The key point can be easily missed: We have the most important message in history but it is useless told by a person no one hears. I have spoken in many nations but we always translate my English into the local language. Marketing is translation into another’s language. I had a message about the Bible being “Rational” but rational in Russia means “Atheistic” so we changed it. I still taught that God’s word makes sense but I used different terms.

PASTORS: Stop marketing the church like some kind of hip coffee shop or hot dog stand. Only when a man (or woman) is crushed by the weight of sin through the hearing of the Word of God can they be saved and become a child of God. You are not an activities director. You are charged with preaching the Gospel!

However, a comment worth noting concerning to this video. I have seen being a Roku box owner that a lot of churches and ministries and organizations have started putting their own channels up on the net. They are starting marketing and branding their selves on the Roku internet vehicle. IP TV is the wild west of media and I would like to see that ministry that masters that. What will it be? Will it be their brand or Jesus' brand. Look really good but really spiritually empty? Hope not!

I guess this is really important if what you are doing is building churches. I wonder how important this is to the individual who just wants to impact lives with the Love of God? May seem a little simplistic, but how do we use all Cooke has to say to prompt acts of Agape that draw souls to Christ? Personally I feel like we have lost something if all we are doing is spreading one's brand.....

There's lots of things Phil says that I agree with. However, holistically, I think his approach, and the approach of Christian marketers, is flawed. Phil makes it sound like there's nothing special about the message of Jesus Christ, that it isn't itself naturally distinctive, that it needs to be communicated better. Well it does need to be communicated better, but not by marketing it better. It needs to be explained better by a community that trusts the gospel in its eternal relevance.

Marketing to unbelievers will fill your church building with goats, not sheep. Once the goats are in, you will need to entertain them sufficiently. Dear pastor.... may I suggest you repent of this business model of church "growth". It is an abomination. Instead, how about preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ.. that we are hell deserving sinners in need of salvation. That Jesus died on the cross to pay the sin debt of all who are willing to repent and believe that he is the risen Son of God.
