Thank you for making this video! It brings back wonderful memories for me. Being born and raised in Cincinnati, I loved the trolley buses and was VERY SAD when they were being removed from the routes. The trolley buses in the west end of the city disappeared first. I remember as a little kid seeing the overhead "dual" trolley wires become "one single wire" all along Harrison Av. as the Cincinnati Transit Co. was in the process of removing the wires. When I was 10 years old, the days of the Cincinnati Transit trolley bus were numbered and I would drag my grandmother over to Clifton where they were still running and we would ride as many trolley buses as we could. The "61" Clifton, Ludlow, Pullan was one that we rode that stopped in front of Hughes High School in Clifton and we also rode the 78 Lockland-Reading and the 69 Madisonville trolley buses. I did all this at age ten because I knew that I probably would never get another chance. The panoramic scene in your video at 1:02 of the trolley bus "graveyard" was just north of Hopple St. and my mom and I would pass by it often in the car. Seeing all those trolley buses in that field was very sad. I must tell you that the photo at 2:38 in your video that shows the rear of a trolley bus is BEYOND PRICELESS as it is probably the only photo in existence that shows the "small rectangular window" with the multiple vent slats above that rear window that were on the older Cincinnati Transit Co. trolley buses prior to the "newer" trolley buses with the conventional rear windows that I rode from 1960 to 1964. I specifically remember when I was very little, my parents driving a few cars behind one of these "older style" trolley buses with the small rectangular rear window when we were on a downtown street. It was the only time that I recall seeing one these "older" trolley buses in service as they were being replaced at that time (circa 1955). The photo in your video of that rear window is unique! The reason for that small rectangular rear window was that it could be opened and swung down, allowing the operator to manually maneuver the trolley poles to be reattached to the overhead wires if need be. If you look at the view at 0:26 in your video of the rear windows of the "newer" trolley buses (circa 1959), you will notice that the rear windows are conventional and cannot be opened. I really appreciate seeing this video! When I moved to Toronto, Ontario Canada in the 1980's, I was like a little kid again and was walking on air when I saw that the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) was still operating the old trolley buses on many routes. As an adult, I made it a point to ride those TTC trolley buses regularly until they too were completely removed from service in the early-1990's. There are videos of the TTC trolley buses WITH AUDIO SOUND here on KZfaq. Thanks again for making this Cincinnati Transit Co. trolley bus video. Sorry so Lengthy!

Hi johnwoa, Thanks for your comprehensive comment (no apologies needed). I am glad you enjoyed the presentation and took the time to write. Unfortunately I only had limited time in Cincinnati, with not such great photographic equipment, but was happy that I had some scenes that cannot be repeated to put something on KZfaq. I also have some TTC material, but it will be several weeks before I can put something together for publication. tassiebaz

+tassiebaz Thank you for your reply! I hope you don't mind me writing back so soon but I am extremely impressed with the quality and detail of this video. One quirk about me is that, when I was a young child growing up in Cincinnati, I was very big on in-depth detail on many things, including the Cincinnati Transit Co. trolley buses. I was wondering how long you lived in Cincinnati and I was wondering how you came about to possess such wonderful film footage and photos of the Cincinnati Transit trolley buses. Many of your scenes in your video depict route 61 out in Clifton, a route that I was quite familiar with as a child. Route 53 Auburn-Clifton is one that I do not remember--- maybe it was before my time. That photo at 2:38 that I mentioned in my previous comment shows the bus number (1231) which is "icing on the cake" for this priceless photo because if archival records still exist with Cincinnati Metro (f/k/a Cincinnati Transit Co.) or with dedicated Cincinnati transit enthusiasts, the origins of this particular trolley bus with the old-style small rectangular rear window could be traced and it could be determined exactly when this trolley bus was placed into service and how long it served the City of Cincinnati. Again, when I saw the video footage crossing the Hopple St. Viaduct looking down on the field filled with parked trolley buses it almost brought tears to my eyes because I personally witnessed this scene many times as a youngster crossing the Hopple St. Viaduct with my mom in the car. Finally, for hardcore transit buffs, there is one aspect of the interior of the Cincinnati Transit trolley buses that must be pointed out. All Cincinnati Transit Co. trolley and diesel buses back in the old days had the Grant Electrolock fare box next to the driver. The Grant Electrolock was the most interesting transit fare box I have ever seen in my life and I remember the "gongs" and the "buzz" sounds that it made when you dropped coins in the top slot. I also remember the "crunching" sounds the fare box would make when the driver would activate the mechanism that sorted the coinage and tokens. If you look carefully at 2:33 in your video, you can see the top portion of the Grant Electrolock fare box next to the driver on the trolley bus. I'll bet some of these vintage Grant Electolocks are in the hands of collectors and are still in full working order. I would love to see a video of that fare box here on KZfaq! Probably would be VERY RARE. In closing, I am attaching (see below) the vintage Cincinnati Transit logo showing both the GM diesel bus (left) and trolley bus (right) which was on the side of all Cincinnati Transit buses (circa 1950's to early-1960's). I will be happy to try and answer any questions you may have!c2.staticflickr.com/6/5107/5601638227_53bfae944d_b.jpg

