I'm curious as to why the hippo's sleep indoors.? The area is so serile with all that stainless steel and buzzers blasting. Surely they would be happier sleeping outdoors where they can access the pool. ?

The behind the scenes stuff for zoos is always so interesting to me. It's not like they just stick the animal in a pen and leave it there, they're always training them and giving them new kinds of stimulation and challenge, while also making it easier and safer to work with them.

@katiekat4457
@katiekat4457 3 жыл бұрын
It's not really necessary and it's excessive or basically overkill to train your cat or dog to take meds. For cats you just shoot the pills in, close their mouths and rub their necks and the pills go right down. As for dogs, you just stick them in something like a Pill Pocket, Hot Dog, or any piece of food and down the pills go. If they do spit them back out you just pick them up off the floor and try a different food or just hold your dogs mouth shut til he swallows. They train the hippos because you can't go in with them and pick up pills they spit out or don't want to take and you certainly can't hold their mouths closed.

Wattz- no work? No disrespect, but tell that to wardens and other folks who spend their lives fighting poachers, the sanctuaries, the rescue workers and scientists who spend all their time trying to keep entire species from being wiped out. Not trying to start an argument, but honestly, some species only exist because of zoos. These guys are very well cared for (there are bad zoos, but this is not one if them) happy, and safe from poachers. If anyone thinks "no work is needed" for animals in their natual habitat, I recommend Last Chance To See - you can look it up online, the book is amazing and there were two BBC series which you can also find online. An UNBELIEVABLE amount of work goes into it. Natural Habitat" cannot be taken for granted.

All true public zoos are run like this. Not the tiger guys fake zoo with badly treated and underwear animals. The Chinese zoos, European zoos...Australian zoos, all the world zoos have a network set up monitoring each animals DNA and breeding so they trade animals to make sure there is no longer inbreeding. Keeping the gene pool strong for future world to see! A nuke would ruin that!

@@theog2093 All legit American zoos from the Bronx to Seattle and Tampa to San Diego. It is part of zookeeper commitment to keeping a clean gene pool, the Bronx us trying to bring back genuine American Bison. Not mixed gene, but the original Bison. Breed enough to take them out west for controlled mating or insemination there! The old primitive bars and small cages are no more in the world zoos. Even the fish and birds. From toads to 🕷 spiders and 🐟 fish. They do it all. Endangered reptiles, no matter how dangerous. Today's zoos are awesome, educational and fun! But not cheap. The costs are scarey! Damn.

I appreciate the way you have been documenting everything about Fiona’s life since birth, showing us what caring for hippos entails, how you love these animals, enrich their lives, keep the whole place so clean! You’re all so smart,how you train the hippo’s and how you have the foresight to prepare for possible situations, is all very interesting. I never really thought about hippo’s until I watched a lot of these videos, but now I love them, and I feel like I know a lot more about hippo’s than most people now, lol Thank you! 🐟 🐟 🦛 🦛 🦛 🐟 🐟

I know the wild can be cruel but I wish they could be there. Since they cant be in the wild Im glad they r loved and taken care of so they will have a chance at life.
@ratherbwithhorses
@ratherbwithhorses 5 жыл бұрын
Really, don't wish the wild on them. They are living a long , happy and healthy safe life. We sometimes thing the wild is nice, it is as hard on the animals as it is as we imagine. I don't think predator animals adapt to captivity as comfortably as prey animals seem to. Being safe is most important to prey animals. Predators need to hunt, safety be damned.

They are so adorable!! As a vet tech. I have considered applying to work at the Zoo, but I have such mixed feelings about it. I would LOVE to help take care of the animals but I'm worried that I will feel sad and a little guilty that they are in captivity. I've only ever worked with dogs and cats and the occasional small exotic, so it would be amazing to have the large animal and exotic experience!! I have a lot of respect for the medical team at the Zoos! Hippos and elephants are my favorite!
