View more cause marketing ads like this at: causemarketing.com/ This "Buy American" style TV ad is further localized to Detroit, referred to in the commercial as Motor City. Urban images of Detroit appear gritty, which is positioned as a positive: "When it comes to luxury, it's as much about where it's from as who it's for." Detroit-native Eminem appears towards the end of the commercial, driving the Chrysler 200, a luxury car.

SCRIPT
Voiceover: "I got a question for you. What does this city know about luxury? What does a town that's been to hell and back know about the finer things in life? Well, I'll tell ya. More than most. You see, it's the hottest fires that make the hardest steel. Add hard work and conviction and the know-how that runs generations deep in every last one of us. That's who we are. That's our story. Now it's probably not the one that you've been reading in the papers -- the one being written by folks who have never even been here and don't know what we're capable of. Because when it comes to luxury, it's as much about where it's from as it is who it's for. Now, we're from America. But this isn't New York City or the Windy City or Sin City. And we're certainly no one's Emerald City."
Prominent Sign: Keep Detroit Beautiful
Eminem: "This is the Motor City. And this is what we do."
On-Screen Text: The Chrysler 200 has arrived. Imported from Detroit. Chrysler.com

Anyone who lived in the area when this came out can tell you, without a doubt, how uplifting the commercial was. Nobody expected it. Nobody knew it was coming. It just showed up on TV when the area and people were going through an incredibly trying time. Chrysler showed the rest of the world that while we were being beaten down and hurting, we would NEVER give up without a fight. Beautiful homes selling for $30,000 (not a typo) because people couldn't afford to keep them, luxury cars being sold for dirt cheap, etc. You couldn't even get a job at fast food because they weren't hiring. Things were bad, real bad! But, the spirit of the people persevered! Thanks, Chrysler!

I live in Toronto and I've been to Detroit many times over the decades. I only discovered the SOG/Eminem version recently. I watch it every day. It is truly moving, inspirational and delivers one powerful message. The creative, the shots, the talent, is remarkable...and I'm not religious. I also worked in tv advertising for 30 years and this spot is one of the best I've ever seen. I remember it 8 years ago and it still is powerful as ever. Congrats Detroit, you were down....far down....but never gone!

I drove the "new" Dodge Avenger rental car while my vehicle was in the shop. (Same body platform as the 200.) Same quality as my '96 Stratus I junked years earlier. Engine was sappy and had no get up and go. Transmission slow to shift and like the rest of the power train, refused to be rushed. The "brushed aluminum" trim was cheap plastic wrapped in tin foil. Brakes were APPALLING. Heavens Forbid if I needed to stop suddenly- I'd end up plowing through a single mother pushing a stroller, run over two kids playing ball in the street, and hit someone walking their dog before crashing into a fire hydrant and finally coming to a stop. Police Officer: "Sir, if you seen them in the road, why didn't you stop?" Me: "I DID. I hit the brakes, but they wouldn't stop the car!" (Points to tire marks two blocks long and burnt off brake pads left in the middle of the street.)

@Knight Ofthenight I don't think this video is being "dramatic," as you put it. This ad was not made to compare Detroit to your town. It is simply saying showing love to the people of Detroit and to uplift the people as they went through a major change in their city. I drive a Mustang that was built there and I am proud to drive a car built by my neighbours. I am from Canada, but still show love to the USA even through all the good and bad. As an ad I think it's very clever. I remember seeing it when it first came out and still enjoy seeing it today. DETROIT LOVE!

Yall r tripping im whipping a 200 exactly like the one in this video, 3.6 v6 300 hp. I currently have ngk spark plugs/ignition coils, flowmaster super 10 muffler and resonater delete, and the hptuners device and software to tune it to 93 octane in the near future. I plan on getting a ported lower intake and a ported throttle body before that. I can say unequivocally that this vehicle with the V6 NOT the shitty 4 banger sounds as badass as this commercial was.

I remember how poignant this commercial was at the time. The U.S. was trying so hard to recover from a horrible recession, everyone was broke, cities were crumbling, and people were legitimately scared for the future. I think everyone needed to see a bit of hope, and even just a new American car being sold gave some hope. The music from Eminem's song has that "build-up" effect that evokes a feeling of getting ready for something to happen, like change. It was just a magnificent ad.

He LOVED Chrysler and at the time he and my Mom did not have much money but he decided to buy Chrysler stock as soon as he could. To my knowledge the only other stock he had at the time was General Electric because he worked for that company! Thanks for the memories!

Was military for 13 years, three tours to Iraq and Afghanistan, got out because I had a heart issue that was electrical, came home to Detroit homeless, lived in my car while dealing with heart surgery, no family, worked my ass off after I healed, threw a blood clot in my lung from surgery and living in my car and not moving enough, survived that, and kept working my ass off, now I bought a house and I own my truck, I come back to this video after all the things I went through personally and I relate to Detroit on a personal level, like we’re the same. No one held my fuckin hand and I’ll never ask anyone for applause or atta boys, but let this be a damn good lesson to not give up and keep going no matter how bad it gets. All this by age 37, don’t get me wrong, I do get exhausted and wore out from the other foot dropping but I kept going

I know this commercial is about Detroit and Chrysler, but I feel like this commercial represents the Midwest Rust belt blue collar cities. The cities hit hard by the auto industry or steel industry shutting down. I grew up in a town that GM factories were everywhere. They left. The town was knocked out, but we fought back. We aren't where we were or probably won't ever be, but we are tough people. Stand up Detroit. Stand up Anderson. Stand up Midwest.

The iconic voice for "Imported from Detroit" belonged to the late Kevin Yon who, as he said, became a "30-year overnight success" with this voice-over. The Chrysler commercial led to voice-work for Jim Beam, Major League Baseball, and broadcasts for the National Football League. Yon also was a writer and an actor in both films and on the theater stage. He died on October 21, 2018, at age 67.

I know someone who worked on this commercial and he said Eminem wanted the license plate on the car @ 1:10 to be a tribute to Brittany Murphy who starred in his movie “8 Mile” as his love interest. The plate is EI9023D. Printed backwards (as if Brittany looking in a mirror) it’s D3209IE. Here’s how the tribute breaks down…. D = Died 32 = Age when Brittany died. 09 = She died in 2009 I = Idyllic (means extremely pleasant and beautiful) E = With Love Eminem How do we know this is true? Why else would they waste time/effort showing a license plate during a Super Bowl commercial? They never show license plates at all during car commercials. It has a special meaning. If the Detroit Lions will the Super Bowl in 2024, this will come full circle. All of America will be rooting for the Detroit Lions. It is time for Resilient Detroit to show what is made of.

A brilliant ad. It's only shortcoming is the actual product it was supposed to promote. Chrysler should have made this commercial about the brand itself rather than the 200.

I don’t think there’s one specific thing, that’s what makes it such a great commercial -Narrators voice and context/delivery of lines -Eminem -Using “lose yourself” as the background -Context of the state of the country when the ad was released -Background shots of Detroit -The choir at the end in the theatre

Stalin reportedly told FDR that "Detroit is winning the war" in 1945 and in 1950 it was the 5th largest city in the country. It's not even close to its former glory, but it will never die. We've already "been to hell and back".

Yeah Detroit is not what it used to e but it it is still relevant because that is where American cars started being produced. And owing a car is quintessential American; its woven deep in the American culture and life. So much so that they say that in a recession "if Detroit is crying then the USA economy is screaming"
