My daughters service dog is a rescue. We picked him based on temperament (he is not a pretty boy, poor guy) and worked with a private trainer. He is AMAZiNG! However, we get a ton of backlash from the service dog community because he is a rescue but all you have to do is watch him, to see that he is an excellent service dog and he LOVeS his job!

I remember a picture book I read when I was younger about a dog 🐶heaven 😇. I hope that Oakley (Sorry if I spelled his name wrong) is sleeping on clouds 🌥, eat plenty of biscuits 🍪, and get walked by angels 👼. But most of all, I hope that when its her time, Harlow will join Oakley in the stars ✨.

We got a lot of backlash when we re-homed a rescue we had adopted. I was heartbroken and did nothing but cry for days, and some people online (and close to us) were awful. She had come from a farm with other dogs, and we live in an apartment with no dogs, but she was intensely leash-reactive and struggled greatly with anxiety. We knew after a week that this wasn’t fair to her and she was just miserable. She’s so much happier now, and I know we made the right decision. I’m so glad you’ve found the right dog for you!

She’s unfortunately not good with other dogs or meeting new people but she loves the people she loves 🤗💜 we are very aware about curtain situation and make sure other dogs and people aren’t put at risk...We all need to respect other dogs mad their space 😉😁😊 Our dog Beatrice ( Bea for short;) loves her walks and car rides. I am training my service dog with an organisation which is quite normal here in The Netherlands. After months of searching we decided to start with a puppy. (They usually start with dogs that are 8-10 months old) Then after the puppy got to the age of about 4 months I started the training program. Getting private lessons at home on how to train the dog every 2 weeks. It takes somewhere from 12-16 months to fully train the dog. My service dog is going to be certified soon. He's already passed most of his exams. But because he's still so young (keep in mind that most dogs there start training when their about 8-10 months old) I still will be training a lot. My service dog does have reactivity to other dogs when on the leash. He wants to play. But we are making progress there as well. Perhaps anyone has any other tips I could use? I find it awesome to see how much my dog loves to work for me. He doesn't just want his food in a bowl. He wants to work for it. He learns new things so quickly. A lot of people are amazed about all the things he can do for his age. It's unfortunate that in the US getting an service dog is so much more complicated then it is here. Hopefully this will change one day.

Harlow could tell you were getting upset so she was trying g to distract you. She doesn't want you to be sad. Harlow is such a great service dog for you.

Jaquie, I so enjoyed this video. It was so informative. It's so depressing that there are people out there scamming people just to make money while hurting the dogs and the owners who are struggling with health issues. I don't know what's wrong with people in this world but you are so fortunate to have gotten Harlow and I think the fact that you trained her yourself probably makes her more responsive to your needs. Even if you get a service dog that has some basic training, I think it's necessary for the person the dog is going to be working with to continue that training so that the dog is a suitable match. I'm a dog lover as well and it's always heartbreaking to lose an animal or have to re-home them for any reason, though you absolutely did the right thing. I'm glad you didn't give up and ultimately got the PERFECT dog for you. You look great, by the way. I'm hoping the new treatments are helping you, though you did say that your POTS was giving you issues today. Hopefully that will subside soon.

I got a 3 month old husky mix to train as my service dog and he was biting and chasing other dogs. I was so upset but I couldn't keep him. 😔 We took him back to the shelter and gave or recommendations for a new home. He got adopted and I got a 9 month old standard poodle. 😊

Thank you for sharing! I myself have already went though one dog. Malachi was doing great in his service work until he become reactive to dogs, and developing anxiety himself. My trainer and I decided it was best to pull him from service work. I am now in the journey with a new dog Eleanor! She’s a bright lovable Labrador retriever.

I feel like I lucked out because I never grew up with dogs and had a dog phobia till recently. I got my SDIT from a “backyard” breeder a month ago. His name is Shiloh(meaning messiah or peace) and he is part of the litter that I wanted a dog from a past but was too scared to get. I’ve had been training him like crazy and he already goes out in public with me. I’m getting used to everything but it’s great so far. LOVED THIS VIDEO!❤️

I self trained. I have 4 dogs. One was my sister's service dog. The second was mine for psych and i retired her when i got another dog that showed more promise in working with my needs. I took her out more. I started with a beagle mix. Now I have a Chihuahua. They were rescues and in Florida you are allowed to self train so i worked with them. My Chihuahua is getting older and not wanting to work so i am working on training my next dog or looking into another dog that can meet my needs through an organization. Being a self trainer i know that there are certain standards for public access, health for the dog, the temperament, thier social interaction, focus on handler, as well as the basic behavior (ie potty trained ect)

I've been trying to owner train my service dog, I have a trainer but she doesn't specialise in service dog training. I haven't been able to find a good service dog trainer and luckily my pup is great, a little high energy and has some focusing problems, but we're doing the best we can. I wish I could have found another trainer before he came. Thanks for sharing your story!

