Yes apparently gay love stories have to end in tragedy, someone has Aids or cheated and left alone while the credits roll. It sucks. That's why one of my favorite movies is Shelter. It has a happy ending..we definitely need to see better representation of happy ending gay movies.

I only saw this video clip, not the movie. From the comments, I don't think I will bother to watch the movie, too painful. I had my own gay love tragedy in college from 1969-72. This was a time in midwest America when anything gay was totally taboo and even risky. Jim and I met through mutual friends the first month of our third year of college in my rooming house one block from campus. My new roommates were old friends of Jim's. The day I was introduced to Jim, he about took my breath away. We were immediately attracted to each other but I was too shy and naive to act on my desires. I really wasn't sure Jim was gay. He was too masculine or manly or so I thought. Jim was tall 6'3" lean, muscular, fair and athletic. I was shorter at 5'10" with dark hair and into the arts. We had an unmistakeble attraction to each other. Our eyes would see each other from a distance on campus and be drawn together in a conversation we hardly had time for between classes. Jim came over more and more to our rooming house. I soon figured out he wasn't just there to see his old friends. I often wondered what he saw in me. He looked, sounded and acted too good to be true. What started out as just friends, soon turned into close friends, then that magical something began to happen, the likes of which neither of us had ever experienced before. Our relationship was sealed/ consummated on a college weekend. Jim had asked me to go home with him to meet his family. That first night we slept together in Jim's room. I think he planned that. It didn't take long before the shorts came off. There we were like two blades of grass twisting and turning, how beautiful it was. I was clueless when it came to sex but Jim was so calm, caring and gentle but passionate. He knew what to do, how to do it and when to do it. We took love and life to a new level for 3 amazing years. We ran around our college town having the time of our lives. We had to live under the radar. We never talked about being gay. We just LIVED it. None of our closest friends really knew what was going on between us. We took every opportunity to be alone, a ski trip to the Colorado Rockies, a train trip to Kansas City or visit our families. The train rides, how lovely to lay my head on Jim's broad shoulders and hold his muscular arm. I well remember driving down the highway together in my 63 Ford Galaxy 500. I let Jim do the driving. He would have one hand on the steering wheel and the other hand all over me or under my clothes. We never argued or said an unkind word to each other. We were completely compatible, honoring and respecting each other. I loved Jim's sports and Jim loved my music. Graduation day finally arrived and our lives together came to a crashing end. A gay relationship in those days was not sustainable with too much cultural resistance and hostility. It was a cruel world and a struggle to exist for two ppl hopelessly in love. What should have been a happy graduation day was anything but that. We had to be composed and stoic around family and friends. When reality set in I cried uncontrollably. Jim went into the Air Force and was assigned overseas. I lived in a dark hole either crying myself to sleep every night or not sleeping at all. We wrote long letters to each other which I finally threw away. I had no one I could turn to for support, no cell phones, no internet and no social media. I had night dreams for years that were so real, usually a continuation of our relationship. I would wake up thinking Jim was back, only to realize he was NEVER coming back. I went into the Army, pursued advanced degrees. We both eventually married. Jim married a girl we both knew from college. We have only seen each other twice in 49 years. Without fail, we always send a Christmas card and note to each other every year. We both have married, have children and now grandchildren. In 2019, I received an unexpected phone call from Jim. I was unable to take the call at the time and his message is still in my phone. We have now met three times since 2021 with our wives present. Our love has been for life. Meeting together now is surreal. We still have much commonality, enjoy each other and share stories and pictures from the past. I can never, ever forget what we had. I could write a book. And yes, I still long for Jim. What we had was stolen from us. These movies do happen in real life. Our story is still being written at ages 74 and 75. I saw my PCP today and he said you look like you are in your early 50s and healthy as a 30 yr old. Nothing much changes in life😢. When I see the chemistry between these two actors, I see Jim and I. We were on top of the world, having the time of our lives...our only desire was to please the other. We were one...body, soul and spirit. Love is eternal....I desperately wanted a happy ending...I've longed for it all my life.... P.S. I managed to watch the entire movie, not an easy thing....gay movies more frequently than not, have sad endings...

