Chronicles of Drunagor: Age of Darkness has one of the most fun leveling up systems I've engaged with in any dungeon crawlers. Combine that with a decent story, an amazing interaction system, incredible minis and you should have a game that I absolutely love.....and I do. But not without some complaints as well.

5 - Great game. Period. It's in my collection. Obviously.
4 - Really solid game but for reasons X or Y, I'm just not willing to give it my top score. Almost always a game I'm adding to my collection.
3 - A solid game. May or may not enter/leave my collection depending on a number of factors such as other similar games, personal interest, people I play with etc. Sometimes can reflect a game's allure dropping over time.
2 - I'm either not the target audience, or too many issues with it.

Absolutely amazing game and the best dungeon Crawler I have by far! One suggestion: Turn the QR code process into a mobile APP (so we can download the content to play offline)!!! Also I won`t mind getting a “nightmare mode” using all the titles from the expansions and with increased difficulty!! This way we could use all the content we have in a second “nightmare mode” playthrough.

@@nipzie Although I like the idea of an “ upgrade” kit with additional printed doors for a Hard mode (we could buy a new set of doors with different dungeon layout and different monsters) I don’t think that the game needs a streamlined version. So far loke the rules as they are.

Great review...was a late backer, so couldn’t comment on their Kickstarter page, but their communication throughout production phase etc was top class, and also to deliver mostly on time during a pandemic was a great achievement...Well done CGS👍

My new #1. It's a complete package. Team really tried to think through everything. Even the packaging and stretch goal box design. Appreciate the storage, way above many of other games. Next version would like to get some backstory to the heroes.

Another really cool looking game I passed on because I knew it would not get played. When it is new and shiny it is easier to get to the table but after a few plays these 'big' games usually get skipped.

I don't disagree with that. Dungeon crawls with setup time generally do have ebbs and flows in when I play them.

Awesome Alex! Thanks for this great review. Surely CGS will work very hard to find new aspects to cover some of these points you have mentioned as downside. This is just the first step of a long journey for Drunagor Saga. A lot is coming soon.

Thanks for the review! I'm very interested in this game and will look forward to the KS in July. The leveling-up system seems to be very similar to Middara. How would you compare the two?

Absolutely agree 100% with your positive review. I have completed the base 18 chapter campaign playing 2 heroes solo (Mage & Cleric). As to your negative points, being an avid dungeon crawler player I didn't find that setting up a new section of dungeon any more time-consuming than other random dungeon games, and while it does take up quite a bit of table space (most notably the player boards), again, it is not much more than say Sword & Sorcery or Deep Madness and less so than Dungeon Crusade or Shadows of Brimstone. And as to the difficulty, it may have been the hero pairing I chose (or the fact I'm not a great player!) but I found the standard difficulty about spot on with most chapters coming down to the wire - win or lose. However overall, it is definitely right up there with my favourite crawlers and your coverage of its "best" points aligns very well with my own. Bring on the expansion.

Agreed on comparing to some dungeon crawlers, for my S&S I found much easier to deal with, but it does depend for sure.

This game is a ton of fun. I hope they have some sort of tray for the enemy health tracker in the next campaign to keep those cubes organized.

How is the fiddlyness for solo game? do we have to play multiple heroes for solo game? Is it too much to solo manage 3 heroes?

You can play with 1 hero. Scales from 1 up. But, playing with 1 could be not as interesting as the heroes can work together. I don't think managing 3 or even 4 would be tough. I only plan on using 2 due to table space.

Good review. I was very close to backing this, but the fiddly parts of the game, especially the Darkness, was a bit of a put off. The game looks really cool though, otherwise. Out of curiosity, does anyone know how many pages the rulebook is?

I liked Sword & Sorcery but got rid of it...wasn't worth the rules and constant checking of stuff. I thought it was solid but not for me.

I have a giant table and I always play alone. Just receive it yesterday and it is absolutely massive and I like games with a lot of things to do. I don't mind difficult rules or setup since I play slowly over the span of 6+ months always leaving the game on the table.

Just got through the first boss. Absolutely love it! The balance of everything is great. I agree with the critique, but I can't personally imagine how to streamline it w/o sacrificing complexity or fun.

Nice review ! well i have just done 2 or 3 1st mission with my son (who is 13 years old). the game is great but take a lot of space, this si sure ! i play on the floor as i don't have a huge table available :). token are nice but there are so many.. it is a litte bit painful to find the right one so i usually take one instead of another but keeping the effect :) ! by the way i'm French and when you talk in this video i got the impression you roughtly never breath :) !!

This is now my favourite game, and my mainstay is Dungeon Crawlers. There is a lot of content with the All-In pledged. CGS really did their homework on what makes a good game. I will be there for the next KS expansion and I do hope that they make the previous boxes available in its campaign. There are a lot of people that missed the 1st KS so I hope that CGS and reviewers give it more advertising. Looking at total KS money raised I think this game was just missed. They deserve the fame and the fortune for this game.