GREAT video Jaquie! People need to realize that it is not easy-speezy getting/training a service dog. My S.D. passed about two months ago and I miss him dearly. I really needed a larger dog the past few years and was slowly starting to retire him, but bless his soul, he worked until the day he passed. I still need a dog but no longer can afford the $20-30k a trained s.d. costs. I trained Bodhi myself so I too am hoping to find a decent breeder for either a golden or a Shiloh Shepard. These shepherds are NOT on the AKC records because they have been bringing this breed back to what original shepherds were....they barred for temperament and health also, refusing to breed for the "sloped stance" you see at most shows. This is what ruined them...and their hips. The pups go through 12 hours of testing since puppyhood and I will go through 6 hours of testing and then both of us get tested to see if we're the proper fit. They will not allow a more stong-willed dog to go to someone who has never had a shepherd or dog in general. They will be sure you get a more laid-back dog. My problem now is trying to find a breeder that doesn't want $5,000 and up for their pups. If you should know of a breeder or know someone that does, would you please be ever so kind as to let me know? Since my disease is progressing, i need one more than ever----not to mention that ive pretty-much have started to hole-up in my house for fear of needing a dog while I'm out and not having one. Again, soooooooo glad you did this very informative video for those who are thinking about getting a dog. You will save many a heartache that sadly you had to endure. Aw Harlow comforting you when you talked about Oakley was so sweet. Dogs ARE amazing. Thank you for this video, it really helps to hear the reality of the struggles you have been through for someone who is looking to get their own SD. Last week my dad and I were walking our dogs next to a busy road, and a beautiful black lab puppy (definitely under a year maybe 8 months), was dumped by some people in front of medical offices (I saw a lady do it) and they sped off. The poor pup met my dogs eyes and ran to play and they played and spun in circles and I was trying to grab a hold and then it happened. He darted away into the street and was hit in the right back leg by a car. It was the most heartbreaking thing to witness and this dog ran to ME and fell into my lap and just laid there silently. We got the drivers info and got the dog to the vet, of course no microchip or identification. He had a broken knee right where his growth plate is (as well as major intestinal distress from eating Trash, not even the accident) and required a specialist and a $4500 surgery. He was going to be put to sleep for sure in our town, so I called EVERYWHERE and found a lab rescue 2 1/2 hours away that would take him. I kept him overnight on pain meds and during the morning to take him to rescue I fell going up stairs and majorly sprained my ankle. This dog with a broken LEG I had just MET, that was on painkillers and sedatives, got up and stumble Ran to get to me down 2 stairs to help me. He just had surgery yesterday and went to his new foster. I (and my boy) miss him so much already and I will be so happy when he gets a home in the beautiful place he's at. One day, when I get my service dog, I hope it's like him.

I had a lab and collie mix who we rescued and she was only 8 weeks when we got her.. unfortunately she didn’t work out and was extremely aggressive! Resource guarding and then Bitting me and barking at other dogs (keep in mind she was 16 weeks when this behavior arose) she was VERY smart but temperament wise absolutely horrible. We tried everything to save her (trainers, books ect.) I contacted a well known service dog trainer on Instagram who told me to rehome her immediately. My hands still have scars to this day from her mauling my hands. I now have a pure bred golden retriever named Teddy who is absolutely AMAZING! We rehomed the lab mix to a vet tech who had many behavioral therapists in her area (which we didn’t have those resources) A video went viral (60k views) on Facebook of her aggression with me.. I got lots of hate saying I abused my dog and made her like that. It was a tough time and I was absolutely disgusted by the comments, when all I did was try and help her. Some dogs are just not cut out to me SDs and that’s just life.

I lost one of my pet pooches last June and I still miss her everyday. She was the creature who kept the other side of the bed warm when I lost my husband in 2013, so for me she was more then just a family member she was, my security dog, my heating pad, my pillow, my companion, my tear licker, and my pet. Grief sucks! glad you all are now starting to heal from losing Oakley, I am lucky to still have Fundys sister but hope I will always have a pooch in my life.

