Our final walk in Cincinnati before we head home. The Over The Rhine Area still has an edge to it in places but it been reinvigorated by public and private investments. The old German buildings have been rehabbed in much of it and new coffee shops, bars, and restaurants have moved in. The new Soccer Stadium is on the western edge and the parks have seen some investment as well. I'm not sure if this has raised gentrification issues where the poorest get pushed out and left out of growth and opportunities but hopefully the long time residents have benefitted from the efforts and energy put into it.
Let's go explore the old neighborhood that was known for poverty, crime, and deterioration just a generation ago.
Correction: Graeters is NOT owned by Krogers but is distributed by them in some of their stores. It is still owned and operated by the 4th generation of the Graeters Family. My apologies: www.graeters.com/

Nice. Thanks for the comment. It's good to hear from a local. Any suggestions on things I could have shown but didn't, or could have said but didn't? Thanks. -H

In the 1960s as a child of 9, 10, I used to live at 1913 Race Street, several blocks north of Findlay Market, before we moved up to Clifton. That old tenement building has long since been demolished, replaced with a parking lot, I think. The few times I've returned to Cincy to visit relatives, I always amaze myself at how little I remember from my old home town; so many changes happening all the time. Thanks for making this walking tour video of the near-downtown area; nice to see the place is still in good shape, with many improvements over the years.

Hi Henry. Looks like they have done a good job with regeneration. Interesting to get someone who used to live there take on the city. A lot of our cities in the UK have lost their character. All seen like they have been regenerated using the same blue print or maybe as I get older I look at the 80's and early 90's through rose tinted glasses.

Hi there. I think there is an economic incentive towards chains and cookie-cutter type development. We see that in many places in the US. It’s a shame but I agree we also carry our own preferences along with us which colors our perspectives. Thanks so much for the thought provoking comment. Cheers. -H

If it makes you feel better, TQL Stadium is 100% privately funded. They are also planning a privately funded entertainment district with a music venue bars etc. (like a small version of LA Live in Los Angeles). Great video!

I live in the greater cincy are and I finally decided to take a walk around OTR a few years ago. I never would have done that 20 years ago. I saw a young hipster looking dude walking a dog and decided to go where he went. The architecture and vibe was really nice. Yeah gentrification is a controversial issue yet it does do some good .
@CityWalks
@CityWalks 3 ай бұрын
Oh absolutely it does some good. I think the main issue is when the benefits don’t accrue to the locals who can get pushed out if it isn’t done correctly. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Glad you got to check it out. -H

Great job on the video! In the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s, German breweries were very prevalent in the OTR area, especially on Vine Street. I have a residence at 1200 Vine Street area. Our building is fire sprinklered and has an elevator. Also, assigned a parking spot. Public Parking is pretty much available. Great American Ball Park (Reds) and Paycour (Bengals) stadiums less than 1 mile south of the Over the Rhine area. I love it here! 😂

Great video, It is very similar to cities in Europe, this could easily be France or Spain. The architectural style is very recognizable. What a beautiful city by the way!

Many thanks and yes, I agree about the resemblance. Of course as you go out from the city center the more it goes back to typical American suburbia. Some of those are beautiful too but not very European. Thanks for the comment. -H

Hello Henry. Thanks for showing me a city I don't know a lot about. Did you feel as nostalgic abput Cincinnati as you did when you visited Wilmington? Hope you enjoyed the FC Cincinnati game. I went to a couple of MLS games when I lived in Massachusetts, and found them enjoyable. Hope all is well in Livingston. Leaves are turning here in Vermont . Take care.

Hi Tom, great to hear from you. Colors are changing here as well and we are getting some cool weather. I’m trying to do some weatherization to the house before the real cold comes. I did not feel as Nostalgic for Cincinnati as I did for Wilmington. Even though I have family in Cincinnati. I only spent a few years there. Still, it’s a great city, and it was fun to go back and show my son. The game was absolutely fantastic, one of the loudest events I’ve been to. Thanks so much and stay warm. - H.

Hi Tom, I got an email that you'd replied but I don't see it on here. Might be a filter issue. Anyway, I'd love to get that article you mentioned sending via Patrion. I know trees cool with shade as well as transpiration. I have started to wonder what the effect of covering all these massive parking lots with solar panels will be. Blocking the sun from those massive heat sinks must have some sort of effect. I'm sure the panels absorb some of the heat but it can't be as much as asphalt and they probably don't hold onto it as long. Thanks and all the best.

Graeter's is not owned by Kroger, but Kroger distributes Graeter's in their stores. The hill that is "not Mt. Adams" is Mt. Auburn. TQL was privately built by FC Cincinnati's ownership, but the city paid for some utility relocations etc. There was some neighborhood upset about the gentrification pushing out long-time residents, but that has died down. The same objections were raised by residents and businesses which were bought out to build TQL. Xavier is a Catholic (Jesuit) school. Mt. St. Joseph U. in Delhi is also Catholic. Bremen St. was the original name, but it was changed to Republic during WWI to hide the German name and many other streets were also renamed at that time.

Great walk around OTR. Would recommend hitting Findlay Market area too. There's a couple of rough blocks on the way, but not too bad. Going east to west the streets can be remembered by "Big strong men will very rarely eat pork chops" Broadway, Sycamore, Main, Walnut, Vine, Race, Elm, Plum, and Central. Also, Republic St. used to be called Bremen, but changed during WWI (so other sign was historical). The sign for "Xavier" was not for Xavier University (several miles away), but is in regards to a Catholic Church called St. Xavier a couple of blocks from that spot.

Thank you so much for this. I had my first ever dinner date in OTR in high school and would go to all the concerts I could at music hall. You walked right by where I had my prom pictures in the park. I’m sure I’ll share in your experiences in the next decade as I’m even more removed from Cincinnati.

I remember looking over at OTR from I75 and thinking that must be a miserable place. Nice to know the area is being gentrified (although many don't want that, I'm sure). The OTR is becoming a truly preserved, beautiful neighborhood. A gentrified OTR could be the envy of many cities.
