This was an excellent video !!! I am setting-up to do one of these, for a client, but until now, I was not aware the valves could be bent when the belt breaks when the engine was running while the timing belt broke... So that will substantially raise the price of the repair - of this 17 y.o. car, with well over 87k. Miles... Which, actually saved me a heck of a lot of $ and headaches by informing the client of the extra damage to the engine, by waiting until the belt broke, before replacing it.... The client can now have me look at the other car they want to replace this one with.... 👍

Finally finished the re-do on my engine, and I found out how to make that huge mounting plate easy to get back in. This is for the turbo version, and it literally took me about 90 seconds to get the plate and the power steering pump into position. In prep for this method, have your AC system evacuated. Sorry folks, I've done it that hard way too many times, and it's not worth the hours of frustration with those lines in the way. Also, you should disconnect your lower intercooler pipe from the intercooler, and cap it or put a clean cloth in the pipe. This pipe is after the air filter, and any debris will get stuck in the intercooler or get breathed by the engine. The solution for re-installing the mounting plate is to remove the high pressure AC line from both ends and take it out of the car, and disconnect the low pressure side from the top end so it can be swung out of the way. After the AC lines are out of the way, remove the rear bracket for the power steering pump, and unbolt the support bracket for the metal line to the power steering pump (this on the front of the engine, down low towards the middle). Once this is done, you can raise the left side of the engine high to put the mounting plate in position (make sure the pump reservoir does not catch on anything and crack while raising the engine). Once the plate is in position, lower the engine a few inches, position the remaining AC line so it is sticking up near the radiator and out of the way, and the power steering pump will have enough room the maneuver the pulley past the mounting plate tabs. With the plate in it's place and the power steering pump pulley on the correct side of it, you can reassemble everything else. These two extra steps require work, but it makes the most frustrating part of this job easy. PS: Note that you will need to re-install the high pressure AC line before bolting the power steering pump back in place, as the line runs under the pump.

The newer style tentioner sits on an aluminum bracket that can bend. If you find that the new belt tries to walk off the pulleys when you rotate the engine. The bracket is probably at falt. The idiler pully bolt needs to be installed before screwing it into the block. The tentioner will want to move the exhaust cam out of alignment so the exhaust cam should be advanced a tooth when putting the belt on

Thanks for the encouragement. Hubby is going to replace the water pump on my 2001 PT Cruiser, again. The last time was ten years ago when he had to do a head gasket replacement. It overheated on me at a stop light. He ended up replacing the radiator, which solved the overheating problem. He says it looked like Chrysler sized the radiator too close to the minimum coolant needed to do the job. Our old radiator was badly calcified and partly clogged. He says it'll be an all day job for him, being an amateur and hand tools only. He agrees with you about replacing the timing belt. If he decides to replace the idler and tensioner, are there any resources as to modifying the cover at home? All he says when I tease him about this is that he wished he had his Dad's old Chevy II with the "runs forever four banger" motor. I remember helping him work on the Ford Falcon van he was driving when we first started going out. That motor was between the front seats. Pull off the big box top and there everything was.

*This is a NON-INTERFERENCE engine. At 10:30 in the video I said that it was an interference engine. In a non-interference engine, overhead valves can hit each other when the timing belt breaks if certain conditions exists (but it happens rarely) but cannot hit the piston tops. The interference engine does not have enough clearance between the valves and pistons tops so they will collide when the belt breaks.
@rachelblack3816
@rachelblack3816 6 жыл бұрын
If it IS an intereference engine and the timing belt breaks, the valves and piston *may* collide --- and they may not. The timing belt broke on my son's 2000 Honda CRV (interference engine) but nothing was damaged, he just replaced the timing belt and it was good to go. However, when the timing belt broke on my '94 (I think) Mitsu Eclipse with an interference engine, it *completely destroyed* the engine; all 4 pistons had holes punched in them, most of the valves were bent (I recall at least one was completely broken, and embedded in he top of one of the pistons), and some chunks of metal were torn from the head, so all that was left intact (guessing here) was the engine block itself. Because the transmission was already acting up, I had it towed off to the junk yard.

