lp.constantcon... Was There Ever a Chance of a Real Three Dog Night Reunion? Chuck Negron Explains
Everybody loves a great reunion. In Rock and Roll there are so many missed chances for band members to bury the hatchet, join hands and sing kumbaya down the yellow brick road but we all know that's a hard task and a hard pill to swallow for rockers who sometimes hate each other. Sure their music was great but their relationships? Not so much.
Three Do Night broke up in 1975 after garnering 21 Top 40 hits. Cory Wells sang lead on 8, Chuck Negron on 7 and Danny Hutton on only 2. The group shared vocals on 4 of their hits. Negron sang some of their biggest hits like, “ Just an Old Fashioned Love Song,” “The Show Music Go On,””One” and their biggest “Joy To The World.” By the time broke up he was dealing with a serious addiction to drugs and he didn't come clean until 1991.
Negron rejoined the group in the early eighties but was gone again 1985 - he hasn't been back since. Fans however were always wishing for a reunion with the three main singer but with Cory Wells passing in 2015 that dream has died. I asked Negron when was the last time the band came close to a reunion? (9B)
From talking to Negron it's clear that he and Danny Hutton are not close and haven't been for a long time, even going back to their first hit “One” in 1969. CLIP 10
The 4th Edition of Chuck Negron's popular book “Three Dog Nightmare,” including 11 never before published chapters is available at ChuckNegron.com. All copies are signed by Chuck. - by John Beaudin

My two cents for what it is worth is that Danny was envious of both Cory and Chuck as they both had the biggest and most hits. Danny was stuck at number 3 in the band. With Chuck out it moved him up to number 2 and he preferred that. As with most bands egos start getting in the way…. Chuck was very good but the whole drug/drinking thing really took a toll on the band. Not that Cory and Danny were perfect but they didn’t hit bottom like Chuck did. It is what it is, just thankful that they gave us some great songs that have been stuck in my head my whole life. For this we should be thankful for. RIP Cory…

Danny's problem was that he apparently envied the two most gifted lead singers, Chuck and Cory. Danny did a marvelous job as founder, arranger, producer and singer of harmony, especially the lower third part which is the most difficult to sing. A smarter Danny would have overtly featured and supported the other two, taken more pride in those roles where he did excel (and are every bit as important as lead vocals) and then continued to cry all the way to the bank, business as usual.

All three reunited in the early 80's, I was fortunate to see them several times, before Chuck was gone. You talk about some great shows, especially when the late, great Cory Wells let loose on "Try A Little Tenderness." Although, I saw them after Chuck left, and still loved Cory, yet I longed for all three dogs--- just one more time.

I saw 3DN @ the Canyon Club in Agoura and when I ran into Danny backstage and asked if there was a chance of a reunion with Chuck his response was smug and contemptuous even after all of these years. I thought that show sucked (and I record live music as a hobby) and was so underwhelmed that I didn't even save that recording. That's how bad they were. Currently there's only one of the original members (Danny) in the band and I'm betting cover band's sound better than them.

Three Dog Night did re-unite in the 1980's, on July 5, 1981 they were part of The Beach Boys TV coast to coast in stereo broadcast from the Queen Mary in CA. They sounded amazing !! Wolfman Jack introduced them. Their 1983 EP album " It's A Jungle " was released . Every song on it was good. They were supposed to tour with John Kay & Steppenwolf, but ego's got in the way and the bands couldn't agree on billing

Maybe he didn't like that, but I'm sure they all made their millions. I think it's amazing that Chuck finally got clean after all those years. I wish him the best. It sounds like life is good for him right now. As far as a reunion, shit happens. Band members fight, have issues. I don't blame Chuck for not going back. I love Chuck. Great guy and talent. I will say, however, I knew a guy very well who was working (promoting) Chuck during the 1990s and he told me that Chuck would undercut himself. He said that Chuck screwed up the reunion and that there was another project involving a proposed duets album where artists and fans of Chuck would duet with him. As it was told to me by this mutual friend, one of those artists was Garth Brooks when Garth was at his zenith. Long story short...the opportunity for that Garth and Chuck record failed to materialize due to creative differences. Hope I remember that story correctly. Chuck remains a childhood hero and Til the World Ends is one of my Top 5 songs EVER!

