Chronos doesn’t totally shed it’s VR veneer, but the simplicity of it’ roots make it an inviting, uncomplicated option for fans of Souls-likes and RPGs.

I hate that they keep talking about this game as if it game out after remnant, this game was designed years before remnant. It's not reusing remnant's enemy types, remnant re used the enemy types from this game.

The original game just called Chronos came out before From the Ashes, so technically the areas are new, just we revisited them in From the Ashes, it's just the rather strange scenario of the "sequel" coming out before the 1st game so too speak, due to Chronos being a VR game, and Before the Ashes coming out after From.

Remnant was actually a sequel. Chronos BTA is an enhanced port of a VR game in response to people wanting a way to play it without VR. Remnant added guns.

Ah now i understand, its a rework from VR rather than a prequel as "new' this is why people are so confused because we know only Remnant as the first game but the story seemed half assed so Chronos makes a lot of sense to the whole story as it may not seems great but it will be great to know how it all started with people that doesn't have VR

This is the prequel to remnant. So you should play this first then remnant.

If your really interested in the story and lore of Remnant I'd recommend you do get this although at a reduced price. Chronos was actually released before Remnant, but was a VR only and being VR meant it had a smaller market and thus smaller budget. Chronos Before the Ashes is just a non VR port of Chronos. The gameplay is kind of clunky and it's a fairly short game, but it kind of explains a lot about Remnant's story and lore and it's very apparent the events of Chronos have a big impact on Remnant. The heroes mission in Remnant initially was to find out what happened to the hero of Chronos who went missing. A lot of things make way more sense in Remnant if you play Chronos first.

It's not actually a Prequel. Chronos was originally a VR game and as you can guess being a VR game not many people played it. Remnant From the Ashes is a sequel to Chronos. The whole story of Remnant starts with your character looking for the lost Hero of Chronos. Chronos Before the Ashes is just a non VR port of the original Chronos. Which they renamed and released riding on the popularity of Remnant.

Combat needs polish. What made Remnant fun was the power trip of blasting away at hordes of enemies with fun and powerful guns in a souls-like in strange worlds. The melee weapons of Reamnant though weren't its strength, the start of the game is designed to teach you that unless you were ready to go wild melee is a bad idea. There needs to be much more if Cronos wants to avoid feeling like Lords of the Fallen, fortunately they've got a good base to work up from already

Chronos Before the Ashes isn't a Prequel to Remnant from the Ashes, but a non VR port of Chronos which was the predecessor to Remnant. They basically took that older VR game and made a non VR port of it likely as a quick cash grab to ride on the success of Remnant. I'd only recommend buying Chronos if your interested in the lore and story of Remnant, but beyond that don't expect much of what you got in Remnant which is a radically different game than Chronos.

It's not a prequel to Remnant. Chronos came out years before Remnant, but was only on VR. So it didn't have much of a budget and was kind of obscure. They took the setting of that game though and made the now more famous Sequel Remnant From the Ashes. Chronos Before the Ashes is just a non VR port of that original VR game. The gameplay it dated though and only really competed on the smaller VR market when it came out. Chronos Before the Ashes is really more there for those interested in the story and lore of Remnant than the actual gameplay.

wanna do a good playthrough. go str build with Krell Hammer and krell shield. you can stagger enemies a lot even with the quick attacks.i ended up my first playthrough with 100 strength 36 vitality age 26 and the krell hammer +5.

It's a shame that they didn't rework it better for flatscreen modes. In VR, Chronos is one of the most amazing games you can play. Chronos is literally what got me into Remnant, not the other way around. But what a pity this one is.

i've just reached the Labyrinth, as i write this. Chronos Beofre the Ashes, to me... is the game that resonates with me most, compared to other adventure games. the ending isn't particularly favourable... but my head-canon is what allowed me to overlook it and buy the game. it resonates with me because of three reasons: *1) it's simplicity.* you're a simple warrior, armed with a simple sword and shield; and your objective is to slay a dragon. *2) it's difficulty.* i always wanted to know what a souls-like game felt to play... and now i know. the difficulty made me approach different enemies in different ways: "do i approach shield raised, do i rush it, or do i use the hit-and-run tactic?" *THIS* is the challenge i've been searching for! *3) it's puzzles.* along with difficulty, i also wanted a game that tested my intelligence, and Chronos did just that, most of the time. i didn't solve *all* of the puzzles unaided. i had to look up where all 4 Dragon Hearts were located (there's only 4, and i was worried i would never be able to access them again), how i could obtain Rare Dragon Shards and how to get passed certain puzzles - 3 or 4 times for that last one, if i remember (i hope i don't have to look up anything again). but i did find all 4 Stones all by myself, and i've solved the rest of the puzzles on my own. this is how i want my intelligence to be tested. to sum up: Chronos Before the Ashes is the game where i was a simple warrior, armed with sword and shield, sent on a quest to slay a dragon; that made me think about how to approach enemies and use my intelligence to solve puzzles. Chronos Before the Ashes is in my top 5 games.

