Three weeks ago i was about to purchase a chromebook. Before i did i came across an article about Dex and since i had a note 9 i decided to give it a shot. My wife and daughter have chromebooks so I'm quite familiar with it but Dex really suprised me. I use Microsoft Word and Excel for work and i feel they work better on Dex than Google's docs and spreadsheets (on Dex that is). As for the updates, Samsung has the latest security update (September 2018) and if you're talking about Andriod version, I really dont think it is that big a deal. Samsung has had features long before stock Andriod gets them (splitscreen, picture in picture, etc.) so in a way i think they are somewhat ahead of stock Andriod. Still, I like chrome os and agree it may be more secure but for now i'll save my $500 i was about to spend on a chromebook and maybe next year i'll jump at the chance to own one. If its light work you're currently doing and you currently have the latest or last years galaxy s phone, give dex a try.

Both Dex and Chromebooks are great. Use whatever you think is the right choice for you. Although your comment doesn't make so much sense regarding compatibility with Microsoft Office. If you are using MS office on Dex, you can also just use that on never Chromebooks that has Android support. It's the same app. Regarding Google Docs, it isn't that good with MS Office files. But that has nothing to do with Dex or Chromebooks. On Chromebooks Google Docs is generally much better to use in the browser, than the app you have on Dex/Android.

@@Jimmy_Jones yeah I did notice that DeX was certainly limited out of the box. BUT it does all of the things a normal person would need it to do. Being able to get intricate key binds and more settings is probably what DeX most needs. As far as RAM management goes, I have 8 gigs of it on my 512 GB note 9 and I have zero issues, with 5+ things open at the same time. But then again I have a note 9, for the 4gb and 6gb Samsung variants I would imagine it's a bit more limited.

Regarding your DeX complaints @ 4:50 - Samsung Internet has extensions (nowhere near as many as the Desktop Chrome) and it works miles better in DeX than Chrome. - Samsung Internet is regularly updated. Chrome OS is merely the Chrome browser getting updates, and it's not even gonna keep updating after google stops supportingthe hardware. - Regarding the calendar, simply use Samsung's feature-packed Calendar app and sync google Calendar to it. - Regarding IDE, check out Linux on Galaxy, it's part of the future of DeX. And BTW, you'll also be able to run the full Fledged Desktop Chrome in there, literally giving you every advantage of Chrome OS.

Remember when and who introduced split-screen in Android now that is baked in Android OS. Samsung is introducing features which is way ahead of the stock Android, and soon enough, stock Android follows and catches up. DeX has just started last year, and yet now it is even comparable to ChromeOS which is supposed to be a more mature OS.

@hukeskypotter5149
@hukeskypotter5149 5 жыл бұрын
It's the other way around, Samsung always overshoots Google by shipping half-baked features which they enable in their fork, they once shipped a version of webkit (blink / chrome now) with massive vulnerabilities in WebGL cuz why not. Android has had support for this out of the box since literally forever, shipping it as non-standard is kinda shooting everyone in the foot there are many many many many many things which would be better handled from native capabilities of the operating system.
@hukeskypotter5149
@hukeskypotter5149 5 жыл бұрын
Many of the things he talks about in the video is exactly the points I am talking about, the link in chrome doesn't open because chrome is not looking to open the uri scheme or is failing to or is just not configured to open an app, lastly there is a massive huge question mark in my head about how Dex will handle UI isolation.
@NikolasHonnef
@NikolasHonnef 5 жыл бұрын
@@hukeskypotter5149 Exactly my thoughts. Samsung often introduces these obvious features in a state that makes it look like they work a certain way, but when you take a closer look they actually work the same as they always did, just now you can mistake them for something else. In this case they can market it as a "full desktop mode", when in reality it just looks like a desktop but still has the same mobile limitations as always. Then Google comes along and actually makes them work (or sometimes not :P) and usable for the entire ecosystem, but Samsung fans can proclaim that Samsung did it first and Google is just playing catch-up.

