This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on Cicero's short (and unfortunately not entirely extant) work, On Fate and specifically on his discussion of Chrysippus' Stoic views on fate, determinism, and human freedom. Chrysippus endorsed a type of compatibilism, and used several metaphors to explain it, including that of the cylinder.

If this was not scripted, then very well done. Extremely accurate yet easy to follow review of Chrysipp/stoic/ Cicero's approach to free will and determinism.

Decided to read through Euripides’ Phoenician Women to see what exactly Chrysippus was referring to here (Epictetus also references it a bunch of times in the Discourses) and you can see it: the Gods make a prediction (usually in an if-then statement, just like Cicero tells us), the situation pushes the characters in a certain direction, and then in the important moment where they get their one little wiggle in the causal nexus, they throw it away again and again and the predictions come true. A great visual when thinking through Chrysippus’ interesting idea. Ofc for a quick refresher on Chrysippus’ idea itself after reading there’s no better spot than your videos. Thanks as always professor.

Great series on Cicero, On Fate. I'm not sure if I have a choice in even writing this comment. Or you have somehow made me do it, but now I'm unsure of what made you make me do it. Thanks!

I pronounced his name the same way in a song of mine. I've never heard anyone else pronounce it this way other than you. Is this the correct pronunciation?

Why care, since nobody pronounces Greek names in their original way (except those being pretentious)?