@@kyler247 true but the simple combat, focus on timing, deadly small enemies and monstrous bosses, combined with a linear structure with checkpoints you’re sent back to when you die all add up to a game that fits in that category. This game is far closer to a souls game than it is to Doom or GTA or God of War or literally 95% of games.

If you look closely at the well designed and beautiful promo image of the game (which is in miniature as well) you will realize it has nothing to do with the actual game graphic. It's like the games which shows fcking amazing trailers with very well designed graphics, but when u be able to play it finally you see poop.

Most are, but in this game, your perspective was that of the distant camera. The camera's position in each room/scene was fixed, but you could freely look around in any direction, and you didn't even have to look at your character. It felt kind of like a storybook, if that makes any sense.

Chronos Before the Ashes is just a non VR port of Chronos released in 2020. I'd only recommend picking up Chronos Before the Ashes if you're really interested in the story and lore of Remnant. Remnant begins with your character looking for the main character of Chronos who went missing. A lot of things in Remnant make more sense after playing Chronos. Just don't expect the same kind of gameplay, or style in Chronos that you got in Remnant. Gameplay wise they're almost completely different.

Story is found through in game books you need to read and is interesting. Length is about 5hrs if your good 10-15 if you take your time and explore

I think the context for this game is kind of important. Chronos was a VR game that came out years before Remnant From the Ashes. Being VR meant a smaller market and thus smaller budget. The gameplay and design is also radically different from Remnant's. Chronos Before the Ashes is just a non VR port of Chronos. I would only recommend the game one at a reduced price. 20 bucks, or less in my opinion and I'd only recommend buying if your interested in the lore and story of Remnant. A lot of things in Remnant make more sense if you've played Chronos. The whole story of Remnant begins with you looking for the lost main character of Chronos.

Chronos release BEFORE Remnant, so a lot of enemies come from Chronos to the Remnant, not the opposite way around.

The game is actually not bad at all, it feels like Dark Souls a lot, it’s just way easier than DS from what I’ve experienced . And it’s basically what happened before Remnant . The game has some weird moments with the camera due to being a VR game in the first place but still a great little game .

@@IncFarmerPls They're not always "easier," per se, but there's Mortal Shell, God of War has easier modes, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has easier modes, too. The Surge may be harder or easier depending on your play style.

Last time I checked, remnant reused assets from chronos, not the other way around. Rereleases shouldn’t cause that much confusion for you, gamingbolt

This isn't a new game. It's a non VR port of Remnant's VR only predecessor Chronos. They likely had another team work on it and all they had to do was adjust the camera for the non VR setting. I'd only recommend this game at reduced price(no more than 20 dollars) and even then only buy it if your interested in the story and lore of Remnant from the ashes. The Labyrinth, Yaesha, the Guardians, the Root, Haarsgard, even Synge the Dragon first appear in Chronos and the story of Remnant begins with your character looking for the lost Hero of Chronos. If you don't care about any of that stuff then I'd recommend you pass it. You won't find very similar gameplay in Chronos.

@@thechadcruzaider7864 A lot of people don't seem to realize what Chronos Before the Ashes is and it seems like the marketing for this non VR port of Chronos was kind of deceptive. The gameplay is radically different and being a VR game with a much smaller budget that came out years before Remnant it's not going to be the same experience players found in Remnant. This port should have been sold for 20 bucks, or less in my opinion and only really there for people interested in the story and lore of Remnant.

They've ported this game to the actual generation and PC and now they're selling as a new and fresh game, because no one knew about it... This game came BEFORE Remnant, not after. Anyway, it's just bad.

Hmm, I was sorry I missed this because I don't care about VR and I was excited they were porting it to PS4. However, this looks super generic. I loved Remnant, but I don't know about this one.

^THIS comment is why vr owners hate it when NON vr owners ask for pancake versions of games built strictly for vr. Because when it happens they complain it's not good enough but can't be bothered to play it as it was intended.

I'd only buy this game if you're really interested in the lore and story of Remnant. Beyond that I wouldn't recommend it because it is a radically different game from Remnant.

I mean, Remnant was actually a sequel. Chronos BTA is an enhanced port of a VR game in response to people wanting a way to play it without VR.

It looks pretty... generic. I was looking forward to this since I played Remnant for dozens of hours. Now, I'm not so sure anymore. Also, it seems like it's only single player? I think I'll wait for a deep sale, or pass this game entirely unless they made some pretty significant changes.

This was originally a vr only game. This is just the same game without the vr component hence the lower quality. Still a solid title, it's easier than any other souls clone.

They have put a great effort in backgrounds and surroundings but the gameplay simply sucks. It is slow, it lacks combos and it is slow and one more thing IT IS SLOW.

Eh I wouldn't say that. It's not blood borne speeds and yeah sometimes it can be more of a waiting game (looking at you, krell) but overall the game is decently quick
