I had a professor that this guy reminds me of and I ended up working in his lab for a few years. If he said something like 'nothing may happen because it's an old sample', you knew the roof of the lab was about to be blown off. Brilliant guy and a joy to work with.

@ArtfulDawdger saying chemist to mean pharmacist is used in informal everyday language, so you might say 'i'm going to the chemists' when you're going to but medicine, or you could say 'i'm going to the pharmacist's', both would be understood as pretty much the same thing (most people don't really see non pharmacist chemists everyday). but in universities and where you're likely to find ACTUAL chemists, chemist and pharmacist are used differently (the same as the US probably).

I was wondering if the professor's hair might catch on fire. I'm glad it didn't because it's no laughing matter. I like the way he does his presentations. When the professor was gringing CrO3 in a mortar with a pestle, I saw a color change occur from green to crimson (on the sides of the mortar). I saw another video where Potassium chlorate and Potassium ferricyanide were ground together and the color change went from red to green. Very interesting.

I just remembered, one of his quirks was to keep his mobile phone in an old sock. It would be ringing and finally he would realize and pull out this really long sock and unravel it and dig out his phone. I asked him why he kept it in a sock and he acted like he was surprised everyone didn't keep their phones in a 'sock protector'.

@FHomeBrew True, but the gas in the bottle may be a mix of fuel and air. When at the correct proportions, this mixture may be combustible, making the bottle explode. This is a problem in itself if you're dealing with a glass bottle, but even with a plastic bottle this means that the fuel gets sprinkled around. All this can mean that the person holding the bottle will have a very bad day.

@riveness In most places, it would have been carried out in a fume cupboard, however, since the prof. is the safety officer, he obviously deemed that there was sufficient ventilation in that lecture hall for this particular experiment. Otherwise, it probably would have been done outside.

That Oxidation state of cromium is quite dangerous, where I did my technician studies in chemistry we did a research on affordable ways of turning Cr+6 back to Cr+3, and turns out some bacteria in cow/horse excrement can do that!, so if some determined area is contamined with Cr+6 and you wanna turn into an agricultural field, just go ahead and add manure! (Obs: Very High concentration of Cr+6 may be harsh even to the bacterias so that's why this is a biological affordable solution)

@FHomeBrew Chromium trioxide and ethanol are water soluble, the Ethanol would certainly oxidise but in a rather more controled manner, it is the reaction that is the basis of the original breathalysers used to check for breath in drink driving, i think they use dichromate salt rather than CrO3 (still Cr 6+) though. The crystals go from orange to green, others feel free to correct me, from memory and not checked facts before posing.

When I used chromium trioxide in my labs we had to use in a fume hood because it was carcinogenic, inhalation of fine particles is a serious risk especially when you grind the solid using a pestle and mortar. Don't know about them but I don't fancy inhaling a carcinogenic compound.

@Noxid666 Not ture. As you heard there are several safety issues with the compound. Normal safety practice in the lab where I work would be to have that compound used in a fumehood using appropriate PPE and precautions. It is disappointing not because the people making the videos don't know the risks, but that the audience clearly don't know standard safety practices. What does a student think when we see something like this?

@entoris476 not narrow minded but simplified. I have a masters in my area of chemistry so do not talk down to me. And from my understanding the effect i was referring to was the slow disintegration of DNA through cells being feed with oxygen causing life and also causing the cells to divide to the point where cancer can form from a blip in the DNA.

Chromium is really only dangerous in the +6 oxidation state(chromate, dichromate, and CrO3). The rest of its compounds are relatively non-carcenogenic, at least not because of the chromium.
@ihaveballsofsteel

Chromium in trioxide has oxidation state +6, and goes to oxidation state +3 upon reaction. Why is it that when I use Potassium Manganate (VII) where the manganate has oxidation state 7+ in titrations, where it goes to manganate 2+ upon reaction with a reducing agent I don't get the same sort of exothermic reaction?

@pokemonmaster4ever63 That is hard to quantify. I am case it is unlikey and there probably would be particles of the Cr03 in the fumes. However due to its other hazards, normal practice would be to use this in a fumehood. But I am more worried on the audience perspective who will not be in the position to make educated hazards.

@bamboo4tameshigiri it is a known fact that methanol (which exists in most alcoholic beverages) is the cause for a lot of the side effects. Non distilled alcohol beverages like wine, which contain more of it, give you a far worse hangover. The same goes for everything that ripened in a wooden barrel. The purer the ethanol, the less your morning is gonna suck. You still got the problem with dehydration and missing other stuff. I don't need to wager on anything.
