Ruyi deserved far better than the way she was treated by everyone except the servants who were loyal to her. Better a poor man who would have loved her truly, had faith in her, and sought to make her happy than an emporer who did none of those things.

I’m think there was also a component of he wanted to turn back those years she was in the cold palace. He thought by erasing the physical time/age and wounds that everything could be as it was but it’s definitely true. Ruyi changed in the cold palace.

I agree that how the Emperor treats Ruyi is somehow unacceptable for today's values. But it is clear from the conversations that at that era, giving powder is like giving a dowry to an Empress while Ruyi is just a consort. So it's flattering for women at that time.
