💖HD version: • Chu Chin Chow 1934 (up... 💖 Chu Chin Chow, a British musical film, is based on Chu Chin Chow (a stage musical) which draws its inspiration from Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves. I don't want to give away the plot, but Anna May Wong steals all of scenes in this film. Pearl Argyle, also a great beauty, was featured in this film as well.
The Gallery of Anna May Wong KZfaq Channel intends to educate and raise awareness of Anna May Wong, other classic film stars that are also people of color, Old Hollywood, The Silent Era & its Movies, Classic Film, Ethnic Studies, and the importance of analyzing the past, present & future of film and history.

Anna Mae Wong! So beautiful and talented...I wish she'd had more parts. When I think of all roles where white women played Asian roles...that could have been Ms. Wong. She was absolutely amazing. Thank you for this gem. 🌹♦️

Wonderful old movie, and although it not everyone's cup of tea it is a good movie to wind down and relax too after a hard days work in 2022

This British film was made during the period Wong spent in Europe. I found it interesting that actor Fritz Kortner, in certain angles, looks amazingly like actress Maria Ouspenskaya.

I have not watched the entire film and I still think some gentle period correct color would have brought a lot of the depth of the costumes and set into focus. Now if I'd seen it at the Roxy that might be something different I'm watching it on my phone.

If it had been made in America, Wallace Beery would have been perfect as the smiling villain Abu Hassan. Kortner has an amazing resemblance to Beery. Ali Baba could be played by Eugene Pallette or Herbert Mundin, and his brother's widow by Mary Boland (with some extra padding.) As it was, the only one I knew from the cast, besides Anna May, was Francis L. Sullivan as the Caliph. It was wonderful getting to see this version of the long-running play that also figures a little bit in Auntie Mame. That water dance near the beginning was spectacular.

Chu-Chin-Chow: isn't that the name, phrased by ''Aunt Mame and Vera Charles' in that little celebrator dance they do---re-living roles those two had in some club act? Vera's offer to employ Mame in the 'legitimate' theatre. As the two sang, '' Chu Chin Chow and how and HOW".....

Yes, according to IMDb, "Mame and Vera reminisce about being in the chorus of a show called "Chu Chin Chow." This musical show premiered in London in 1916 and in New York in 1917, about 10 years before the opening scene in Auntie Mame (1958). The show toured America for years. It was likely one of these touring companies in which the girls appeared." www.imdb.com/title/tt0051383/trivia/ Pretty cool reference! Auntie Mame is one of my favorite movies too!

Thank you for putting this in order. However, in 1934 it would be AWESOME to have Tiger Bay. I’d love to see it and apparently AMW has decent screen time and doesn’t play second to anyone. Please…

Hi Bobby, thank you for your request. Unfortunately, Studio Canal owns the copyright to Tiger Bay as well as Java Head, they don't allow those movies to be uploaded & shared on KZfaq. I did have Java Head up for a few months before it was taken down. Tiger Bay didn't pass the copyright checks. However, Goddess Anna May Wong (a friend of this KZfaq channel) has a video of it on their Facebook page; found here: facebook.com/GoddessAnnaMayWong/videos/tiger-bay-1934-full-movie/557905351386912/ And Java Head can be found on here: archive.org/details/java_head_1934

@@thegalleryofannamaywong Actually, thanks to your recco, I saw it (shhhh) on Facebook before your reply. Great to see her in more of a lead role. I liked it and thought it was in keeping with those short, but action-packed Paramount programmers of the period, like Island of Lost Men. Another programmer, which she would have been perfect for, would have been "Singapore Woman" which starred Brenda Marshall. But if only for the miscegenation laws.... It's too bad that she passed before Flower Drum Song. It would have been a big, juicy role for her.

I've only watched a few minutes to this movie and I don't know if I can take it I'm only watching it for Anna May Wong but this movie would be a little more interesting if it were we're colorized wouldn't? Now I'm going to stray a bit. I'm very old and that's what very old people do my mom used to take me to the Roxy when we came to New York to do shopping for my school every year it was a magnificent theater and I was living in New York whether they tore it down and I stood on Broadway weeping to see that beautiful theater destroyed it was a crime it was a sin probably wouldn't happen today most of the the movie palaces in New York are gone or made into churches not a damn one left and they wanted to tear down radio City music Hall to. I rambled enough and now I'll stop thank you very much for all talking to me you can beat me up about the color if you want.

@@thegalleryofannamaywong 0 I may not have explained myself very well I'm not suggesting that you colorize dark victory but something like 42nd Street which I've seen probably 500 times when you see it in color you get to see what people really look like you can pick them out in the dance numbers it's not just all the mishmash I certainly don't want most films colorized by any means. But there's a few dogs out there from Tiffany and so on that a little color soft color light help. Even sepia. Now you cannot kill me if you want I'm ready to take on all colors. Thank you

I’ve only watched the beginning so far, but it must be set in France, because of the Coneheads. Seriously it looks to be a mishmash of different cultures, but it is set in the world of Islam.