The worst thing about having a pet is losing them when the time comes, especially when it comes unexpectedly. It's beyond heartbreaking and it's comparable to losing a family member or close friend. They become a part of your family and you love them so deeply. I can't bear the thought.

Great video. It's sad about the journey through various service dogs, but you learn as you go. And God will provide you with what He intends for your path. On a side note, dogs lick certain things because it feels good on their tongue and also releases a chemical in them that makes them feel good.

I still have my first working service dog, she is turning 10 soon and I'm finally noticing her slowly down. She has been retired for a while and the dog I got to take over her position didnt work out. The poodle baby I have now to work with is finally starting to mold into this amazing dog. Dang Usually NEVER this early to a video. I mean in all honesty that is amazing that you finally found Harlow. I know one of your previous service dogs as you said became injured and had problems of his own so he became your dads dog and house pet. I mean it seems even a pet sometimes specific dogs just arent a match but service dogs it could be even more disheartening when the dog and humans dont click..Great that you did find Harlow and you 2 work amazingly together.

I often get strange hr changes even when sitting down for a long time. All of a sudden I'll get hit with that pre-syncope feeling while I'm reclining in my chair. Check my vitals and BP is usually really low (like 80s/40s) when it happens and for some reason my HR monitor will show my HR either dropping or soaring at the time of the pre-syncope feeling. Does that happen to you? I know it's my Dysautonomia.

Agreed-research and knowledge is key!!! I have RA and may someday need a service dog. I made the decision to do owner service dog training-my children gifted me a puppy last year (AKC certified yellow lab-amazing bloodline for both health and temperament). We are currently going through obedience training for both her and I with an amazing trainer who has great knowledge in training dogs as pets, therapy work, scent alert, agility, and service dog work. She is an AKC certified trainer and judge. Many years experience, highly reputable. When i met her she really laid everything out for me. Was honest and upfront. She wanted to make sure that I knew exactly what I was getting into with service dog training. The time and energy commitment as well as the financial commitment. And there’s no guarantee that my dog will be a fit for service dog work. I have time before the need is actually there so I have decided for the first two years to really work on obedience and then have her evaluated to see if she is a good fit for work. It is a journey that’s for sure but as you said, you’ve got to have the right expectations going into it. Plus I’ve learned from you too!!

I VERY much got lucky with Riya. While she was not my first dog, she WAS my first SD and she has done amazingly so far. She was not intended to be a service dog and had initially been trained for therapy work before my health declined. We learned that she had a few natural alerts as well as an intense desire to work. She will be four in August and we have been a "team" for going on two and a half years. We have, however, acknowledged our luck and will definitely be going with a reputable breeder for my next service dog when she retires. :)

Awww!! Harlow and my dog (Toni) have the same Birthdate. Toni will be 2 on June 28th. I've been training my dog to be my service dog for my heart problem. I lost my dog of 12 years to cancer. My last dog would let me know before I got a bad spell so I could take my meds. He just did it out of no where with no training. I happened to figure out what he was doing I miss him so much. I'm so glad you have Harlow. It makes such a difference when you have a dog to alert you before you get worst or hurt yourself. Dogs are so amazing!!!

We had our family dog for 10 years. She got sick last night, and we thought it was from drinking too much pool water. So my parents took her to the vet... and it turned out to be her heart. You can't fix a heart... She was a Queensland Heeler named Sheila and I dont think I've ever been this sad over an animal. But maybe this can be a reminder to everyone to just hug your pets. You never know what could happen.

I’m 14 and am owner training my assistance dog because I couldn’t find an organisation that could give me a dog to help with all my needs it would either just do seizure alert or just be an autism assistance dog or just be a psychiatric assistance dog so I decided to owner train and so far it’s going pretty well I did all the research before I got her and we go to kennel club training classes she has just turned a year and is currently on the gold level and she has been amazing she is going to start coming to school with me in a few weeks aswell

Dogs are amazing and gifts for us. I have always said that somehow God places the perfect dog with us when we need them. I say this as I am dog sitting my sisters and my parents dogs and have four dogs in beds with me. I really do think that dogs know what and when we needs things to make us feel better. I rescued at German Shepherd I'll be honest Initially not my choice but I could n`t see anything bad happen . Probably think I'm crazy taking a dog I'd never seen just to save her. I quickly discovered she'd been kind of left to her own devices throughout her life, so made her own rules, health wise she was knackered. First few weeks were hell I'm thinking "What in the hell have I done " but look in her eyes I saw a very sad big lass, who looked as if she was carrying the world, over weeks and months it all clicked she was never trained as a service dog as such that wasn`t really the role, she wasn't`t frightened of wheelchairs, I dont know I cant explain it she just seemed to understand somethings it would be quite useful if she helped with , I was stunned how switched on she was. Best Dog I ever had

I loved that dog so much, but I lived in a small apartment, and was very sick much of the time, so I found a great home and family who had a huge yard, and were retired, so they had tons of time to spend with her! Still miss her everyday but I'm sure she is getting everything she needs that I couldn't give her.

