it is I can't get the colors the way I want them to look. I used a Fuji GFX50S II for one week and I was amazed by the colors it produced. Next week I'll be renting a Fujifilm XT5 and that may lead to a switch from Sony to Fujifilm.

I recently got an X-T5 after my heart surgery to deal with the weight limitations for my recovery period. And I have to say I agree with everything you've said - the A7R V is just too easy and I'm really enjoying the X-T5. At the moment I'm using both systems but I'm tempted to make the switch completely.

I don't know if it's the work that I do, or maybe I'm burned out, but recently, i dusted off the x100 (1st gen) and have been loving it. I did the same about a year ago, was a "lifetime" sony shooter (came from old alpha system, f828, r1) sold them all. When friend of mine borrowed me his x-t4 before his selling it. I had his camera for two weeks and I couldn't put it down. Want to shoot again. With the sony only used when had weddings. So ended up buying it and started to build my fuji system. I recommend to try Capture One istead of Lightroom. Much better with fuji files.

That’s why I bought an X-H2. Knew I’d never really change the dials on the top that much being an aperture priority shooter, so valued the seven custom positions on the PASM dial and top screen instead. Also prefer the grip of the X-H2, and by the time you’ve added one to the XT-5 a lot of the weight saving has gone. Still love the look of the X-T5 though!

I would highly recommend not selling off your Sony gear until you have used your fuji gear for a few months at least. Single point AF is great, colour is great, noise is no longer an issue with DXO Pure Raw 3/4. AF tracking is terrible and will fail you every time. I have switch to fuji and then back again to my canon full frame gear as it's just too unreliable when shooting weddings with Fuji. I miss fuji colours and wish Canon would take a leaf out of Fujis book. I love Fuji bodies, I love their lenses. It's such a shame that AF tracking is absolutely shocking.

Interesting approach that you sell your Sony gear to make things more difficult for yourself. For the opposite reason, I sold my Fuji gear and switched to Sony. The fact that the Fujis completely fail in AF-C when couples move and are closer than 2m really annoyed me. AF-S, however, works really well. And yes, the shutter of the A7 IV is so loud that I wonder from which 70s movie camera they stole the construction. :D

Switched from Canon to Fuji and now Sony. In critical focus situations (like a low light church with a couple statues in the background), I couldn’t trust the focus. Was skipping all over the place. At that point it wasn’t worth it to me and went to Sony. Also I found at the end of the day, the ergonomics (focus selector and back button) made my hand cramp up. 🤷‍♂️

As a long time fuji user in a professional setting the fuji system can be frustrating, tracking doesn't work in the same way (and i'm being polite) so certainly wouldn't rely on it like you could Sony and canon but zone is pretty constant. And to be honest would argue for weddings do you need more than that and im shooting 98% on single point on any brand but I digress. I see some have mentioned sensor size and noise, sure there's a bit more about stop but nothing to write home about and with the Denoise functions in Lightroom I can easily make 12,800 look base ISO. I'd stay away from the latest firmware as well there a bit of bug in system unless it seems if its factory installed so maybe there is an install problem. But if you can work round these, the look is without compare, and I built my brand up around this look

My XT5 had issues with firmware updates prior to v4 firmware, I installed v4 in the hope it would rectify the problems I was experiencing. To my horror it made it unusable, I mostly do bird/wild life photography, bird detection stopped working 100% even AF-C without using detection was not working properly, I couldn’t use the camera at all and with no firmware update In sight, or the guarantee that the next firmware update would resolve the problem I was left weighing up my options. If I wanted a working camera I either wait months or buy a new one, I ended up buying a Sony. Leaving Fujifilm was not an easy choice as I had invested so much money in the system but when repeated firmware updates make your device worse than the last eventually making it unusable I had no choice.

