UPDATE: This "fix" is only for the Mirror Only moving into the incorrect position NOT entire assembly folding to the incorrect position. Pay no attention to the assembly in the forward position (this will not fix that problem as mentioned in the comments section.)
Simple 10-minute fix for these faulty mirrors that do not stay adjusted properly

Thank you, it work for me. The side glass mirrors are no longer auto-adjust every time I unlock the car. That was driving me nuts for 5 years.

I felt kinda bad about leaving this video up because I didn't understand exactly what the TSB was intended to fix and the original title was misleading but I'm glad it helped you! Another win for DIY youtube tutorials.

Thanks for posting this…and leaving it up!!! - LOL….Not sure why some people can be DB’s. I was dealing with the phantom issue for years - I decided to see if there was a fix…without this video I would not have known… I needed to clean the female connector with a torch tip cleaner…also the dielectric grease wouldn’t allow a strong enough connection, so I needed to clean the connectors with contact cleaner and leave them naked - not ideal, and I may need to clean the connectors periodically, but at least the mirror is working correctly now. Thanks again!

This video is helpful insofar as it shows you how to gently separate the mirror portion from baseplate rotator behind the mirror on most modern Bmws.

I thought that a dirty/ripped and greasy latex glove was the preferred method for installing dielectric grease. I'll have to look into these q-tip things haha. Thanks for the tip though. I used them to add grease to some bus bars in a tight spot and it worked perfect.

Thanks! One other things folks can try. Apparently the mirrors can get confused where they are and show the same problem (mirror goes all the way forward). I used the recalibration procedure in the video that follows to fix it. I had to do it twice, though, and the second time I held the folding switch in for quite a while after the mirrors closed. That fixed it. Certainly worth giving it a shot. @

Completely different issues. I agree with the last post by Tol. The spring/pin the locks in place needs lubricating. Not sure if it is a closed system or accessible. But there is a drill hole fix floating around. You just have to be super careful not to drill to far. Easy for mechanically inclined

Yup. Looks like the fix I did was for the mirror portion only not the folding mechanism. Thanks for educating me/youtube audience

Dielectric grease is non-conductive, using it directly on the pins actually prohibiting the connection. Its for use on say rubber boots to spark plug porcelain to seal and lubricate the surfaces. What your looking to use is NO-OX-ID conductive contact grease. Everybody gets it wrong, took me 30 years to learn the difference.

Isn't dielectric grease supposed to be used around the connector and not on the terminals themselves? I thought dielectric grease is used to insulate a connection (like on the rubber boot of a spark plug, not the terminal) and itself does not act as a conductor.

Or rubbing the pins but not how was used. It was teached this on Electrotechnic school to not use sanding paper. Sometimes the pins are coated and doing microscopic grooves makes the actual contact weaker. Real skills are gone day by day.

This video shows a completely wrong & irrelevant procedure to fix mirror-folding-wrong-way problem, as some other folks mentioned here. Here's the youtube video with correct solution to this problem: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aqumbMWpp8m7fJ8.html BMW mirror folding the wrong way (outward) is due to a mechanical spring-loaded "homing pin" staying stuck in a "down" position (perhaps due to dirt or rust or whatever.) In normally operating mirrors this pin pops-up (it's all mechanical) when the mirror reaches an internal "home" position hole. In mirrors with outward folding problem, since the pin is stuck in a down position, the motor keeps running past it because the mechanism does not see the pin popup - hence it goes all the way to outmost end of mirror travel (which is why the mirror is all the way folded out.) FIX: Pop backside of the mirror out (where the motor is), if you can pull up the assembly even a couple of millimeters, you can spray WD40 through it to unblock (lubricate) the pin - fold/unfold the mirror a few times for WD40 to get in. If you can't fix it that way, then you'll have to make a tiny hole on top of the aluminum assembly cover and spray some WD40 inside the compartment to unblock that pin.

Thanks for posting the link to the folding mirror fix and the write up. Because of this I get it now. I was convinced that the coincidence of the pin on this mirror working itself free, all on its own, was related to the procedure I did in the video. Absolutely not the case. I am going to leave the video up in case it points people in the right direction for the folding issue and to show the procedure for BMWs T.S.B. 513608

What about passenger mirror staying tilted down after reversing
@biotom.
@biotom. 5 жыл бұрын
JUST FIXED THIS DIFFERENT WAY!!!! JUST SPRAYED A LOT OF WD40 UNDER THE ROTATING PART OF THE MIRROR. Remove plastic cower, then just pull whole mirror up (or bend it to the side) so there's a thin space under the rotating mechanism between the mirror and car holder. (Buy small 100ml WD40 with thin pipe, so you can squeeze it deeper into that 1mm space what you will have when pulling mirror up or bending it to the side. Note! You can pull or bend it just slightly, just few millimeters). Spray WD40 into that space aiming to the area, where this stuck thing is located (that thing with spring, what this guy in video oiling in the end), keep removing excessive WD40 with paper towel. Rotate left right, shake a bit the whole mirror, not too much, don't damage anything, then repeat. After a while (in 5 minutes or may be 1 hour) oxidation on the lock will be gone, the mechanism will get unlocked and working again. No need to damage the mirror. Then just put plastic cower back.

@chuckd7571 5 жыл бұрын
The bimmer forums will have more informative suggestions for you but personally I would do this procedure at least once more but add in some "electrical contact cleaner" to spray out the electrical contact points. Check for corrosion, broken pins, dirt/trash, the wires leading to the mirror motor, etc. I'm sure you've done most of that but at 10-15 minutes its worth going over again, then perhaps, again. Good Luck.