I've been using both Dex and a Pixelbook, trying to decide which one does it better. I don't disagree with your points. Most of them, I've also noticed to be true. However, even though your channel is about Chrome OS, you should have admitted the couple of clear advantages that DEX has over a Chromebook: 1) It's a pain that I can't put app icons on the desktop on a Chromebook....The Chromebook gives you only the shelf for icons. On DEX, as with Windows, you can put icons anywhere on the desktop. 2) DEX is one of the few operating environments where I can post widgets such as email widgets, giving easy at-a-glance access (and of course, many other widgets). 3) I find the S-Pen on Samsung's phones and tablets to be superior to any other pen I've tried...including my Pixelbook Pen (and Surface Pen).

@3165dwayne Its funny that you say android is only for phones doing not too many things at a time when android is the only mobile OS that actually lets you do many things at a time, more than any other OS, at least in samsung phones: two apps running simultaneously using half of the screen each, one or more apps running on tiny resizeable or minimizeable windows over the other two, all while listening to spotify and/or downloading torrents. If you know other mobile systems that are capable of that, please let me know to give it a look. I would be pretty surprised.

Sounds like Dex and Chrome OS are both in infancy and will continue to grow into great OS. Sounds like it really depends if you want a tablet that can handle some work tasks when you need it to, like a student maybe, or a more PC set up for primary work and when that's done quickly and easily move into your entertainment/tablet side of things. 2 in 1s or convertibles never grabbed me because I felt they were too far from being a tablet. I'm really in a hard decision over the galaxy tab S4 and the new pixel slate. I think they are both exceptional devices and have really found that happy middle between a laptop and a true tablet. Nice review and explanation btw

Very good review, with no sugarcoating. I personally prefer DeX because I don't want it to replace my laptop (which usually stays at home). For me it's a more convenient way of doing things that are doable on the phone anyway - browse the web, write some comments to which I attach photos from the day (made with the phone) without waiting for them to sync on oftenly questionable Internet connection, view map applications on a larger screen, sometimes do something in Word or Excel. All of that with having all the data in one place untill I can get home and let it sync through a proper connection. DeX is good if you know what exactly you expect from it.

On the 9th of march 2019 I got my new Samsung... S10. I used for a week Samsung Dex on S9. But now I have the S10. Yesterday I installed Ubuntu with 'Linux on Dex' on my S10. And it's quite fast🚀 I'm astonished 😯 I like the idea to use my smartphone like a PC with Samsung Dex. I saw in the internet that one can use for example Windows 10 with Microsoft Azure... also a cloud Windows 10. In my case, I prefer a Samsung S10 instead of a Chromebook, because I have a very quick ability to use Ubuntu with Linux on Dex or Windows 10 in Microsoft's cloud. O.k., the Microsoft cloud solution cost extra. But Linux on Dex works fine withy Samsung S10. And it's just 1 device instead of a Chromebook and a smartphone. And with an unlimited mobile contract it's like a laptop and cable internet. Last month I used nearly 1,500GB over mobile traffic, therefore I don't need anymore a laptop and no cable internet. And who will need cable internet anymore, if they turn on 5G🤔

I'm going to have to disagree with nearly everything in this video. I have an S20 Ultra. DeX is incredibly fast on this phone. Let's address some things you mentioned: 1- Productivity: DeX has windows screens, allows for drag and dropping from window to the next, supports multiple monitors, and has the ability to snap windows from one side of the screen to the next. 2- ChromeOS running Android/Android running Chrome and Kiwi extensions. Chrome Mobile runs Chrome extensions. Kiwi runs Chrome Desktop specific extensions. You can now have a full version of ChromeOS on iOS or Android with that. I have a ChromeOS... Android running Chrome extensions is far faster and productive than vice versa. 3-Development for: while ChromeOS primarily supports web based apps, so does Android via Cordova/Phonegap. Android can also make use of Java development and C/C++ development. Also check out B4X.com and you can develop in .Net Basic language. 4-Available apps: Androids software library exceeds ChromeOS. Probably by 1000 times. Most software that a typical user would need is found in Androids Library like Adobes software suite, Microsoft Office, development IDEs, emulators, games, etc.. If you are missing a game or app you would normally use on your PC, you can use Steam Link to play them. If you are also away from your home, just use a VNC type software and you can plug into your PC at home even using software like Unity 3D with Splashtop. 5- Portability: DeX offers you the opportunity to take all your files with you and just plug in anywhere that has a monitor. Your phone can act as a Mouse and Keyboard if need be. You can connect your device and use DeX on a pc, any monitor, portable touch screens TV, TV, etc... You can optionally also connect SD cards, USB drives and Bluetooth Keyboards, mice and controllers. 6- Gaming: Gaming is a horrible experience compared tSlashdot. Overall, this idea is outdated. Google should leave Chrome Extensions but discontinue ChromeOS and work on OS like RemixOS using Android as its primary desktop OS.