I think having a likeness of yourself in the game of course creates a bit of bias, but it's also clear from the review how much you genuinely enjoy the game. The tone of excitement in your voice as you go through the high points shines through and is something very difficult to fake. I'm certainly excited for the second campaign after this review and definitely plan on snagging an all-in pledge. Thanks for the review Alex, even if my wallet is crying because of it.

Great review, and I agree on many points - the darkness system is -just- a tad too fiddly for what it provides, although I am able to place the actual large pieces 85% of the time, so I'm not sure I agree when you said that you rarely use the bigger pieces (they're only supposed to not be used if they can't fit on the map. I definitely disagree with your assessment that the rulebook could be half the size! My only issue is that one or two of the sections could have been moved around to be a bit more logical, and it's possibly a bit long, but I would challenge anyone to adequately cover the rules and examples for this game in half of the size. I don't think that's possible. Gloomhaven's rulebook is about the same length. You can't have a game with the amount of mechanics included -and- campaign gameplay without a decently sized rulebook. That would just create a worse situation where people are forced to use the internet/bgg to get questions answered. Even with this rulebook I've had about 6 or 7 questions that came up!

I was a defenders of the old....but the trays they make work better for the new, so I prefer the old look but practically will use the new system.

How far did you play the campaign? The first 3 scenarios were easy to help you get into the game... Using the expansions and later stuff make it much harder...the weapon damage of even the best item is just 4....but the enemies do much more damage later... Have you experienced that yet? I love the cooperation and how you can boost each other.

Interesting. I find Drunagor extremely unfiddly, especially compared to other dungeon crawls out there. The overall management of the effects at the start of your turn is very elegant in my opinion. The biggest downsides (for now): - The game is too easy (bit QR-code-doors should fix that) - The story is too generic. - The lack of monster variety (you should open all expansions and mix them in from the start).

Not that I wouldn't like to try it, but I doubt I would prefer it over my favorite dungeon crawler, Shadows of Brimstone. Besides, I still have unplayed Middara on my shelf. :) Maybe I will back next Kickstarter, if they do a reprint of the base game.

If you have other dungeon crawlers you enjoy, there's no need to burden your shelves with another one. As much as I'm enjoying this, when people don't have the bug, I'm a fan of them saving their money

I notice that you didn't talk much about the non-combat aspects of the game, even though those were advertised pretty heavily in the kickstarter. As someone who dislikes Gloomhaven because it was too combat-centric, do you think this game probably isn't for me? Or is there a balance of combat puzzles and exploration like with Sleeping Gods?

You covered the in-mission interaction system, but I was hoping to hear more about the context around that -- what's the story and options like between missions? Is there a choose your own adventure aspect? Do you spend nearly all your time in dungeon crawls?

One of your complaints here suggests a new topic, and I think you are the right person to make original suggestions about it: making more table space, for games that need a lot of it. How can we enlarge our playing space by using that third dimension, height! To get you thinking: (1) I use various wooden racks that make it possible to keep (roughly) eight cards in a very viewable upright position, where normally I would only have room for three cards to lie flat. (2) Have a small three-level table by your side. Each level gives you about two more square feet of table space. (3) When I can afford it, I plan to buy one of those plexiglass dividers that stores use to protect their employees from covid-19. The divider will stand near me on my table, and I will tape see-through pockets to it, enabling me to emplace maybe fifteen cards in an area that would normally hold about five cards lying flat. - Toby

All those 3D type things, they have a place and there's a reason there are buyers for those products when they come up, but for me personally they add to the setup and tear down time and I value that more than I value the space. That said I recognize people will feel differently in terms of what they value and why.

So the biggest complaint is the game is to big. Love huge table games best part. As far as setting up after you open the door. That’s the best part of the game. It doesn’t take that long. This game is awesome on every level. Loved the rule book too. The first rule book I read and didn’t find it to be a chore. 10 out 10.

I almost backed this purely for the book of close up interactions. Everything looks amazing, but the Darkness tetris put me off so much, I went from all-in to cancel. Looks like the most annoying thing in the world

I was thinking of backing it but the darkness system turned me off. After watching some previews I felt the darkness system was making me rush. I loved the idea of the doors and the skill trees with the cubes.

I do wish the darkness system was changed, but I don't feel rushed by it, rather I feel that no matter where I am the darkness can still reach me, which affects my enjoyment of it. I don't mind being chased by it... But I do want to feel like I have a chance of getting away.

This looks incredibly fiddly and it does seem there's definitely a trend now for game creators just assuming everyone's got a table like you'd find in a banquet hall in a stately home.
