In this video I show you one of the least understood, yet coolest and easy to use animation features Cinema 4D has to offer. Don't let the scary quaternion name put you off, this one could solve a lot of your animation headaches with just a single button.

This is something I didn't learn in my motion design class and this is about to save my final. While classes are strictly online you have been my favorite professor.

Oh my lord, thank you. I've spent the past 2 hours trying to figure out why my globe wouldn't spin 360 degrees on an axis and this is why, thank you.

Such an amazing explanation ... I came from here via coding my game while searching w value of quaternion in Unity3D and found this great explanation. Thank you very much :)

Hello, i was wondering if you could do a tutorial on debris like making debris explode or breaking a window, or making a wall fall into prices. All of the other tutorial suggest using the "knife tool". however, that tool is no longer in Cinema 4D R19. If you could please respond, that would mean a lot to me. Thanks!

Ill see what I can do. For now though, the knife tool has been renamed to "cut" and comes in three flavors, "Line cut" is probably what youre after. As for breaking, search youtube for voronoi fracture tutorials, they will get you started.

Sorry but this is not a good solution for 90% of animation needs as when you switch to Quaternion mode you can no longer control easing in the graph editor! That means that every interpolation will be a hard-hitting linear one. For any kind of character work (or even things like cameras etc) that's a major limitation as the animation will look clunky and mechanical. A better approach generally is to pick the best rotation order for your character to begin with to avoid gimbal issues in the first place -This video uses Maya but the principle is the same and animators now have rotation order options in Cinema too.. vimeo.com/54541692 .. or alternatively if you don't want to mess with rotation orders simply group the object ('nulls' in C4D) and just rotate one axis on each group. That's a very common solution for character rigs for any control that will have a very wide range of rotational range (FK upper arms, head etc)

Although you are correct in that you lose control in the graph editor, this doesn't mean you are limited to linear motions. If you select the keyframes and look in the attributes, there will be an option to switch between linear motion and cubic easing in and out which opens up quaternions for further uses beyond mechanical animations.

Cool, I guess that's a new option as I don't have that in R17 which was the last time I upgraded C4D. I still think there should be a caveat though that switching to Quaternions isn't going to work for most animators as most of them will want fine control over easing in my experience. The video I linked to above shows an alternative solution which requires a little more planning but is more 'animator friendly' in my opinion.
