Ross runs through a few choice coyote rounds for his shotgun to see which performs best and at various ranges. BB, 4 Buck, 00 Buck.

If pattern density is even close, you definitely want to use the larger 4 buck over BB for coyotes. The much greater downrange pellet energy of 4 buck will kill coyotes a lot farther than BB's.
@codyrivenburgh7645

your defiantly correct in the fact that the larger pellet size having more mass and higher energy......but pattern density helps alot...and when shooting long distances...70 yards or so... lead bbs still drops yokes stone cold dead when u have tight pattern thru Xtra full turkey chokes

Hidden Instinct it seems I spend more time and money patterning new loads and chokes than I do actually hunting. I love it a choke/load combo comes together. Always looking for that magic pattern. Tight enough to get plenty of pellets on target and enough spread to ensure hits on a running dog.

Please do a video of your shotgun with the chokes the Hornady B.B. recommends and show the difference. Really would love to see that video. Also what is the general consensus as to the size of pattern a person would want at 30 40 and 50 yards. Is 2 ft diameter good at 30 yrds? Just curious. Thx for a great video and look forward to the Hornady video.😁

Awesome video! I’m so glad you didn’t include the heavier than lead loads since they cost so much. I do most of my calling in Arkansas and found out there was a law against shotgunning coyotes with buckshot sizes. I spent a lot of time hunting with the Winchester BB. Thankfully that law has just changed so I can use #4 buckshot. Now I’ll load the first 2 shots as Winchester BB and the rest as #4 buck

Thanks Corby! That's pretty much what I do with my shells except I just run the BB and then a 3 1/2" 00 buck as my last Hail Mary. I've only had to use it once to knock down a running coyote at 85 yards years ago but it worked so I stick with it now.

Hornady heavy Magnum coyote BB 3" I found is the best for my shotgun. I can usually roll them at 50-60 yards. A pump shotgun is the way to go. I think they hold a better pattern than a semi and it's more consistent

Excellent show brother. I've been calling foxes, coyotes and bobcat for over 4 decades and primarily just using the shotgun the past 15 or so. I've taken them with everything from #6 20 guage high brass to 00 12 buck. For me here in eastern Kentucky the #4 buck has definitely been the winner. I've never felt the need for the heavier than lead stuff because I've killed them at ridiculous ranges with #4 buck. While that's not the normal it can be done and I'd never believed some of those kills had I not done it myself. Thanks for the smooth bore love and God bless.

Thanks for the video. Some good info there. I did call Hornady to check how much of a difference that choke would make and they confirmed as you mentioned that it would have an impact because of the wad cup. Ben Smith below probably has the best idea as they said it needs to be used with an open choke and they also mentioned that it would work good with an IC choke. If you ever run this test again would love to see how the results differ between the chokes. Anyway, thanks again and you got a subscriber. Appreciate your good work.

I found that the Hornady Magnum Coyote didn't like a ported choke tube(similar wad to Federal Flight Control). I tried the Carlson's .660 Longbeard choke in my Winchester and the Carlson's .660 non-ported turkey choke and the Hornady really liked the non-ported choke. I am going to try the Winchester Varmint X BB to see how it patterns. I tried an improved, modified and full choke also.

Awesome video... Thank you for taking the time and expense to test those rounds. The Varmint X round is what drew me to this video. I've been interested in this round and this is another video showing a great pattern for that round... I can't find any locally though. One comment on the approach though.. For a fair comparison though, the Federal premium (orange box) should have been shot with an IC choke... It's really the wad design that sets that round apart. It's got a rear braking wad that slows the separation of the shot from the wad and keeps it together longer for tighter down range patterns.... A full or tighter chock mangles the wad and defeats it purpose. Any chance the next time your at the range you could try the Federal Premium with an IC choke at the 30 and 50 yards and compare to these patterns? Thanks... I've liked and subscribed!
@CallIntheCountry
@CallIntheCountry 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks I appreciate the feedback! I knew that both the federal and hornady called to perform better out of the IC or MC but I wanted to see how they would perform out of what I had been using them in over the last couple years. I think your suggestion would be a great video and I’m interested, like you, to see just how well they perform. We’ll see though, since the Winchester has done so well for me on the coyotes. I’ve dropped a few like a stone at 50 and one at 65 on the run that took two shots. Might do it for “science” but hard to mess with what’s working haha.

Nothing, Nothing, patterns tighter at fifty yards out of my 930 Tactical Mossberg than that Federal number one flight control load. With NO choke. I use Hornady B.B. thru a skeet choke and have a killing pattern at 45-50. With full it’s a terrible pattern at 35. Full choke defeats the purpose on the wad cup. Same for Federal Flite Control rounds. IC of Skeet.

@Chad Klaren That's good information. Looks like I need more time at the range with some pattern paper. So far, #4 buck with a plain plastic shot cup works well thru the Xfull (.665). I don't use them for Coyote but that 41 pellet of 4 bk Remington load shoots amazing patterns in my cylinder bore tactical Mossberg 930. Morning CIC....Great and well thought out video, thanks. I'm curious if you've killed any coyotes at the 50 yard mark with your choice of Winchester BB's. I ask because I'm curious about the penetration at that distance. For me, I would have chosen the # 4 buckshot in spite of the lower pellet count because more is only better if the "more" gives the desired penetration needed. Perhaps the BB's will, I honestly don't know, but at 50 yards I have some doubt....Thanks again for taking the time to publish this vid. Mark.

