Chuck Berry is one of the top 5 most important figures in rock history. His influence is heavily seen in The Beatles, Rolling Stones and Beach Boys and countless others. "Maybelline", " Roll Over Beethoven", "Rock And Roll Music, "Johnny B. Goode", among many more of his classics are among the greatest Rock recordings ever. If they had a " Mount Rushmore" of Rock & Roll, he would be on it.

Interesting fact: The common version of that song is actually censored for white people's comfort. When I saw Chuck Berry perform it live (twice) the reference to a "country" boy was changed to a different C word with racist overtones, turning a happy song about a guitar prodigy into a damning indictment of racism in the music industry.

@@debjorgo I agree. I still think of him as THE Chuck Berry, from having accidentally met and chatted with the man, long ago, when we lived in the same county. While he did this song later in life and I'm sure it was good fun, he isn't what people should think of as a novelty singer. This song was being recommended in the live stream awhile back and it's fine and all, but I thought then it was a bit of a shame that of all Berry's music, this could end up as the channel's intro to his work.

My Ding-a-Ling" is a novelty song written and recorded by Dave Bartholomew. It was covered by Chuck Berry in 1972 and became his only number-one Billboard Hot 100 single in the United States. Later that year, in a longer unedited form, it was included on the album The London Chuck Berry Sessions. Guitarist Onnie McIntyre and drummer Robbie McIntosh who later that year went on to form the Average White Band, played on the single along with Nic Potter of Van der Graaf Generator on bass. "My Ding-a-Ling" was originally recorded by Dave Bartholomew in 1952 for King Records. When Bartholomew moved to Imperial Records, he re-recorded the song under the new title, "Little Girl Sing Ting-a-Ling". In 1954, the Bees on Imperial released a version entitled "Toy Bell". Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts recorded it in 1961, and it was part of their live act for many years. Berry recorded a version called "My Tambourine" in 1968, but the version which topped the charts was recorded live during the Lanchester Arts Festival at the Locarno ballroom in Coventry, England, on 3 February 1972 by the Pye Mobile Recording Unit - engineered by Alan Perkins, where Berry - backed by the Roy Young Band - topped a bill that also included Slade, George Carlin, Billy Preston and Pink Floyd. Boston radio station WMEX disc jockey Jim Connors was credited with a gold record for discovering the song and pushing it to #1 over the airwaves and amongst his peers in the United States. Billboard ranked it as the No. 15 song for 1972. The song is based on the melody of the 19th-century folk song "Little Brown Jug". Bartholomew's 1952 version contains a Shave and a Haircut motif. The song tells of how the singer received a toy consisting of "silver bells hanging on a string" from his grandmother, who calls them his "ding-a-ling". According to the song, he plays with it in school, and holds on to it in dangerous situations like falling after climbing the garden wall, and swimming across a creek infested with snapping turtles. From the second verse onward, the lyrics consistently exercise the double entendre in that a penis could just as easily be substituted for the toy bells and the song would still make sense. The lyrics with their sly tone and innuendo (and the enthusiasm of Berry and the audience) caused many radio stations to refuse to play it. British morality campaigner Mary Whitehouse tried unsuccessfully to get the song banned. Whitehouse wrote to the BBC's Director General that "One teacher told us of how she found a class of small boys with their trousers undone, singing the song and giving it the indecent interpretation which-in spite of all the hullabaloo-is so obvious ... We trust you will agree with us that it is no part of the function of the BBC to be the vehicle of songs which stimulate this kind of behaviour-indeed quite the reverse." In Icons of Rock, Scott Schinder calls the song "a sophomoric, double-entendre-laden ode to masturbation".[6] Robert Christgau remarked that the song "permitted a lot of twelve-year-olds new insight into the moribund concept of 'dirty'". During a short spoken introduction to the song on the single, Berry refers to the song as "our alma mater". For a re-run of American Top 40, some stations, such as WOGL in Philadelphia, replaced the song with an optional extra when it aired a rerun of a November 18, 1972 broadcast of AT40 (where it ranked at #14) on December 6, 2008. Among other stations, most Clear Channel-owned radio stations to whom the AT40 1970s rebroadcasts were contracted did not air the rebroadcast that same weekend, although it was because they were playing Christmas music and not because of the controversy. Even back in 1972, some stations would refuse to play the song on AT40, even when it reached number one. The controversy was lampooned in The Simpsons episode "Lisa's Pony", in which a Springfield Elementary School student attempts to sing the song during the school's talent show. He barely finishes the first line of the refrain before an irate Principal Skinner pushes him off the stage, angrily proclaiming "This act is over!"

