Bell X-1 was the first aircraft to break the sound barrier in level flight. It was a rocket-powered research aircraft developed by the US National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) and built by Bell Aircraft Corporation. The X-1 made its first supersonic flight on October 14, 1947, piloted by Chuck Yeager. This event marked a significant milestone in the history of aviation and helped lay the groundwork for future supersonic aircraft designs. The Bell X-1 program was part of a larger effort to explore the technical and physiological aspects of high-speed flight, and it helped pave the way for the development of advanced military aircraft, such as the X-15 and the Space Shuttle.

Bought my Son a copy of Yeager's autobiography for xmas. Sadly had to buy used to get one bigger than a typical paperback. This video will add to a great father/son time in my life. Thank you for posting this!

I love used books I think that they’re wonderful. To think that the books I own have brought joy and education before me warms my heart.

Thank you for this excellent historic footage! All the details to take in of this great period in our country! I especially loved the scene showing the instrumentation in the X-1.

wonderful to see all of the details of this footage. So many other videos just show a few brief clips.

This is a British design with a Bell badge in it. Proud Brit here.

*PERFIDIOUS ALBION* stop spreading lies and misinformation about the Bell X1 program. The British did not contribute any technical data used in the Bell X1 program. *The Miles M.52 never existed.*

Chuck Yeager had a mechanical mind. People like that often struggle with math, but he knew the plane. He could tell them what need to be done or what was wrong. Not all pilots are like that. Some have the numerical mind they can work it out on paper or a computer now. He was a kinetic pilot, not a technical pilot. That's what I picked up after reading his book.

Actually, Yeager excelled in math while in high school. I should point out that pilots have to think in terms of 3-dimensional space, which intuitively deals with acceleration and velocities on 3 axes. The only engineers who use math on a daily basis is electronic engineers. More often than not geometry and trigonometry are more important than high-level math, which is good for analysis but isn't of much use in understanding systems relationships in real time.

@@F-14_Jockey Yeager worked on planes before he started flying them, he was a mechanic. Which is why he was such a good test pilot, he could give them suggestions to improve the plane. To get through flight school you have to know the math. They are pilots not engineers in physics. You don't have to know how to fly anymore, the planes practically fly themselves. All they need to do now is know how to read the instruments. I wonder how many pilots can land a plane in the Hudson now? In his auto biography he stated that he struggled with the math. In his own words.

Apparently it was several months after the Mach one flight that information was even released to the public. It wasn’t like it made the news that day😯
