Cicero on Rhetoric: Ethos, Pathos, Logos (Old Western Culture)

8 жыл бұрынWesley Callihan tells the story of Cicero and Varres, and how Cicero used Rhetoric to convince his audience that Varres was wrong. We can see the three branches of good rhetoric: Ethos (appeal to authority), Pathos (appeal to emotion), Logos (appeal to reason).
This excerpt is taken from The Historians, a unit from the Old Western Culture curriculum on the great books of Western Civilization.

Just a tiny thing. Cicero appealed to the judges more on the grounds of their class, as patricians, rather than on their Roman nationality. An important piece of context to consider is that it had not been long since the dictator Sulla had given control of the courts to the patrician class, and they were worried that it might be restored to the control of the equestrian class.

Which of today’s U.S. politicians have shown ANY real wisdom? Name one who in the past 40 years has acted wisely - not simply spoken about wisdom. I’ll wait.
