Art of embroidery of the Chuvash is very much akin to that of Bulgarians. Its symbols find themselves also in Middle Eastern, Chinese ornaments. Embroidery in old times (up until WW2) served not only as means of decoration but communicating - the style and symbols in the ornament would tell the reader about the origins, beliefs of the author. In older examples runic scripts were also present.
The mastery of this art was almost lost with Soviet regime. The tradition of extremely varied unique embroidery, rich with symbolisms struggled to in the age of literalness and meager practical modern fashion. Nowadays a few good hands surprise us with modern interpretations of symbolic embroidery. Truly, every piece is work of art.