This performance was taken from The Chuck Berry London Sessions, evident from the reference to "the future Parliament is out there". Also, I have the LP of this concert, the only Chuck Berry album in my collection. And Brad is right on top of this one. A total double entendre, all the way. At the end of the second side of the album the stage announcer says "We want Chuck to play more but people are outside waiting to come in and see The Pink Floyd". THE Pink Floyd, interesting double bill.

I told you our generation was filthy. And Chuck started it all in the ‘50’s! The difference is, WE HAD FUN WITH IT 😁 Man, I remember one time, it was around the time this song came out, like 1972, and me and my family were coming back from one of my little league games, and we stopped off at the pizza place, and I put a quarter in the juke box, and played some Chuck Berry. It was this song. I hadn’t heard it before, but when it came on, the whole place was rolling on the floor, my parents were looking at each other cracking up, and here I am at 11 years old super embarrassed. But jeez Lex, EVEN I KNEW WHAT HE MEANT!! Rock on, Chuck, RIP - and then there was the time I saw Chuck at Louie’s Rock City and he invited the whole audience up on stage to dance, and the club tried to shut it down, but Chuck said he wouldn’t play unless people could dance on stage. So we danced on stage! RIP CHUCK UR THE GREATEST

It was a whole different era. This was when the FCC would try to make people like The Doors and The Stones change lyrics to appear on TV. The double entendre allowed him to sing about ding a lings because it was just "a cute little toy".

I was just reading about this song earlier today. Chuck Berry was not the first to record it but had the biggest hit with it. Some schools banned students from singing it and some radio stations refused to play it. His version was released in 1970 or 1971 but dates back to the 60’s.

This was his only number one record...his earlier albums are amazing and he was truly a revolutionary songwriter, performer and guitar player. A pillar of rock and roll and Americana.

I don’t care what anyone says, Chuck is the King of rock n roll! Chuck was rocking with the electric guitar while Elvis was still strumming chords on acoustic.

I heard from a big Elvis fan, that this song went to #1 on the record charts. An Elvis's record stalled at #2 and could never over take My-Ding-A-Ling.

Chuck headlined the first outdoor rock festival I attended. That was about fifty years ago, and just happened to be one of the longest, craziest nights of my youth. That's a different story of its own. I do remember that Chuck had the whole place dancing and singing along for his entire set.

Once I was swimming across turtle creek... haha, for some reason I've never forgot that verse, I could never remember the other verses but that one stuck, I've sang that to people over the years being goofy and no one knew it. Chuck Berry was one of the greatest!

This song was Chuck Berry's one and only #1 hit song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart back in early fall of 1972. It's amazing that this song was his one and only #1 hit song of his career. This man will always be one of the first black artists to hit it big in the rock and roll Era. RIP Mr. Berry

In the old days you couldn't say a lot of things on the radio. So people found ways around them. This was his way of poking fun of the rules and having fun at the same time.

This song has nothing to do with why Chuck Berry was great. Check out "Maybelline", "No Particular Place to Go", Johnny B Goode", "Sweet Little Sixteen", "Roll Over Beethoven" and a dozen or so others if you really want to find out why Chuck is considered one of the original rock and roll greats (if not the greatest of them all). "My Ding a Ling" was a weak attempt at a hit when he hadn't had one for a few years -- and it worked. Chuck was still a great performer here but past his prime as a creative force.

man.... I just loved Chuck.... this cut is from the 'london berry sessions'... and my cousin had a copy and we listened to it over and over... The live version is so cool... but I did hear it many years before with the studio version... Chuck Berry IS rock n roll... yes there were others who were important.. but Chuck wrote Jonny B Goode... as well as Maybeline and so many others that wrre classic..

Nice reaction. The first line of the song is how he got it past the censorship boards. Hey, I am just singing about a bell. You're the ones with the dirty minds. For everyone else it's a song about playing with your private part. Brad you totally got the song. It's fun song. What was cut out there. Was he asked the audience to those parts. Chuck Berry a rock star in every sense of the word. He would hire locals to play the other band parts. A true legend.

My favorite song when I was four. This was a hit, btw. On the radio, 1972. Which is how I knew it. Didn't hear too much new stuff from old Chuck again until round the time he was being awarded lifetime-achievement statues in the 80s. Look guys, the 70s were a hard, weird time. People needed outlets. Hence ... (gestures toward the video)

He meant it to be naughty the whole time. The only way he could get away with it was to say it was silver bells on a string…… it’s just a fun little song. Such a great memory, when I was 10 or so, we went in a Boy Scout family trip to Disneyland. We were all packed on two huge buses. One on the 20 somethings on the bus lead us all in singing this song on the bus. Luckily my parents were on the other bus. Lol. My mother would not have approved. It was 1981, I was 10, and I had no clue it was about anything more than bells. I just knew it was a lot of fun.