A relationship like Jim and I, was meant to be for life. But sadly, due to family, religious and cultural pressures, our relationship could not survive in those days. In a sense, Jim and I have come full circle. We live 8 hours from each other and yearly, for the last 3 years have gotten together with our wives. Very surreal. I feel like I am healed and whole and live a good life. But I still always have Jim in my heart. I like to think, he is not far away, though never close enough....❤

Beautiful video! The problem with this movie was I never understood the underlying reasons for why neither of them would leave their respective partners. Warren's was explained a little in like 1 sentence in 1 scene, but it was never expanded on. Were they both just too comfortable to it was worth risking hurting their partners? Idk I just felt like they needed some compelling reason for why they were both too scared to break up with their partners, why they insisted on clinging onto the old relationships when they were clearly in love and no longer in love with their partners...weird.
@attyjade
@attyjade Жыл бұрын
Exactly! Especially when everything was out, why was Warren still delusional in thinking that Mark would still want to be with him and still have his partner. John knew Warren at his lowest and still wanted him, so that was like a safe space for him. Why didn't Mark want to leave his partner? Money? He obviously grew up with it, so he shouldn't be blinded by it. Why stay? I believe he didn't want to be not in a relationship, bad or good. Ultimately, Mark matured, Warren remained a mess.

Well said. I mean, it was pretty dang obvious how much they cared about each other. What started as a fling grew into something as real as it gets and it really didn't make much sense at all of why they didn't just walk away from their partners for each other. I know some people say a relationship starting off based off of lies/cheating could never work, but from the way these 2 were portrayed, they made such a beautiful and loving couple.

I really enjoyed this movie and believe that the ending, although a bit sad, was necessary. Mark was alone and lonely in his relationship with Richard. I don’t think he ever wanted an “open” relationship, but did it to appease Rich. Mark wanted a true partner, so when Warren came into his life that’s what he offered. Although it was secretive, Mark was willing to accept it because it was more than what he was getting from Richard. Then, like so many of us, he found himself needing Warren. He was excited and renewed by their connection, something he no longer felt with Rich. As for Warren, I think he was caught up in the thrill of having an elicit affair. And let’s face it, Mark is easy on the eyes.😊 However possessive, protective and jealous he felt over Mark he wasn’t willing to risk his relationship with John. When all was revealed, Mark was physically attacked, loss friends and loss his home. Yet, Mark was unwilling to take any responsibility and still stayed with John. This was the catalyst to force Mark to mature and be on his own, which all though it was heartbreaking it was necessary. In the end Warren realizes the depth of feelings and love he has for this man, but it’s too late. 😢 Mark acknowledges that he still loves him, but he’s gotten “back on track” and can’t engage in their relationship anymore. He wishes him well, and goes on to live his best life. Maybe in a few years after Warren gets his shit together they can try again.😂🤔

Couldn’t have said it better myself 😂 Agreed, although there’s no doubt that they both fell in love with each other and their feelings for one another were genuine, the ending was realistic and necessary because as you say, Mark didn’t have the relationship and love with Richard as he felt from being with Warren, as for Warren you’re right he didn’t want to risk his relationship with John but the only reason he was with him is because John helped him get through his struggles when he was injured and helped him find his way back to playing again. I don’t think he really cared much for John but stayed with him because he felt he owed him something. I agree that Mark choosing to move forward on his own was the right choice for him after what he’d been through and everything fell apart around him. Personally, I believe that despite everything and the ending that Mark and Warren won’t love or be with anyone like they did and were with each other, but yeah maybe in the span of a couple of years and if Warren figures things out, he and Mark might find their way back to each other and be together again. Warren was actually willing to leave John for Mark and be with him properly instead of being secretive and in an affair. Mark was right to say no for both their sakes of course.

When these two men are on screen together it's almost electric. But it's Warren's wrenching sob of grief when he realizes the magnitude of his loss that pierces my heart every time. Too many gay films depict the end of bigotry against men's love for one another as being the end of their pain, but in many ways, it's only the beginning. The film's denouement in broken hearts and shattered lives "Cuts me like barbed Wire" like no movie before it ever has.