Thank you Chris for putting up this Video. I was removing my tensioner and realize that there was only one bolt holding it on. luckily I'm right across the street from the Tacoma Screw so I'm going to head over there and pick up the missing bolt tomorrow. watching your video made things go a lot smoother and I did a goof up and tried to remove the upper engine mount first but I quickly realized it was impossible to do it that way. seems like it was still in really good condition but I ordered a spare and I replaced it anyways. I still have to look up how to install the seals of the camshafts but I think they're pretty easy. have a good one and have a beer on me. Sent it to your Paypal. If I succesfully get my car running tommorow? I'll get you some more beer money! :-) Have a good one! -iMickey503

So I'm not positive but I'm kind of at that point right now with my replacement on the timing belt but before I hopefully you haven't already went and bought that boat or maybe you have and you realize now what the mistake was I think I made the same one I thought I'd lost a bolt to the tensioner but I've come to find out I believe I could be wrong still not a great mechanic but I believe that a bolt for the cast iron cover the top right one is actually the one that goes through the tensioner also so checking it out you may not have to buy that bolt I went and bought a six pack of them they're identical and I'd already installed one on the left side attention and use loctite so I wasn't able to pull it and turn it so get my money back but it's all good living you learn right

You know that PT is not the only car with this? 'Japaneese engineering' Subarus with boxer, like 2.0 Forester require taking the whole engine out for valve clearance adjustment. The same applies to some european cars with very tight engine compartments, like Renault minivans.

@@cytrynowy_melon6604 It's been happening tor years - Early Chevy Monza V6, I think - engine had to be raised to change #2 spark-plug. EB1 Civic - also very hard to separate engine and gearbox in the car.The engineers must laugh like drains when they design this stuff... Also Mitsubishi Mirage/Lancer, "83 - '88. The fifth gear would come loose, reducing the trans to a 4-speed. The factory fix? Put a removable plate on the end of the trans so you could reach in and tighten everything back up again. Surely it would have been easier to fix the fault???

Don't you have to remove the plastic backing plate to replace the pump? I don't remember it's been awhile since I did one. I think I was replacing the cam seals on this one too though so you definitely have to take the sprockets off for that. I Mark the belts on pretty much every car I do since I do so many different makes and models. It leaves zero room for error.

And if you have trouble getting that big bracket back in you have to take the top of the motor off it make's it a little better for ya.

Came across this video and really appreciated the straight to the point aspect of it. I had my clutch replaced and now i'm getting a P0344 code. Could the timing been thrown off when clutch was replaced? I'm considering changing the timing belt regardless and this video is the best reference I have found. If the answer is yes to my question then I have found my issue with my car. Thanks and you have a new subscriber.
@NoNonsenseKnowHow
@NoNonsenseKnowHow 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the sub! No, replacing the clutch would not affect the timing. The clutch is located between the transmission and the engine on the opposite side. Good luck on the repair, and I hope it takes care of your code. Before you remove the belt, verify the timing and see if it's off one tooth or anything like that

Good job! I'm about to do my 3rd. Own 2 PT's (both 2001), did a gates kit on the first only to have the gates pump fail after 10K miles and got to do it again. Time to do the first change on our 2nd 2001. Pretty sure I'll evac the ac this time - it's such a bear to do the timing belt otherwise. Using Airtex pumps now after that Gates failure. Surprised you didn't have to remove the intake to get clearance for jacking the engine up. Also you didn't have to undo the exhaust?
@NoNonsenseKnowHow

Hey very good video 👍 but I have a question I work on cars everyday all day sort of a backyard mechanic i know alot however what does this pin in the timing tensioner do exactly? and where do it go because i don't know if mine has one or not but I only want to do this once lol also the cams, up means up, correct ?
@NoNonsenseKnowHow
@NoNonsenseKnowHow 4 жыл бұрын
The new timing belt tensioner should come with a pin installed. Once you have the new belt in place and everything has been checked, the last step is to pull the pin on the tensioner and that's what sets the tension on the Belt. Definitely don't leave the pin in there. It's been a while since I did one of these, but I remember these tensioners are kind of weird since you have to clock them if I remember right. But the instructions should tell you more about that. they come with the timing belt kit