Hi johnwoa, Thanks again for your comprehensive comment. To answer your question, I never lived in Cincinnati. An enthusiast friend and I took a trip in April, 1965 and stopped in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Dayton. We were young and on a tight budget. We only spent one day in Cincinnati and it rained part of that day, so my coverage was very limited and I was lucky to get the shots I did get. It's a long time ago, but I think some of the Route 53 trips were run by diesels. We did meet a driver on Route 53 trolleybus and took a ride with him later that day, hence the night shot. Soon after our visit, both Columbus and Cincinnati trolleybuses were gone. Thanks for the logo. If I had it when I produced the video, I could have included it. tassiebaz

+tassiebaz I found this really great vintage color photo of a Cincinnati Transit Co. trolley bus from one of the routes in the "western" part of Cincinnati (Route 21 - Westwood/Cheviot). See photo Attachment below. When you visited Cincy in 1965, all of the trolley bus routes in the western part of town had been switched over to the GM diesel buses and the only trolley bus routes that remained were the ones you filmed and photographed in Clifton, Lockland, Reading, Madisonville, Auburn and vicinity. My mom (who regularly rode the Cincinnati Transit PCC streetcars in Price Hill in the 1940's) tells me that my grandparents took me for rides on the Westwood/Cheviot trolley buses when I was a little child, but I was too young to remember it. All I remember about those trolley bus routes in the western part of Cincinnati were the dual overhead wires all along Harrison Avenue that were in the process of being dismantled when I was very young (late-1962 to be specific). Here's a little bit of Cincinnati Transit Co. trivia---- Prior to 1964, all of the buses had Husman's Potato Chip signs on the front of the buses. The Schoenling Beer signs on the front of the trolley buses seen in your video appeared around 1964 or so. The photo of the Rte. 21 - Westwood/Cheviot trolley bus is attached below.s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/22/e4/78/22e478b684b1b15bb143abea08bf4c33--bus-ride-cincinnati.jpg

Regarding my previous comment, I have solved the "mystery" of the scrapyard trolley bus (1231) that is shown at 2:38 into the video by researching archives. All the other Cincinnati Transit Co. trolley buses in your video are Marmon-Herrington trolley buses, but 1231 is different. If any transit bus enthusiasts, especially from the Cincinnati area, are curious or interested in the origins of trolley bus No. 1231, leave a reply and I will give details as to who built it, what year it was built and describe a few external body differences in appearance from the Cincinnati Transit Co. Marmon-Herrington trolley buses.

Hi Jack, Thanks for watching and for your comment. I'm glad you liked the video and appreciate you taking the time to let me know. Unfortunately, when I was in Cincinnati, there weren't too many trolleybuses still running, but I was happy to be able to ride a few and get some pictures. All the best for 2023. Cheers, tassiebaz.😄

I can't for the life of me remember what Route 32 was if it was a trolley bus. What route was that? My earliest recollection of riding Cincinnati Transit Co. trolley buses was Route 21 - WESTWOOD, CHEVIOT in the 1950's. I also rode the various trolley bus routes over in the Clifton, Lockland, Reading and Madisonville areas with my grandparents before the trolley buses disappeared from Cincinnati streets. --- John

@@johnwoa Route 32 was Downtown to Price Hill, to Westwood mall. Bare in mind I'm referring to the 1970's time frame. I have no idea of current day route and or schedules

@@jackwalsh1468 Thanks for your reply! I have drawn a complete blank regarding what you said about Route 32. We moved away from Cincy in the mid-1960's and I do not remember a "Westwood Mall". Would that be the Western Hills Plaza on Glenway, and how did Route 32 relate to Price Hill if it went into Westwood? I am interested in this Cincinnati transit history. Sorry for my confusion. --- John
