Hello everyone, I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who moved to Utah a few years ago from Europe. My experience here has been great, I felt mostly welcomed and except for a few exceptions most people spoke positively about my country. I must confess, however, that when I go to Church and we sing the national anthem or other patriotic hymns I struggle a bit. I have hard time also when during a Church meeting some testimonies are focused on America...and its freedoms...I have nothing against patriotism. I think it is generally a good thing. I only struggle when patriotic things are done during sacred meetings that should focus on the Savior. Please I am not looking for arguments or debates. I only want to understand better why in the US this seems a common and accepted practice while I have never seen anywhere else so far singing the national anthem during a sacrament meeting. Thank you to all those who want to give me their perspective.

That isn't done often, only during special holiday's like independence day which is the forth of July. Sorry you had a less than less than perfect experience. Just remember, the Church is perfect, the people aren't. That's why we continue to strive to be like Christ.

@@stanleyroberts4381 Thank you for your reply and compassion. I know that It Is not done often but It remains confusing to me because there are patriotic holidays in my country as well but at Church we never sing the National anthem and Is not even in the hymnbook, which I am grateful for because It would be really weird for me tò sing the National anthem during sacrament meeting.

I don’t really know as to why we have the American National Anthem in the American Hymn book, but as stated by the other person, it is only sung on the 4th of July weekend and while the people aren’t perfect (who is?), the church is. :)

@@CreativeTankEngine Thank you for your reply. "I don't know" is one of the best answers in my opinion. The anthem is only one element. I think that It might be hard for you to understand what It feels like to be from another country and hear at Church things like " this Is the best country in the world" or spiritual thought on America etc. .and while It Is true that the doctrine Is oerfect ( Sorry One letter Is not working on my phone ) the Church constantly improves and makes changes through the insoiration of His servants and actually talking about issues ( when done with good intentions of course) can helo make things better for everyone. So I guess what I am saying is that when we say " The Church is perfect and people not" which is fine to say but saying that often precludes any further dialogue on a topic.