Not every choke out the lends itself equally to improving shot patterns. It's very much a tailored setup when you find a combination. One gun one choke just shows what patterns well for your setup. You want to knock a predator down and you get shots around 50 yards toss a slug downrange instead of bb rounds.

What is equally important that no one seems to talk about or think of is what does the shot that your using do on impact? You may have more shot hitting a paper box but how many are penatrating deep enough to be lethal. Myself I did mostly the same testing but shot 4 different chokes as well feeling yes it's my gun not yours but if I do get a shot I want to be as deadly as possible. I'm no expert an just one opinion with so many others. When you have a round ball pushing through verse a sharp edge also cutting much like a broad head you will have less bloodshot areas an more bleed out an deeper penetration if its slicing much like a knife or broadhead the Federal Black Cloud which myself I shot for everything now furs, upland, waterfowl. My opinion only. I have faster an more clean kills works very good I'm not a weekend warrior but hunt for a living an thought I would share what I have learned over 35 years being a guide an wasting thousands of dollars on the newest an greatest Happy holidays.

Completely agree. I’ve taken multiple coyotes now with the Winchester BB at 50 yards, stone cold with a single shot. That’s about as far as I will try unless they’re trying to get away and have anchored coyotes at 65+ in that situation.

they use to run dogs and they would walk down to well they thought the coyote was making it's loop kind-of like what a rabbit will do but on a larger scale.well any ways they would wait for it to run by and shot him with 3" bb lead loads back then. they also said #4 and #5 turkey loads worked to. the coyotes hair with larger shot like buck grabs the ball like a bullet proof vest stopping it from going on through but smaller will have no problem at all.i use 3 1-2" #1 or #2 steel with good results. I can't find lead bb or I'd use it instead.good video make some more good hunting.

It will save you some money to staple the 2x4 to the sides tht looks like cardboard and simply put the orange dot on the white side.
@CallIntheCountry
@CallIntheCountry 4 жыл бұрын
The problem with that was that the cardboard was pre bent to use the brown side and I didn’t want to weaken it by forcing it the other direction. I was also testing multiple rounds and needed a fresh white sheet for each. That’d be a good idea though just to verify your zero.

Copper plating has not much to do with pattern but more to do with better penetration
@CallIntheCountry

I think the theory behind cooper plating is that because it’s harder than lead there is less deformation of the bb which is supposed to provide a tighter pattern down range.

For what it's worth you might want to try those Hornady BBs with an IC or Mod choke. I tried them out of my Carlson's coyote choke tune and they where very poor. I get doable patterns to 50 with an IC. They have a wad that was designed for IC or Mod chokes

Hey buddy great video, those hornady Shells are garbage, try rem doubles and triples, the triples are double stacked inside and will blow your mind with that kicks choke, and if you have a shotgun that uses a beretta/ benelli Mobile style choke then it will really blow your mind. I very often kill deer out to 100 yards with a shotgun and hand loads but factories you can for sure get out to 80

You should give 00 buck another chance. Hornady 3 in 00 buck is showing terrible patterning at 35+ yards,, whereas Winchester and even cheap Black Aces (80cents per round) are landing an average of 4 of 9 pellets in a 12 inch circle at 40 yards. Even 2 pellets of 00 buck on a coyote's chest is a cleaner kill than 10 pellets of #4 buck.

4 buck 3 times the power than bb per pellet
@CallIntheCountry
@CallIntheCountry 4 жыл бұрын
Looking at average velocities of each in available ammo I think it's closer to 2.5 times the energy per pellet. When you then look at pellets on target, at 30 yards BB has 75ft-lbs while 4buck has 82 ft-lbs. Close but the 4 buck then completely takes over at 50 yards since pellet count was nearly the same.

Come on SAPPER! - if you’re pattern isn’t on center target you don’t get to just choose the grouping you want to make it all better 😢 - if you’re shooting rifle, do you just pick 3 or 5 rounds off the target out of twenty one say “this is my tightest group!”??? Placement matters. If the shot is consistently drifting left… then we can say it’s probably you… but placement matters even with a shotgun. - if the pattern isn’t consistent… I don’t want to use that shot or choke 😎

Come on SAPPER?! Dude, this was a test of the pattern density that each shotshell was capable of. After determining which shell performed the best you can then go back and adjust your sight to zero the shotgun properly... which I did.

You really have to try different chokes hear in the great communist state of New Jersey we use shotgun only for deer Iv been hunting here for 57 users different chokes make different patterns. And different shells can very from shell to shell. Even if they are the same make and shot size with buckshot it can be a nite mare finding to find the write combo you may have to shoot till your shoulder or your cash 💰 pocket can’t take it any more. Iv been shooting no. Buck for the last 5 years with good success. It’s just what my gun likes 🙏

So, making a factual statement of effectiveness off of only 1 shell fired is worthless. You need to shoot more than 1 because there might be a freak of assembly or you just did not aim quite right, or some other factor. And as for the choke, some wads are designed to hold a tighter group and using too tight of a choke ruins the effectiveness of the wad! The same gun with an improved choke could have shot so much better that it would have left every other shell looking like trash!
@CallIntheCountry