It boils down to whether or not the tools are available and effective for the platform you're working with when you do "work". For my work environment we use a hosted desktop and the Dex environment will run the viewer without a problem. If someone's work environment relies on locally installed software then of course you're subject to the availability and reliability of those apps in whatever environment you choose.

Nice video. I've never understood the difficulty in getting productivity out of any phone/tablet that connects to a keyboard/monitor/mouse. Just use Remote Desktop. Every company I've worked for had at least a TerminalServer. I also have a computer at home that acts as my media server that I use as a personal Windows Remote Desktop. I've never felt the need for a beefy laptop because of this "thin client" mentality. I wanted to try Dex on my s9 but my regular USB-C dock doesn't trigger it - but I could load Microsoft's RDP app fine and got a full windows experience on it. My current tablet - a Galaxy Tab S Pro and Galaxy Book 12 are by far the best laptop/tablets I've ever had. I get to 100wpm + on their keyboards and the big OLED screens are only surpassed by my LG 65" OLED at home .They are the best portable entertainment centers and can run any windows app. This week I was just loading huge Excel sheets on them. I really don't get why they don't get more love. The Surfaces, by comparison, are terrible. The Galaxy Tab S4 is a complete rip off in comparison to the Galaxy Tab S Pro/Galaxy Book 12.

I just got a note 9, and am looking at which adapter to get for DeX. Some people say DeX limits the resolution to 720 and only allows 5 apps at once if a 3rd party adapter is used. I know the official DeX adapters range from 50 to 80, but if I can find a USB C to HDMI for half that, might as well save a few dollars. But if the limitations are true, I'd rather pay more to have the full DeX experience. Has anyone experienced this limitation with 3rd party adapters?

@Soggy Android Samsung phones cannot run macros in excel or sheets... Chromebooks can. phones can not run chrome extension...Chromebooks can I say that Chromebooks are more of a work horse than a phone but not as good as a Windows computer. But who wants to pay twice as much for a computer that is subject to more virus.

I'm a web applications developer, and I have just configured my Note 9 to do pretty much everything I do on my windows desktop, with the difference that I can disconnect it, put it in my POCKET and walk away. My travel gear just became a lot lighter as well. In the place of my laptop, a mini bluetooth keyboard and mouse, and a simple USB-C to HDMI cable. You can keep your Chromebook.

Good review. I feel you're a tad hard on DEX due to your Chrome learnings, but you do look a bit deeper at the productivity shortcomings of DEX and the like. I'm nomadic so my requirements always sway between heavy productivity and ultra mobile. Have used many combos over the years. Thought I could upgrade my iPhone SE to a 7 recently as used a 6S before with BT keyboard as second screen to a Galaxy Tab 10 Note. But the 7 didn't hit the spot. Not small enough to get out my way, and not a productivity beast. So occasionally I scout and research Androids and been considering a power phablet with DEX. Idea being can travel light with one powerful machine Candidates the Sammie's, LG V35, ASUS 5Z, Huawei P10 to Mate 20 X. Pocophone F1. I'm always conscious of the time I waste researching Androids which you don't do with iPhone. Well spent hours yesterday at electronics centre trying to find the ASUS as the LG V35 is hard to find in Asia. I'm glad I couldn't find one, as during my search I thought do I really need an Android phablet? I just deleted Manjaro Linux and installed Chrome OS on an old laptop and will sell my old MacBook Air. The old laptop is pretty heavy compared to current hardware, and won't be lugging it around like I used to. So that may still leave a productivity gap when working at the café etc. A phablet would drop right in there, but beyond this use case I can't see me using one. If a DEX like desktop solution was viable then that would tip me, but my experience with DEX alternatives, (SENTIO etc) hasn't been convincing. Thus I may have to fill that mobile productivity gap with paper, pen and speech to text/dictation. Interested to hear other stories.

