The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

"You're My World" was British singing star Cilla Black's biggest hit overall, and in my opinion, by far her best. A beautiful powerful moving song which she sang very well. It was later recorded by many others, becoming a hit again in 1977 by Helen Reddy. Cilla's original version charted at number 1 on the UK Singles chart, and in the U.S., number 4 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and number 26 on the Hot 100. The lovely song was written by Umberto Bindi , Gino Paoli and Carl Sigman. With this post, I believe all of Cilla's performances on the Sullivan show will have been posted. Thank you for this post, Sullivan channel!

Few interesting facts about this italian song. It was written by Umberto Bindi in 1963, he's probably been one of the first singer/songwriters around the world to be openly gay and he paid a heavy price for it. His problems started in 1961 at the Sanremo Festival when journalists started gossiping about the ring he wore instead of focusing on his beautiful song. What they wanted was the name of his boyfriend the one that inspired "you're my world (Il mio mondo)" and "Il nostro concerto (our concerto)". While his career was going great (several singers were singing his songs internationally, among them Tom Jones, Robert Plant, Carmen McRae, Shirley Bassey, Dionne Warwick and Dusty Springfield), his career in italy was poisoned by the censorship of the governement that no longer allowed him to promote his music on tv. Those dreadful people thought that he was way too popular for being homosexual and that he was not a good example in a then bigoted and catholic Italy. By the early 70es he was facing a slow and continous decline that lead him to serious economic problems and poverty. Few years before dying he could not help but accept few dimes for the sale the rights of his songs that were actually worth millions because the italias IRS was after him. Money that did not prevent him from dying poor. Those last days a famous tv host and some journalists were influencing politicians to offer Umberto a financial support due to his artistic achievements. Sadly he died one month after receiving the first pension on may 23, 2002. He was 70.

It's only in the past year or two that I've even learned of Cilla Black though I was born in the early 1960's. Odd that she's almost unknown here in the U.S. even after having appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and on at least one other American show that I know of. Probably just coincidence but in Cilla Black I see a resemblance to Colleen Moore the silent-film star who also appeared in a few sound motion pictures.