It had nothing to do with respect for Chuck as a singer. Chuck was a heroin addict and his behaviour was tearing the band apart. Yes, there were other factors, but that was the big one. Lobo Blue TDN sounded and performed flawlessly without Chuck in the '80s. Didn't miss a bear with Paul Kingsley on guitar(later on bass) and covering Chuck's vocal parts. Negron bit the hand that feeds him in order to feed his massive ego and his incessant drug habit. He can kiss up to Cory after the dude is dead, but I clearly remember Chuck posting inappropriate and out-of-context insults and sour grapes at Cory when he was alive.

I've seen Three Dog Night concerts over a dozen times since the beginning, until just a few years ago. The last one was the hardest for me, because it was after Cory passed away. I definitely got tears in my eyes every time a Cory song was played. Danny was the only original in the group at the time. Michael Allsup missed that concert. It was still great. They had some wonderful replacements for Cory and Chuck, and though obviously not as good as them, the music was still great. After all, it's more about the SONGS than the people who originated them. They still brought back wonderful memories of the times of their popularity. Three Dog Night will always be my #1 favorite group, and their songs remain in my heart. Would I attend a cover group of Three Dog Night? Absolutely!!!! (If I could find one.) Cory and Danny were my favorites, so I didn't miss Chuck when he left. I didn't even want him back. What these guys did backstage, or in their private lives was none of our business. How many bands from their era were squeaky clean??? I can't think of any. Just remember, it was their MUSIC that made us their fans, and it will keep us as fans for the rest of our lives. Three Dog Night Fan Forever!!!!!!

All the elements that made them so magical so long ago. It is a little disheartening now knowing that they would never be able to deliver that magic again. But face it very few people who performed some 45-50 years ago can perform and sing the way they did when much younger. I never was impressed with Danny's voice even way back then. Chuck had it and so did Cory. Chuck had it all and like so many of the 1970 acts got hooked on all the bad elements of rock and roll. Chuck did come out on the other side and his still living and performing. He did not become a footnote like so many others. I suspect that Danny may not have had the same conservative lifestyle as Cory so it is important that he continue to tour. Cory didn't need to but he liked to tour. Sadly his life did end but their body of work continues to enrich our lives.

I was watching the 2019 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Like you I think it's so sad when they lose their voices. Then here come The Zombies. OMG! I was so blown away by their voices, the keyboard player, whose name has escaped me, were ridiculously good! They're well into their 70s! Impressive!

@@lisacooks If you mean the "young" keyboardist, that's Darian Sahanaja, who has been with Brian Wilson's band for years and has also toured with Heart and the Zombies.

The Zombies are different than many other groups. They broke up in 1967 and didn't come back together until the early 2000s. So they haven't been performing continuously for over 50 years like Three Dog Night and others. That's why they still can sing so good now.

I like the honesty of Chuck Negron but at the time they were big I used to say damn they are stealing back the British hits such as Leo Sayer’s The Show Must Go On & Greyhound’s Black and White turning the tables on The Beatles robbing songs from American groups in the Sixties. The 3 Dog Night had great taste and I’m sure Randy Newman & the late Nilsson and Laura Nyro were thankful for the exposure.

The Beatles never had a big hit with any of the American rock and roll songs they covered (covered, not robbed). Their hits were their own songs.

@@lexdunn4160 Incorrect; The Beatles version of Twist & Shout was #1 on Cash box and #2 on Billboard. It was again #23 in 1986.

Karaoke show I don't think Cory was carrying the whole load. There would be no Three Dog Night without Danny Hutton. They all do Harmony on so many different songs. He's just pissed that they wouldn't let him back in the band prior to this. Read the book I did I would have kicked him out too

DAVE D sour grapes from Chuck 40 years later. The band moved on without him and sounded even better with the Paul Kingsley covering Negron's parts far better than Chuck ever could. I'm sure Danny and Chuck didn't get along/ Chuck was an egomaniac doper who was volatile since the beginning. Cory was the real vocal talent in that band, and Danny made sure that the band was lucrative and marketable. Chuck bad-mouths the band at every turn, when he never would have seen the light of day without them.