Seeing this video I felt like you inspired me so much, that I started thinking like you and made the same changes without knowing you would do this. I actually feel the same way about the Sonys, they’re so good at what they do for weddings, but don’t inspire me to pick them up away from that. I sold ALL of my Fuji gear including my X100V which I loved, and eventually ended up with a Leica Q2 which I absolutely loved. I sold that and got tempted back to Fuji with the new X100Vi and realised I’d made a massive mistake- I sold that and did what I should have done in the first place, get a Q3. The Q3 is for me, and inspires me to shoot all the time, and has actually started to come to weddings now as well- so I get what you mean about the Sonys. However I wouldn’t ever go back to Fuji again- I am interested to see how you get on with them so will follow along!

Thank you for your transparency. I'm looking forward to the full review of the X-T5 regarding dynamic range and photovideo hybrid shooting. Also a comparison with the a7IV would be great. What bothers me about Fuji at the moment is that they charge almost similar prices for APSC as for fullframe (bodies and lenses). You always ask yourself why you shouldn't go straight to FF, especially as the bodies and lenses there are also getting smaller in terms of size and weight. Somehow Fuji has a size mania, but a FF from Fuji would be nice (no interest in medium format). I currently shoot with a FF and have a small X-E1 as a fun camera, pretty much quenched my thirst for a complete switch to Fuji. Try the X-E1 while it's still cheap, a cool camera with amazingly precise AF and nostalgic feel. My old A7 III missed focus more often than this old APSC.

Like you already explained learning and knowing which AF settings to use that works best is part of the Journey. I found similar results with the wider lenses your best using a medium size single point but with the longer lenses especially the new 56 mk2 & 90 the eye AF actually works pretty good.

I would have stayed with Fuji if the X-T5 and the X-H2 had been one and only camera. Instead, I decided to make a big plunge and purchased the Sony A7RV when it was released, and a couple of lenses. Lazy me loves to shoot in auto mode sometimes and I am really pleased with whatever comes out of camera. Quite impressive. I am 70 now, have shaky hands and failing eyesight. The Sony autofocus is so $#%@ awesome that I can't imagine myself using another system. If ever Fuji comes out with an X-T6 with a good autofocus and the possibility to attach a battery grip, I'm in. I'd keep my Sony gear, though. It is that good!

Ultimately, Sony is too good, and when it comes down to the product "image", I always end up with Sony because - even if I'm a little less keen on picking it up than my Q3 - I end up with more good pictures when I pack my A9ii than with all my other attempts! May I suggest you use Capture One for your XT files as they handle the X-trans sensor so much better than LR. My standard sharpening in Capture One is 180 percent at 0.8 pixels and the images are outstanding. LR is fine for Beyer sensors, but get all mushy with X-trans sensors even with their newest updates. It is literally like night and day. In fact I was ready to sell all of my Fuji gear and discovered Capture One for Fujifilm and it was a 180° turn around. I own 10 Fujifilm bodies that include 3 x GFX's and 30 Fuji lenses. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed. Being that the GFX sensors are not X-trans, you may use LR with no problem.

I think that Fuji (in Europe) is too expensive for being an APSC Camera ! I think that the X-T5 EVF has too low resolution, the X-H2 have a ok EVF. The Sony sensor in the Fuji Cameras are great though and I do not understand why Sony do not use the 40 megapixels sensor in Sony APSC Cameras !? I do a lot of Landscape photography, so for that the APSC sensor is too small for me and the Fuji GFX series are too big and expensive, so I am very happy with 61 megapixels full frame Cameras, I need the extra pixels and dynamic range.

I love fujifilm..yes it can be tricky but not impossible for auto focussing. Fujifilm Australia are great to work with. I love the colours. Also for auto focus pick 1 eye. Adjust to sensitivity to meduim. I found the dynamic range 😎 on the xt5 ...I love the skin tones on the xt5 too. I've shot about 5 weddings with my XT5 yes flash is easy to use. L bracket a must.

I made the same switch about 2 years ago and only miss the cheat-code-like eye af from my Sony a74 and a7r3. The overall rendering of my Fuji cameras is much nicer than my former sonys but I wish Fuji could update some more lenses like the compact f2 fujicrons. The af motors are ancient particularly for video.

