Sept. 27, 2017 | Abby O'Neill -- Reggae has long been the most vivid musical escape for me. Its soul-cleansing riddims always feel familiar and cozy, like rushing into your lover's arms after a significant time away. This is especially true for roots reggae, whose staccato guitar licks, billowing bass, and sonic splashes on a canvas of negative space, are like salve for the soul. The mid-tempo pulse varnishes heads with Kool-Aid grins and daydreams of living beachside amid nature's unrestricted beauty.
Given all that, you can understand why I've been obsessed with Chronixx lately. At a time when dancehall has been dominating the Jamaican soundscape, its refreshing to hear the man born Jamar McNaughton carrying the roots-revival torch for a younger generation and expanding upon the footprint left by his world-renowned predecessors.
Chronixx and his band Zincfence Redemption paid a long-awaited visit to the Tiny Desk to perform three songs from his sophomore album, Chronology.
Set List:
"Skankin' Sweet"
"Majesty"
"Spanish Town Rocking"
Musicians:
Jamar McNaughton "Chronixx" (vocals); Evan Mason (keys); Stephen Coore (guitar); N'Namdi Robinson (guitar); Hector Lewis (percussion); Adrian Henry (bass); Oliver Thompson (drums)
Credits:
Producers: Abby O'Neill, Niki Walker, Morgan Noelle Smith; Creative Director: Bob Boilen; Audio Engineer: Josh Rogosin; Videographers: Niki Walker, Tsering Bista, Morgan Noelle Smith, Bronson Arcuri; Production Assistant: Jenna Li; Photo: Claire Harbage/NPR.

When I come across new music that I like, regardless of the colour of the skin on the people playing it, I just listen to it. I find the visual tag of the musicians often tags them to genres, and that, I think, has had a negative effect upon the music itself. America has coined a phrase that I find deeply offensive, I think it's called, "Cultural Misappropriation". If it's misappropriated, then presumably you can't hear any difference between donor Culture and receiving (other cultural) misapprpriator. The greatest blues musicians of the early 1950's would turn in their graves to hear musicians argue ownership of a musical style or, genre, or type of sound. There are musicians in all ethnic races, and all ethnic races have musicians with interest in the music of others. Those who play a type of music best, will inevitably float to the top. That's just music, it's not cultural, its just difficult. It (i.e. Music) sounds shit if a bad player slaughters it and it sounds like a window to heaven when played by an adept. Also, refering to colours as beautiful is misappropriation of colour. Black is the absence or antithesis of colour. What it certainly isn't (in a colour setting rather than as a skin-tone) is "Beautiful". People are never black as far as I can see, and differentiating them is usuallu hapless at best and down-right racist at worst. People have names, so why refer to them as a (often very imprecise) skin colour?

The only music that plays to the heart and not the brain. The sounds of reggae is the music of the Devine. It will comfort and uplift the oppressed around the world. In the end, it will show that reggae music has been the soundtrack of liberation from evil. Blessings to my country man Chornixx.