I’m so sorry about Oakley. That’s so sad.

I had to rehome a chocolate lab I had for about a year. We got him from someone who couldn't care for him anymore. I just didn't realize then that he didn't fit with my lifestyle. I know he loved living on my farm. He loved being outside so much, that he would run off at night and I would have end up having to leave him out all night because he would not come in. And I worked too much to interact with him the way he needed. He was too strong for me, so I couldn't control him very well either. And he didn't listen very well or get along with our female black lab. So, I eventually concluded that he needed a family with kids he could play with and a strong male figure, as he seemed to listen to men better. I don't know what he's up to now, but the last time the family who got him sent me an update he was doing great.

I'm on the heartbreak part of my journey. I happened to get a dog who ended up being very wrong for me. He's way too high energy, has some odd fears, and is too excitable to stimuli and other dogs. Also, my health has started failing seriously, and i need much better treatment options before I can do this again.

Ever since Marching Band season I have had several episodes... we don’t know what they are, or what is causing them... I have done some research into the symptoms.... many times, I have had to sit out of band or go into the band director’s office because I don’t t feel well enough to play... I have went to my pediatrician and they have done little to nothing to help me get diagnosed.... I want to go to see a specialist, but I don’t know who....

We got a pitbull puppy and had to give him back to the rescue becuase he was showing signs of aggression. In the week we had him he started to latch on to us and shake his head. When we would cry in pain he would bite harder and growl. We have a 11 year old son and 5 year old Chihuahua and we had to think of my son and other dog. People were acting like "oh he is just a puppy" but it really wasn't. It was more and he also was very disconnected with people. He wouldn't really make eye contact with us and when he would it was like he was looking through us. It felt like there was something wrong with him. It was so hard to give him back. My heart hurts and it hurts that people act like we just couldn't take him being a puppy when that wasn't the case at all. I miss his goofy butt every day but I know he wasn't a good fit for us.

Hi Jaquie, thank you for sharing your journey. What I'm about to say isn't directed at you personally. It's more of a personal thing I really need to voice and this feels like a good time and space to do so. I've been having a difficult time with some of the service dog handler videos on youtube lately. All these videos titled "dog ATTACKS my SERVICE DOG", "dog DISTRACTS my SERVICE DOG", "dog BITES my SERVICE DOG", and the like. I am happy you have found your canine match and may I also point out that the result was a 3 to 1 rejection rate (no hate do what's right for you). These "rejects" need to go somewhere aka the general population who's just looking for a pet. So, my argument and hope is that service dog handlers, especially on youtube, may consider being more accepting of "misbehavior" in pet dogs. As you explained, not every dog is perfect, not every dog is service dog material, and many dogs just are the way they are in some ways and there is nothing that can be done no matter the amount or quality of training. When I see the above type of videos I get very angry. I also am familiar with lots of dog behavior/training and most of the shown scenes titled "ATTACK" and "AGGRESSIVE dog lunges at my SERVICE dog" and the like actually are far from the real definition of aggression and attack. They're just reactive dog behavior with no intent of hurting the other dog and extremely common. So, as a handler myself of an imperfect dog that I've worked very hard on adjusting her behavior I have become terrified of encountering a "perfect" service dog in public space and the potential consequences despite my handling my dog responsibly. All I am asking for is that service dog handlers take some responsibility as well and do not expect a passing pet dog to be perfectly behaved or even friendly because with a 3 to 1 reject rate (or 2 to 2 if you don't count Oakley) that is unrealistic. Give us (yourself) some space if you need your service animal not distracted in pet-friendly public areas. In the unfortunate event that my dog may lunge (on the leash!!) or bark consider to be understanding instead of judgmental and putting it on KZfaq. Maybe even be a little grateful for us taking in the imperfect ones and giving them a loving home. None of this is condoning irresponsible handler behavior or sneaking your pet dog into places as a fake service animal. I've seen it and I recognize it ("service" dog on flexi lead in grocery store shopping a different aisle than it's owner lol). Wishing you and Hippo the best