I preferred your photos taken with the Sony. The full-frame sensor has a shallower depth of field and more pleasing bokeh, which the Fuji images lack due to the smaller sensor.

Funny, apparently I use AF (tracking) and aperture priority on my Sonys exactly the way you do. Super reliable, super convenient. I find myself craving an X100, but I have an A7C and A7C II which strike a pretty good middle ground for me. Just last weekend at a music festival I got to hold an X-T20 (I think) and didn’t like it as much as I thought I would. One of the other videographers was walking around with an X100 around his neck though and MAN I got jealous. :D

Been following you for some time, shocking for you to jump ship to Fuji. You made a video some time ago saying you didn’t like the files that were coming out of the Fuji and they weren’t as clear as Sony. I love the gfx System but for engagement sessions. For weddings it’s a bit tougher to use but probably can be used certain shots.

I switched from Sony to fujifilm in 2021. Best decision I ever made. Sonys are amazing but had no life or character to them. I bought a cheap XT-1 and immediately fell back in love with photography again. Ended up selling my Sony gear and haven’t looked back.

Great perspective and I get the perspective of finding gear that inspires and makes you want to take pictures. Curious though, did you try the A7C II or A7CR? For me they provide a totally different experience than the A7 IV type bodies, somewhat similar to the Fuji cameras.

Hi Chris, I found your channel - and your video 1 month ago - praising the Sony A7iv - which made me full good about my recent decision to ditch the Fuji XT5 which I bought recently. After a lot of careful thought I felt I could not justify running two systems. While I much prefer the design and handling of the XT5 - the miss rate on autofocus bothered me. The Sony is just in a different league. Also, full frame, dynamic range and the Sony 33mp sensor are very hard to beat. That said I did like the viewfinder on the XT5, the Fuji App which allows wireless transfer of RAW files and a other features + the enthusiasm people seem to have for the Fuji which, as you say, encourages them to use the camera and love it, whereas the Sony is more of a tool. A professional tool - but a tool nonetheless. So in conclusion , after watching your earlier video which made me feel good about my decision to choose Sony over Fuji, your decision to go the other way has given me pause for yet more thought. I’ll be watching your progress with the XT5, and it’ll be interesting to see if you like other Pros I have seen decide the autofocus is too unreliable for your needs.

Hey hey, I just stumbled across your video and would like to share a few thoughts about it. Basically nice video but it might be misleading for some people. I am a Fuji user, have an XH2s and an XH2 and am fully into the Fuji system. And yes, Fuji is fun, Fuji has character. And now comes the big BUT: after more than 1.5 years with Fuji and the current status of their software, I can only advise against using Fuji for professional work. The more I personally get into more professional work in my hobby, I notice how often the XH2s (flagship) let me down. Of course the pictures look good, but the waste that the camera currently produces because of its poor AF (due to the software) is immense. Sure, if I just take a few photos here and there or take photos of landscapes or something similar, that's okay. But as soon as some movement comes into play, this (XH2s) camera starts to sweat despite its stacked sensor. Which is really sad and there are shots that have to be right. (Weddings are the first thing that comes to mind.) And before all the Fujifanboys come out of the woodwork again: Yes, I can use my camera and yes, I have dealt with the AF system and the various settings, don't worry. The latest software updates in particular have really not done the camera any good. The camera is currently tricking you by saying: Hey, the green box is on your model's eye, you pull the trigger, but then you see in Lightroom that it wasn't her eye but her nose, ear or forehead that was/is in focus. And this is not on 1 or 2 fotos. Mostly 50% are off. Something like that in 2024 is no longer up to date and the competition is simply better. That's a shame, I love my Fujis, but I notice that the XH2s in particular are letting me down more and more. Also when it comes to animal photography. Sitting duck in the grass, duck had its head high above the grass, no chance of getting a picture with a focused eye, currently due to the "faulty" software that came with 6.0. For "normal" and street photography, Fuji is cool and reliable thanks to all the film simulations, but currently you can't recommend it for professional work, at least not until Fuji has done their homework on the software. As I said, this isn't Fuji hate, it's just an experience report from someone who has been working with the system for almost 2 years.

