As a water purification specialist in the army at Fort Lee Virginia; the water problems in Richmond always amazed me. The amount of water purification equipment could really help purify water from the James River and pump it up to Richmond and the citizens of the Richmond prince greater area

Personally I feel like it would be a good decision to actually dig out the entire tunnel, recover the bodies, the locomotive, and flatcars. Then fill it back in with soil to prevent sinkholes from occurring as to prevent more disasters from happening.

They could sleeve/reinforce this tunnel as it's being excavated I bet fairly easily with today's tech. we have everything from metal, concrete, and acrylics its just too expensive, and no gain from doing it.

I would like to add a bit to the history of the tunnel seeing that it was in my backyard on twenty nine street and my family had a long history of working for the C&O. My grandfather was the Chief Purchasing Agent for the C&O and my father ran Fulton Yards which was at the southern end of the tunnel. My father would take in inside the tunnel at the southern end to inspect it. My father new people who where there that day. It was not the only disaster to occur on that site for the Indians defeated the British Colonists in the 1700 hundreds

It’s basically impossible to open the tunnel and retrieve the train because the tunnel has too much water invit
@LMSPetRescue
@LMSPetRescue 2 жыл бұрын
It’s far too dangerous to open. The tunnel never should’ve been built in the first place and was always structurally unstable and had constant problems. If they open it they risk another collapse, but there’s now houses and apartments etc above the tunnel so if the tunnel collapses it could kill a lot more people. Even undisturbed it occasionally has minor collapses that cause small sink holes in people’s backyards. If technology advances to where they can open it safely I would love to see what’s inside, but right now it’s not worth the risk

Fear it's too unstable to open it was long enough to free the train and remains

@@LMSPetRescue Also given the moisture content in the dirt the train is probably rusted away.

It’s appalling that they made sure to recover a white man’s body, but left behind at least 6 black men. The happy looking train mural outside the tunnel makes it even more disrespectful.
