Welcome to my Chrono Trigger review!
Chrono Trigger was a game released just before my time. I started playing RPGs at the age of 7 with Final Fantasy 7 being my very first game of the Genre. I grew up with a Sony PlayStation rather than a Super Nintendo so I never had the opportunity to play this gem.
Over the years growing up I would always hear from slightly older kids about how amazing Chrono Trigger was but unfortunetly I just simply didnt have a way to play it. Chrono Trigger would eventually come to the Nintendo DS as well as the PlayStation but by the time that happened I already had a PS2 and never really got into handheld consoles.
After all this years I was finally able to play through Chrono Trigger in 2019 and I wanted to share my thoughts. I realize that Chrono Trigger is a fairly popular title but I know that there is a demographic of folks out there like me that grew up with the Final Fantasy PSOne trilogy as their entry into the genre so this video is geared mostly towards people that fall into that catagory.
That said, if you enjoyed this video stick around because I plan to cover every single PSOne JRPG ever made!
#ChronoTrigger #ChronoCross #ps1jrpgs
Chrono Trigger (クロノ・トリガー Kurono Torigā?) is a console role-playing game developed and published by Square for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1995. It is the first game in the Chrono series. The game's story follows a group of adventurers who travel through time to prevent a global catastrophe. Square re-released a ported version by TOSE in Japan for the Sony PlayStation in 1999, later repackaged with a Final Fantasy IV port as part of the Final Fantasy Chronicles in 2001.
Chrono Trigger takes place in a fictitious alternate timeline of Earth. The characters have to travel through time to battle enemies, make friends, gain allies, gather equipment, and obtain magic for their quest. The time periods the characters travel range from 65,000,000 B.C. at the dawn of civilization to 2300 A.D., a post-apocalyptic time period. The party gains access to the period known as the End of Time (represented as the year ∞), which allows them to travel to other time periods. The party eventually acquires a machine capable of time travel, known as the 'Wings of Time', renamed 'Epoch' by the party. This craft is able to warp between time periods without the party having to go through the portals located at the End of Time.

I just bought a $67 copy sealed of CHRONO TRIGGER (DS) because of you! Your channel is a hidden gem brotha! Thanks for such a majestic view of games and just the 90's aesthetic of your channel is epic! As a guy born in 92 completely slipped Chrono trigger! What a shame :( love DQ and Drangon ball, z etc and FF games! Thanks again dude! Just subbed!

I have a 3DS and I bought physical copies of all 3 Castlevania games for it because a) its authentic and b) like you said physical > digital c) resale value. But it cost me like $180 for all 3 and if they gave me the choice of buying digital i would have. I have a lot of PSOne Classics like SOTN and Strider 2 on digital and i saved sooooo much money that way.

The sad thing about gaming is how noone in the gaming industry paid attention to the love and dedication that this team put into their game. They crafted something truly amazing for gamers. They made multiple endings, amazing music, new game plus, different outcomes for situations, side quests. Now, companies will make a bare bones game for full price and then charge you to add on the rest of the game and we actually pay them for it. I wish a single gaming company still had integrity. And now I feel old.

From what I understand from an interview I watched of one of Square Enix's main crew (for the life of me, I cannot remember who specifically it was) they stated games genuinely were "better" in the late 80's to the middle-to-late 90's. It has nothing to do with the talent of the team. It has to do with dedication, and that isn't to say that the creators nowadays are not dedicated. I'm paraphrasing, but he said,"the technology was so limited during that time period, the game HAD to be good. There were not graphics to fall back on, or powerful gaming systems capable of doing anything you can imagine. To truly tell a vivid, imaginative story on low pixel hardware, it is a baseline requirement to think outside of the box. It is bare minimum."

My dad got me my copy from a flea market in 97. Popped into my SNES and started a new game plus from someone who came before me. Looking back now I find it surprising that they had the game 100 percented because at the time, word-of-mouth was the popular walkthrough. Over the years, playing it off and on, I understood more and more of the game and story as my brain and education developed. The whole process has CEMENTED this game in my mind as pivotal to my journey through this hobby.

I just finished playing the PC port for the first time. I heard it's identical to the DS version, since it included Lost Sanctum. I've only heard of this game in passing, people considering it a "classic" now, and I bought it with zero knowledge of what it was about. What a ride of a game: Soundtrack is beautiful. Every time I thought I reached the end, it kept throwing a new plot point at me. 😂 The combat took a little getting used to, but being able to choose multiple techs in real time made the fights immersive. Antiquity was such a cool part for me, and the anticipation of Lavos always filled me with dread. And now I need to explore the different endings. I'm surprised to hear that it actually wasn't crazy popular in the U.S. upon release, but the fact that people finally caught on with the DS launch and have fans incoming now. Just shows how far ahead of its time this game was regarding storyline and art. The U.S. in 95 wasn't ready lol

Ive heard about the game for uears and never took its reputation all thqt seriously until I played it. I think my favorote part is how innocent feeling the plot was but then the game was also super complex as far as the timeline goes. Its like your able to dig deeper and deeper into the story if you want. When your ready to put the game down and call it done I higjly siggest watching some videos talkong about the chrono trigger timelines. Crazu stuff.

