Parable - Religious History Documentaries

3 жыл бұрын

In the late 16th century, Europe was in the grip of a brutal witch hunt fever. Thousands were tortured and burnt at the stake. Up to 40,000 people may have been killed in France and Germany alone. England and Scotland were almost untouched by witch persecutions until King James decided to launch his own personal war on witchcraft. This war on witches likely fuelled the Salem witch trails in America a hundred years later.

it had a political angle: the non Christian cultures allowed women to own property and fill leadership positions. Romans, due to inheritance of culture from their pagan days, did NOT allow either. A charge of witchcraft could disable a female politician in an adsorbed culture, taking out 50% of Romes "enemies"without firing an arrow.

@scottbaino actually, they injected god into schools in the 50s. Actually school as we know it didn’t exist until the 20s-30s. The problem is that we’re actually having debates over wether or not to teach children knowledge from a book of fairy tales and not from the last 400 years of collective knowledge. But seriously, in what ways has this country declined since the 60s? And how is that directly related to a lack of Christianity being taught as fact? And which sect of the cult should we use? Protestant? Babtist? Catholic? Jehovas witness? Jewish? Methodist? Calvinist?... there are over a thousand different versions of “god”. Which one do you think we should use? Or should we not use any of them and use our ducking brains to figure stuff out? Just like the largely enlightened and atheist founding fathers made abundantly clear?

@scottbaino It seems rash to compare religious instruction in schools , or the lack of it , with the bizarre paranoia of witch hunts. History has shown , however , the types of repression that happen when religion combines with the power of the state & applies doctrine as law over the populace. The founders of America , for instance, recognized that the two must remain separate for freedom to exist , while they themselves had varying degrees & types of religious viewpoints. If we consider them to have been so wise , should we not consider following their example?

Magic in and of itself DOES exist but is itself a neutral force. Magic is never fully good or evil because without the intentions of the user it just exists as a form of energy. It is the intentions of the one using that force that determines if it's good or evil. Magic is no different than a computer, by itself that computer simply exists. when used by a person it can be used to do a lot of things that could be either good or bad but by itself that computer is nothing more than a tool. Magic can be compared to a gun or a knife, used PROPERLY a knife or gun can feed a family or protect one from harm. Used wrong they kill innocent people BUT no matter what the intent is for them a person is always required for them to actually DO anything. Magic is the same way and requires a person as a conduit for the energy to actually work, so the question should be is magic itself good or evil but rather is the person using it good or evil

@@OllamhDrab Well my paranoia or craziness it's true. Specifically here I'm talking about the Bible, Christianity and the Gospel. But could you please clarify what exactly is my Paranoia and craziness? From a Biblical perspective (even back to the Law of Moses, from which Human rights are derived), God spoke against it there. Thus, magic ain't nothing to play with. You're toying with things you don't understand, and will destroy you. Thus, a hard stance against magic, is wise....and is not as unreasonable or paranoid as you wish to make it sound.

@@joshuariston2924 Oh, and as for what magic is, it's always you Abrahamic monotheists demonizing and fearmongering and projecting about it. Your fear and hatred are about some sense of *control,* not what makes a living world alive. You just try to put your book between people and that, then say it's evil not to, but you're the ones always doing the evil and claiming you got an excuse from yer Bible. I say no thanks. Also, yes, magic is also much to do with 'F around and find out.' I do not suggest approaching it from Christian points of view and fears and devil characters. The reality is simpler, mostly less 'metal' and... well, I'm basically saying you're better off ignoring the religion you're pushing if you want to find out about it.

Historians have stated that king James possibly suffered from undiagnosed Porphyria but less severe compared to George III. He had an unpredictable temperament one moment he would imbue the pragmatic kingly persona the next time he’s a complete buffoon. In time, his erratic behavior coupled with other political issues made James immensely disliked by his new English subjects, laying down the embers of the English civil war.

I suppose, according to the perceptions of the time, that I, myself, could be accused of being a witch. A poor, old widow with absolutely no family, except my cadre of 6 cats, 3 of whom are black. Though not a member of the medical profession, I've often undertaken caring for sick & injured people & animals, but always with a physician's advice & instruction. And on occasion, I've been known to talk to myself, as solitary people do, which could be construed as muttering spells. I'm also a devoted Christian. So yes, King James would have thought me a witch. Fortunately, I cannot see, even with 2nd sight, a gallows or pyre in my future. Now, let me mount my broom for my evening buzz of my town. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! - the old hag cackled.

What always amazes me is how all of these historians all repeat the same assumption that all of those accused of witchcraft were not practicing black magic, but it was all "mass hysteria." They say there is no proof of real witchcraft? Please tell me what would classify as proof, in a time with no video cameras, ect...? Many wrote of witchcraft as a real thing, and yet we throw out those writings as false interpretations, when meanwhile they are the only possibly form of proof of real witchcraft available. The point is not that they were all real witches, but that we cannot assume they were not. What starts to become frustrating is when people who call themselves Christians or Catholics are still those who don't believe in witchcraft.
