In this video I'll take you step by step on how to replace the alternator on a 2012 Chrysler Town and Country 3.6L V6. This engine should be the same for 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016 V6 models, as well as for the 3.6L V6 Dodge Grand Caravan. Below are some of the parts and tools you may need along the way.
Alternator (Autozone gives a lifetime warranty on their alternators if you need one quick, but you can find them on amazon and rockauto.com for cheaper.)
amzn.to/3J46GKI
E7 Torx Socket
amzn.to/3iRkZHX
Continental Serpentine Belt (Now would be a good time to replace the belt while it's off.)

Thanks for the video. My alternator went out yesterday and it is beyond my family's means to take the car to a dealership or repair shop right now. I am a recovering stroke patient and get confused easily, but your clear and simple instructions enabled me to change my town and country alternator in 3 hours today. You guys that post this stuff are doing a great service. Thank you.

I just had to replace the oil cooler then the thermostat. During those repairs I soaked the alternator in coolant. So after hours and hours of work the alternator fails while me and the family are headed out of town. This video is a life safe. If you are reading this. GET THE WOBBLE SOCKETS AND THE FLEX HEAD RATCHET WRENCH. I did not and paid the price. Took me almost 4 hours. Also try to get a long socket wrench. Thanks a ton bro. I was this close to ending up on the news with the GD van.

Hi Tony, I feel like I just had to reach out to you to thank you on behalf of my family and I for this great tutorial. You literally saved us some serious money by sharing the process to replace the alternator. We had to replace our battery as well, so as you can imagine, we were in the hole for over $600 dls since we went with Autozone and their Lifetime warranty. Thankfully, we found your video and didn't have to worry about having to pay for installation. My wife and I followed your instructions and successfully completed the task at hand. Your video was truly a blessing. God bless you and your family. Much appreciated it! Greetings from the windy city, Chicago!

I started to do it the same way as the video but couldn't disconnect the wiring from the alternator so I went from the top to give me the room I needed. Once I did that, why go thru the bottom? So it cost me 2qts. of antifreeze,

Exactly what I needed 400 miles from home on a Sunday. Found your video when I was unable to remove alternator from the tight space. Older eyes didn’t pick up on the torx head studs, saved me a ton of frustration otherwise. My studs were actually E8, all three. Certainly would’ve been a mess without your straight to the point advice. Maybe list tools needed early to be the perfect video. Most grateful, thank you!

The Video was a Help!, but coming from underneath, laying on the hard ground, and Having to drop the AC compressor out of the way just to get enough room to remove the old alternator!, it was a Pain in the Butt!!!, having to remove the 2 studs on the AC Compressor was a pain, because the compressor lines were in the way, but after struggling for a while, I finally got it done!!!, So Thanks for the video!!!

I found this video very informative on the special tools required for the job. There's nothing worse than getting started on job like this and finding out in the middle of having everything apart that you don't have the right tools to complete the job. I am of the same opinion that I'd prefer to take the alternator out this way instead of the way my Haynes manual suggested, going from the top by disconnecting the radiator hose, draining some antifreeze, and taking out the radiator fan to have enough clearance to take it out. Too messy of a job, and more trouble than I cared to deal with. Thanks for the video!

Wow, I would have been brave enough to get the alternator loose had I tried this without your video, and likely thrown tools throw the wall trying to get it out without moving the compressor. I had no prior experience in the least with compressors and certainly wouldn't have been brave enough to move it like that without watching your instruction first! Thank you for saving me diagnosis and labor, which I'm sure would have been at least double the part or more. In 3 or so hours I had my wife's van apart and back together because you went through the trouble to post such a comprehensive instructional video. 1,000 STARS to you sir, thank you, thank you, thank you!!! (and a bonus 500 stars for the shortness and sweetness of the video too, instead of a 30 minute fast forward fest with all the excess talking I hear from other videos!)

Thanks for the good video that was professionally done, by that I mean there was not a lot of wasted talking and time on the video! Easy to follow the steps. I just changed the alternator the other day on my 2013 Grand Caravan from the bottom. Taking the alternator out from the bottom and from the top both have advantages and disadvantages, but either way it is not as easy as the older rear wheel drive cars like back in the 80s! Or even better yet back in the 50s!!~

Thank you so much! I just did this for my dad. The only issue I had was that Autozone only carried a deep well e7 and it hit the compressor line so I couldn’t get the bolt out. You need a short one. I also highly recommend a flex head ratcheting 13mm wrench, or universal joint or flex head ratchet. If you have the ability the right tools before starting you will breeze right through this!

Taking the rad fan out to access the alternator is a whole lot easier if you’re working on the floor with the van jacked up. This method of dropping the compressor would be ok working on a hoist as it avoids going up and down but lying on your back trying to get the compressor off is a non starter. Both ways you still need to remove the wheel and the plastic covers. Working at home as a DIY removing fan and pulling alternator out the top is the way to go.

you can get it from the top also without removing those studs. I found this to be the only way without disturbing the AC lines. You must drain the coolant and remove the upper stat housing (2 10mm) and pull the hose out of the way, pull the upper rad support (10 bolts, about 2 minutes with a nut driver) and then tilt the entire rad forward about an inch, this clears the AC lines. Pull the intake box and move the power steering reservoir over and then you can remove the 3 13mm alternator bolts and 2 harness connectors, slide it out and then up. I believe your method is probably how the stealership does it on the rack to not disturb the coolant or AC charge.

I did it the way you mentioned very recently. Maybe just over a quart of coolant removed which I put right back in with a paint strainer. Whole job done in less than 2 hours. Not bad at all.