People who say this game was a critically acclaimed hit and commercial success when it was released in 1995 obviously were not around then. The game was a dud and a flop sales wise from the day it was released and I know because I was around then and played video games and bought my SNES the day it was released in the U.S. There was a magazine back then put out by Nintendo called Nintendo Power. This magazine reviewed all the new games. Chrono Trigger was a Super Nintendo game and when it came out it wasn't even featured on the cover of Nintendo Power magazine. A game called Donkey Kong Country was on the cover. I bought Chrono Trigger the first day it was released at a Toys R Us store. There were only 3 people there before the store opened waiting to buy the game and I was one of them. For comparison when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the Super Nintendo came out there was a line 2 blocks long outside that same Toys R Us to buy that game. Almost nobody played RPG's in the early to mid 90's when those games came out for the Super Nintendo. I remember a guy who worked in the video game dept. of a Toys R Us telling me the games which sold the least were Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy 3 and Secret of Mana. I remember large stacks of those games in the original boxes behind the counter in the display case unsold. And no difference at the Captron World of Nintendo stores which were in malls and sold SNES games. The manager of the local Captron store told me that Chrono Trigger was the poorest selling Super Nintendo game ever. He said he hated when Nintendo released another RPG because he said almost no one bought games like Final Fantasy 3, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana and Breath of Fire. He said the only game in that genre that ever sold any was Legend of Zelda Link To The Past and it was just an average seller and no big deal. I understand Chrono Trigger was a big hit in Japan for the Super Famicom but here the game was a dud and a flop and sold next to nothing. I know the game sold poorly because a few years later game stores had used SNES games for sale cheap and the used games were for sale as carts but Chrono Trigger was for sale sealed in original box which means there were a lot of unsold new sealed copies of that game out there. In 1996 after the SNES went out there were tons of sealed box Chrono Triggers for sale at used game stores for $5 or less and no one bought them. Also there was no merchandise for the game released in the U.S. when the game came out in 1995 . Which shows Nintendo did not care to promote the game here. No trading cards, shirts, posters, figures, nothing. The popular SNES games had various merchandise released along with the games. Chrono Trigger had nothing. So when these reviewers rave about this game and say it was a big deal and critically acclaimed hit when it came out they were not around in 1995 when the game came out . I was and the game was a very poor seller and was not the big deal these people say it was. It was a dud and a big flop in sales.

Stew Tube - I remember when the game was released here in 1995 very few gamers bought the game and played it. I remember the manager of the local Captron World of Nintendo store telling me Chrono Trigger was the worst selling SNES game. I bought the game the day it was released and I didn't know any other local gamers who had it and played it. There were a couple of other people in addition to me who bought the game at the Toys R Us the day it was released but I didn't know them.

I somewhat disagree about the game not delving into flashback/back story.. Yea, not for Crono. He's supposed to be a blank slate for the player, so he's just some unremarkable local kid. But Frog, for example, gets a couple of flashbacks, and a later resolution quest. There's a whole section of the game that, while crucial for the current party's plot and adventure, pulls double duty as Magus' extended backstory and motivation. Lucca gets the playable flashback about her mom. If you mainly meant that in regards to the protagonist, then my mistake for the misread! What I will say is genius about Chrono Trigger is how these sequences are often interwoven with the quest so they don't feel like narrative fluff. See my mention of Magus above. His story is synergistic with Frog's, and the conflict ends with us accessing Zeal to learn more about him as well. It builds the story rather than interrupting it. I wouldn't say there AREN'T side quests though. While you want to do them for ultimate weapon unlocks, the final round of resolution quests are optional side quests. It's just that the game reserves side quests for things you want to do with your party, not so much chores done for minor NPCs for a small reward like every other game. Tldr this comment is my brain dump and attempt to add to the convo! Not a straight up disagreement /argument. Hope that comes across. Great vid! I'm going to sub your channel 😊

No worries buddy I appreciate your thoughts! I think the point I was getting at was at first I was turned off by the silent protagonist aspect of the game but it ended up working great because they wrote the story from the perspective of us the player being Chrono and experiencing the story from his point of view mostly Thanks for the sub!

There's surprisingly a really good selection of 90s era jrpgs on Android. Chronotrigger is a super popular jrpg from the super Nintendo. So it's a good place to start. It sort of has a dragon ball z vibe to it. There's really two different genres of jrpgs fantasy and Sci Fi chrono trigger is definetly a fantasy jrpg with dragons and magic and stuff like that. Great Review, I'm thinking of starting Chrono Trigger on DS (snagged a copy last year, cost a pretty penny) since I've heard that's the best Version overall (have had it on PSN for PS3/PSP/PSVita for a few years as well though) but am really interested in giving it a go after I'm done with the Live A Live HD-2D Remake. I believe the Director for Live A Live (in his directorial debut) went on to do Chrono Trigger and I can totally see the influence for the Time Travel coming from Live A Live... Talking about a hidden gem that every JRPG Fan should play but likely missed, Live A Live was only released in Japan officially until the Remake (which came out last Friday on Switch) only took us 28 YEARS or so but we finally got it 😂

I've always appreciated Chrono Trigger but it never resonated with me the same as FF VI, which to this day remains my favorite game of all time, except for maybe Everquest, but that's a different genre. If I'm honest, I liked Earthbound, FF IV, Super Mario RPG much better. I guess I've just never understood the fascination with Chrono. Hell, it still beats FF VII and FF VIII and most of the PS1 era easily though. Edit: it has been about 25 years since I played Chrono Trigger all the way through so I really should see into scheduling that.