SPOLLER ALERT: To all those whining about "gay movies always having sad endings", let me tell you that it only seems so about this movie because of the selective scenes here. This is actually a brilliant movie, and like any straight story where the ending is "sad" for valid reasons. You can't have people in steady relationships cheating on their partners ending up "la dee dah" happy - be it a gay or straight relationship. Like Mark's mother says to him "I understand not only the collateral damage an affair causes, but how a relationship born from deception only continues to create more”. So stop whining about the "sad" ending and enjoy the movie for its excellent script, excellent acting, excellent editing and all the other things that go to make a movie as good as this one is. I would love a sequel. And I would love to see the character who plays Henry get a bigger role. He's a good actor and gorgeous to boot.

I agree. I watched the film recently. Personally, I felt that the ending was realistic and bittersweet, and I will admit I was sad that they didn’t end up together, but like I said it was realistic, and it was Mark’s conversation with his mother at Christmas like you say where she tells him the destructive consequences of an affair and how a relationship born out of deception only continues to create more - I would argue that that’s the reason why Mark rejected Warren in the end. As well as that, Mark’s mother also told him about all the affairs his father had with women throughout their marriage after he was born, his father even encouraged him with his affair with Mark that “Life comes at you fast. It can be rad to find the joy in it so you have to grab it when you can.” and that “If you’re always worried about hurting someone, you’re going to miss out on what life has to offer.” All of that from his parents influenced the ending I would say. In the end, despite the affair, the lies and deception, it was clear that Mark and Warren still loved each other despite how wrong they’d been to be unfaithful to their boyfriends - though I’d say that there were issues between Mark and his boyfriend, Richard which is why he kept the affair with Warren going and in some way fell for him but at the end of the day, it doesn’t make it right. If you’re having issues in your relationship, you either be honest with one another, talk through and try to work them out and if you can’t then the best thing is to break up, not cheat and have an affair. Mark’s mother said she somehow found a way to live with his father’s infidelity, obviously Mark didn’t want to live with that from himself. There weren’t really any problems between Warren and John except for the one Warren mentioned that he didn’t get on with John’s family, but it was clear in the end that although he stayed with him, he won’t love him or anyone like he loves Mark. I would though love a sequel and yes it’d be great to see them do more with both Henry and Pinky’s characters.

Both characters are in miserable relationships. One relationship doesn't even survive the film--and the other is doomed. It's one thing to fool around; it's another to fall madly in love with someone else when you're supposedly in a relationship. It's not that we're all longing for a Hallmark ending where everyone sails off happily into the sunset. But in this film you have two people, both in unfulfilling vapid relationships. They both need to leave their partners and at least give their own relationship a try. If it were nothing but a quick escapade between them, it would be one thing--but by the time they're in Geneva together, it's obvious they're actually in love with each other. Despite anything the mother says, she's still with Mark's father; they're still together, despite his dalliances. Mark can't use his parents' relationship as a barometer against his with Warren. Instead, he might want to use it as yet another reason to leave his current partner, the mannequin. There's nothing between them. That's not fidelity. It's foolishness. On these fronts, I think the film is dissatisfying. Maybe it needed to end with the two characters unclear about what would happen but willing finally to give it a go. Once Warren tells Mark he will leave his lover for him, what's the point of rejecting him? And that final smile from someone else really didn't work at the end. I really enjoyed so much about this film, especially that chemistry between the two leads, but ultimately I felt as if the characters weren't served by the script.

It is always the same story. It starts well but ends tragically. I guess gay couples can't live a happy life? Do they all cheat and fuck around? A gay movie with a happy ending would be a nice change.

I love this film so much. 😭 I haven’t stopped talking about it on IG for four weeks straight now. It was so good. The rawness of the film, cinematography, the acting (OHMYGOD), and the soundtrack. Definitely the best film of 2022 for me. 🤧🤍 Also, great edit!