I don’t know how that makes my video misleading. My video is my own opinion and experience. I don’t get as many missed shots as what you’re getting, I don’t know what the reason for that is. But either way this is just a video about my own reasons for switching

The subject tracking is the only thing that’s busted. Af-s and Af-c are totally fine. But let’s face it that’s a big deal for a lot of people. That said if you focus recompose it’s all good.

I switched from Fuji to Sony..dynamic range especially in shadows is a different as day and night, Fuji yes but only GFx or x100vi for fun..i have still the x100vi and dynamic range difference to Sony is so big..not way back to APS-C. Autofokus not to mention Fuji is still bad in this area if you need fast Autofocus, also the size for aquivalent lenses is smaller on Sony lenses

You should never have to justify why you’re switching to another camera brand. The haters are always going to hate! I started off as a canon shooter. It’s an amazing system and the glass is incredible. I have also shot Sony, Fuji, and most recently Panasonic micro 4/3 for birding. I won’t lie the Panasonic g9 ii paired with the 100-400 mark ii for birding is mind blowing! But I need to always have a Fuji camera and lenses. The Fuji system just makes me want to shoot!! The colors strait out of camera and the character of the photos just can’t be beat! The autofocus has come along way and the lenses are all amazing and affordable. The best camera is the one that makes you want to pick it up and shoot! Great video!! Congrats on your switch! Happy shooting!

That's true. My last experience with Fuji was the X100V and the tracking was just not acceptable compared to any Sony. It's a hard thing to pass up once you're used to it, especially in a professional (wedding) context. Plus I can't do crop sensors 😂 I don't think there's much size/weight difference either if you compare 1.4 Fuji glass to f/2 Sony glass, which is the more apples to apples comparison.

Surely sponsored or not sponsored you have disclosed this, which is honest, now as much i love sony and canon, I am a lumix/panasonic shooter, i dont need fast AF, i learnt to deal with focus racking when on commercial jobs etc, it all depends on the user experience, you can sony or now fujifilm and i feel people should focus more of the user and experience rather than the gear/label you use, :) in fact i get bombarded by sony ego users most of the time, who say it is the best system, (BUT never tried or know how to use canon or sony) ive used so many systems which to me means i am educated, I know your from Auckland, also the one of the founders for the collective, but i can definitely just say cameras are like cars, why will it matter what car you drive, as long as it gets you to a to b, or gets you to where you need to be, sometimes a change is always a good thing, it is how we GROW, never get comfortable always Learn :) great video Chris

The crappy tracking performance is my main reason for leaving Fujifilm these days. Being forced to find workarounds is no inspiration, removing the AF bugs in the firmware would be the better way. Sonys lens development (including Sigma) is great, while Fujifilm needs 10 years or longer to update an old lens. They haven't released any relevant XF prime lenses in the last two years. There's not a single fast and silent focusing lens in the range 40-80mm. Wish you a good time - without a camera freezing ... ;-)

Nope, it’s not even near. I shoot fuji for couple years. X-T3, X-T4, X-H2S - Fuji is tricking you with green box on the Eye and you check later photos and the focus is somewhere else… check tests from Edvard or Lamtongue - even old A6000 has better accuracy. Fuji has also other problems. IBIS in wideo panning is useless, when you zoom in most lenses you get exposure change in wideo. Almost no true parafocal lenses etc… So if you need video camera with great codecs and manual focus go with Fuji.

@@ChrisTurnerPhotographer because it is what they paid for. If Fuji reviews are claiming that autofocus of X-H2S is on par with Sony, Canon for some people this is important for their job. Fuji screwed up their autofocus on over 2k $ camera because of bad testing and lack of quality check. Some people made purchasing decisions based on initial reviews for some this is useless product because it doesn’t work as it supposed to.