Was trying to see if the iOS version would be worth the time and it appears it does. I will note that while this review was on Chrono Trigger, the only other game that comes to mind that shares this same styling in graphics and story telling (aside from the aforementioned FF series) was Super Ninja Boy, had a very similar world map that would lead you into random battles much like with Pokémon when it comes to catching Pokémon in the wild.

I've owned four physical copies of this. The Final Fantasy Chronicles PS1 collection, the DS version (Which I still own) and two SNES copies (The first got thrown away by mistake when my family moved in 99) I love this game. Lucca is probably my favorite SNES RPG female party member. Chrono Cross spoilers I doubt I will ever entirely forgive whoever decided her fate in Chrono Cross and that is among the many reasons I like Cross less then Trigger.

My first experience with Chrono Trigger was with the ps1, I wanted Chrono really bad when it came out but games back then were very expensive, back in the early 90's games had diffrent prices. Chrono Trigger had a $99.99 price tag at Toys R Us, but I've had every version there is since then excluding snes. Having ps1, DS and android version . It's my favorite RPG of all time and back in the early 2000's a guy was remaking it with modern graphics (ps2 graphics back then) but squaresoft cut that fan made project. Would really love to see a modern remake of this game that may look like dragon quest 11. Edit: if you love this game I recommend "secret of evermore" it came out for the same time this one did and the one I got since it was cheaper, $69.99 at Toys R Us. The battle system is more like secret of mana but the story is really good.

Just a heads-up to give credit where credit's due: you mentioned that Nobuo Uematsu is the composer of the game, which is technically true, that he does provide some of the score. However, you did not mention the game's main composer: Yasunori Mitsuda, who composed around 50 of the game 60 or so compositions, and because of burnout, Uematsu was brought in to supplement the score of the game.

How do you get Super Gato to appear at the Millenial Fair so you can fight him and get that fantastic item for defeating him? At the fair you fight Luccs's robot Gato for silver points. After you defeat him he gives you 15 silver points and asks you "Now wasn't that fun?" There is supposed to be a way to get him to follow that with a yes or no answer. If you answer no then Gato replies then you can fight my big brother and another robot comes out of the tent in the upper right hand corner. This Super Gato has a ton of hit points and you don't have the ability to beat him at this point in the game. But he says beat me and I will give you the warp ring. This ring allows you to warp to different areas of the game and access a secret area not in the usual game. To get Gato to give you the yes or no answer after you defeat him you have to speak to the guy just before you come into his area, the guy who mentions you can fight Lucca's robot for silver points, speak to him 16 times then go to the guy who exchanges 50 gold for 10 silver points and do that exchange 16 times. So make sure you have the max 200 silver points because after you do the silver exchange 16 times you have 40 silver points left. Take the 40 silver points and go to tent of horrors and bet your 40 silver points on the mimicking game. You have to do it perfect then instead of getting a clone for a reward the guy says fight Gato. Go back and fight Gato and when you defeat him he gives you the yes or no selection after he asks you if you had fun. I have done all this but Gato gives you no yes or no answer. All this was in a Japanese Video game magazine when Chrono Trigger was released there. Maybe it only works on the Super Famicom version. But the magazine mentions there is a time limit on doing all this. and maybe I have not been able to do it all fast enough. Then there is the problem of beating Super Gato. If it is impossible because of the low level you are at in that point of the game then use PAR code to go up enough levels so you can beat Super Gato.

Yall led me to believe this was an RPG that GOD made himself. So i went in with high expectations, it didnt come CLOSE to meeting them and im quite fair. Its quite standard all around the board but does have charms. I like the battle style, the sprites are actually not great, they are fine, the sound fx even for the day, arent the best, the story is a convoluted MESS. But i do like its open nature, i hate its back tracking and the charecters arent likeable, like at all im not sure how people rate this thing so high. Dont get me wrong, its good, i am now a fan and see its importance but its a decent 7-7/10 over all and there are much better jrpg's out there. I just dont see the God created masterpeice that you people do but thats okay, im sure i like something you dont understand.

I am going to argue, by the numbers, it seems clear that only the minority of players playing the ps1 re-releases of the final fantasy games were playing them all for the first time. A simple under-sung aspect of the game is the perfectly used in battle info bar. Concise information that always declared the element of the effect or attack. Also, glen and robo and aylas stories were all full of flashbacks. Lucca's story had a major flash back you play through...? Most everybody in most every review examines the story telling structure of chrono trigger to death. 2/3 of what you are claiming in this video is completely baseless.