I got a chromebook last week and I like it. I bought the samsung chromebook 3. With the play store I've been able to pretty much do what I want. I recently had a windows 10 laptop suffer a brutal death at the hands of there latest update. That alone made me explore my options. ChromeOS is the future and people need to get on board. I notice linux (beta) is available but I have no idea on how to use it so I won't activate it. I am glad also that I waited to check out chromeOS. I wanted to see how it matured before diving into it.

That's an understatement about DeX. Optimized apps do *behave* differently, so it is unfair to say it's just an app. Many Microsoft apps for example provide great experience. It's also up to Google to give you extensions or not on Android, that's not a shortcoming of DeX. On top of all that, I get the full desktop Chrome on DeX through Ubuntu Linux. And when I'm done, boom, it fits into my pocket!

So i am able to do all the things you mentioned on dex itself, the only thing you cannot do on dex itself is have the ide for development, but I was able to install phpstorm and others on linux on dex and you can have inspect element there too. and if you boil down to it, you can pretty much compile or get there anything you want, but as for example opening docs in chrome itself, it is easy, not sure where you got the problem

I would love to have the one device for my kid. He's 7 and the Lenovo 300e looks perfect for his needs. Before parting with my cash however I decided to create him a google account, linked to the Family for the features offered and tried it out on my Asus C302. Then I discovered a huge hole in Google's line-up. While they allow kids to have pure Android devices (managed by parents) they don't allow Android Apps to be installed in a Kids account on a Chromebook. I can't even access KZfaq Kids in his account on the Chromebook because it tells me to install the App, but I can't install the app as the playstore is completely hidden. There are some fantastic educational Apps I want him to be able to use too. It's SO frustrating. I don't want to get two devices as it would be a waste of money, especially when the Lenovo is physically capable of satisfying both requirements. I hope Google address this very soon.

The problems you describe saying that when you open gmail or the calendar you don't get a the latest version of the websites UI...that's not Samsung's fault. That's a Google issue. Samsung has their own calendar and email applications that are perfectly optimized for DEX. I don't use gmail or google calendar app so my protonmail and business calendar works fine on the Samsung Browser.

Google are just lazy to not have brought out a fully featured full desktop browser for Android Dex modes yet. Very very lazy. There is no reason an Android device like with Dex can't run a full Chrome browser, with 100% of everything that you see in Chrome OS or in any Chrome browser on Windows, Linux or Mac. Also all the Google apps on Android look like crap for productivity. There is no reason Google hasn't yet provided a full mouse/keyboard optimized version of Gmail, Gmaps, Gphotos, KZfaq Creator and so much else yet. When you're a trillion dollar company and when every top level software developer in the world wants to work for you, you just don't have any excuse not to have executed on it yet. Also no hardware accelerated Chrome on Windows 10 for Snapdragon yet is a real real big shame.

Such a wrong strategy, after 3 Billion people are using Android every day, how could Google miss the boat so badly on this, I just don't understand what they must be thinking. Don't get me wrong I am a much bigger Chrome OS fanboy than ChromeUnboxed, but Google is just executing totally wrong. 5 years ago Chrome OS should have overtaken Windows on the Laptop and Desktop market. By now, iOS should not even exist.

I think you are a little bit harsh on Google here. I agree that the Android apps of Google could be a little better optimized for productivity on a larger screen, so that I do not feel that I am missing the browser version all the time. But Chrome on Android is optimized for mobile and that kind of battery usage. Releasing the desktop version of Chrome on Android would just give Google way to much support trouble, just to support a little niche product like DEX. I can't really see why Google should bother with it yet. DEX is Samsung's creation, and Samsung has their own browser. They should make a full featured Desktop browser for use with DEX. Not Google.
