I had a big time fail happen this week when dealing with aggression issues from my Geophagus sveni. Normally Geophagus sveni are relatively peaceful cichlids, but my two big males were fighting often.
I had to act fast to try to save one of my best looking and favorite fish. Was I able to save the sveni?

The important thing is that there were no fish deaths in this circumstance, so not a huge fail. Also, sometimes I call it "Fish Catching 101" 😂

Thanks for the teachable moment on recognizing and addressing cichlid aggression. You may have been frustrated but it all worked out at least for now. Fish do have personalities and that’s what makes the hobby interesting.

Yea Troy I had similar issues with unexpected aggression with a peaceful tank to a dead fish over night. My electric blue acara s killed one of my Uaru's that was approx 8 to 9 inches compared to the acaras at 3 to 4 inches. I had to rehomed 1 acara things calmed down for a short time then I had to move my other acara to another tank as it was bullying my Uaru's again. Crazy how you never know why all of a sudden things go bad

No need to be embarrassed man. I think we've all been through similar things and we learn from them. I recently had a similar situation where I caught the wrong fish, messed up the aqua scaping and had start all over again. It just happens. Ty for posting this. We do things like this because we care so much about our fish.

Well Troy you’ve just dealt with what I’ve been saying for years while keeping Sveni….and I’ve kept them for quite a few years now. When they get aggressive, it’s not pretty! Yes they are for the most part a fairly calm fish in the right environment, but when a male gets aggressive it’s pretty much an out of control cichlid that wants to terrorize its tank mates. I’ve dealt with it a few times and have had to separate the fish. I’m usually able to add the fish back in a few weeks later after a scape change….but I have multiple tanks and can do that, for those that don’t…it becomes a headache to leave the fish in there because over time the fish or other geo they are bothering usually won’t last to long….sucks but that’s the truth of it all….Geos just like any other cichlid have the potential to be aggressive. I keep them in fairly high numbers and mix them with larger fish like my Deamons who are just about the same size and also get angry every once in a while….i guess this is part of keeping big South American Cichlids! Glad it worked out my man 🙏🏻

I have a piece plexiglass the same width and height of my aquarium. It helps to segregate part of the aquarium to make catching the fish easier. I corral them into a corner, push the plexiglass glass into the substrate and now I only have small area to chase them around in, hope that helps.

you can just add a few more adults to re-establish the hierarchy and diffuse the potential aggression. separating them will not fundamentally solve the problem. when they are reunited, the same issue is likely to arise again. now one is living alone and the other group is smaller, be careful because you may be walking a very fine line here. i have had a G. altifrons male kill a female overnight when the trio had been together for a few years and no one showed significant aggression during this time. expanding the group to six or eight is probably a better and long-term solution

Best way to move big fish is when there sleeping. After the lights go out on their normal schedule come back in 2 hours. Just use a flash light and you can scoop them up easy

We’ve all been there and destroyed our aquascapes catching fish. What I’ve found that works well, is to use two nets. Use one to nudge the fish to the other net.

Interesting gorgeous and sad. I had six Geophagus Altifrons bought at one inch. For three years everything was great. They grow up to be gorgeous adults absolutely stunning. That's what all the chasing and murdering started. I pulled out the biggest maie and even bigger female. I separated them by egg crate in a 90 gallon tank. He drove through the egg crate then tried to kill her several times. That's when they went back to pet shop. Very sad very beautiful.

Troy, We can be excellent fish keepers and do what we can and think this may work for that but there is one thing we can’t control and that is the fish personalities. Even small fish can get aggressive and cichlids you never know maybe it was breeding season and the male was the dominant fish and since you removed the female now there is no one to fight over lol. What a stunning fish though. I do hope it all works out. I hate trying to catch fish with decoration and plants. Uggh it is so annoying lol. 😂

Expanding the group could definitely work as mentioned by someone else. Just finding the right size group could be tricky. Removing the females could also work as they have less reasons for aggression. Finally taking out the aggressor for a few weeks can allow the others to grow a bit. Then once the aggressors return, the rest can hold their own. Or as you have said in the past. Re scape the tank, might take a few attempts to get them to all settle

Setting up a 75 gallon now with Sveni, electric blue acaras and a severum. What is a safe amount of Sveni in this setup?
@edwingosens8798
@edwingosens8798 6 ай бұрын
Maybe a stupid question, but why dont you swap the 2 groups Geos? Put the Sveni in the 180 and the Pyrocephalus in the 150. I think the Sveni would enjoy the bigger tank and would pay less attention to eachother with the bigger tankmates. And the other way around I think the pyros would do better with Angels and EBA.
@CichlidBros
@CichlidBros 6 ай бұрын
Originally it was to protect the sveni from aggression from anyone bigger. But now, if i could catch them all without destroying the scapes, I'd probably make that swap
@edwingosens8798
@edwingosens8798 6 ай бұрын
@@CichlidBros Yeah I feel you. The process of catching that Sveni looked painful. And you sounded really upset about the scape breaking down. But I think it will be the best for the fish in the long run. My experience is that a situation with cichlid agression or stress cant be solved by temperarely changing something, just to change it back later. It might be fine for a couple days, or even weeks, but eventually the outcome will be the same. I don’t have the luxury of having multiple cichlid tanks and put different fish in different aquariums, and I have had a few of my fish looking exactly like that Sveni. Sitting at the bottom and breathing heavily. I could put them in quarantine to destress them, but it would only last a few days before they would sit at the bottom again. This cost some of my favorite fish. If I was in your position I would try to swap them. Maybe your scape will get a little damage, but you can always rebuild a scape, you cant revive a dead fish… Of course its up to you.

Why don't you use two nets to catch the fish? It's way easier. Anyway, they don't fight anymore because they have nothing to fight over after you removed the female.
